Remembering Dave Myers: A Tribute To A Culinary Legend

The TV culinary world has lost one of its most beloved figures, Dave Myers, at the age of 66. Best known as one half of the duo, The Hairy Bikers, Myers’ died two years after announcing his diagnosis with cancer. His death is not only the loss of a great chef but also a loved television personality and family man.

A Life Well Lived

Born in Barrow-in-Furness, Myers’ early life was influenced by his mother’s cooking and his father’s love for fishing. This later turned into a deep passion for food. Despite facing the challenge of becoming a young carer, when his mother developed multiple sclerosis, Myers found a positive outlet in cooking, a skill that would later define his career and personal life.

After studying fine art at Goldsmiths in London, Myers had a somewhat unique career path that led him to become the BBC’s first male make-up artist, a role he would hold for 23 years. His work on shows ranging from Doctor Who to period dramas showcased his artistic talent beyond the kitchen. However, it was his meeting with Si King, on the set of a TV adaptation of Catherine Cookson’s ‘The Gambling Man’, that would change his life in a big way.

The Hairy Bikers’ Adventure

Myers and King’s partnership led to the creation of the Hairy Bikers. Their television journey began over 20 years ago when they hit the road on their motorbikes for adventures across the UK and around the world. From the roads of Portugal to the landscapes of Namibia, they shared their love for food and travel, becoming household names in the process.

Their series, such as The Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook, Mums Know Best, and Asian Adventure created entertaining television as well as showing the vast range of cuisine around the world.

Tributes and Memories

Earlier today, Si King posted on X:

“I’m afraid I bear some sad news. Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.

“Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home. All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.

“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow.

“I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you God’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

He also said:

“I know Dave and his family would want me to thank all of you who sent messages of support in recent times. It meant the world to him, his family and all The Hairy Bikers team. I am sending you all much love and gratitude for those simple acts of kindness, generosity and spirit. We are eternally grateful for them.

“May I ask you all for one further kindness and allow Lili, his wife, his family, close friends and I some time and some peace to process our huge loss. I am sure I will see you all soon.”

BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore said:

“Everyone at the BBC is incredibly sad to hear this news.

“Dave made cooking a truly joyful adventure and he shared that joy with millions. The public loved him and his unique partnership with Si.

“Together they made every viewer feel like a friend. More than that he was simply a lovely man. Our thoughts go out to his family and many friends.”

Led Zeppelin Manager’s Ferrari 246 Dino GTS Heads To Auction

If you ever wanted to combine rock ‘n’ roll and classic cars; you’d probably end up with this…a 1973 Ferrari 246 Dino GTS purchased from new by Peter Grant, the manager of legendary rock group Led Zeppelin – and that’s exactly what’s going up for sale through an online auction with Car & Classic this week.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Pedigree Meets Italian Craftsmanship

Peter Grant, the man who played a huge role in Led Zeppelin’s meteoric rise to fame and record-breaking success, ordered his Dino as one of only 235 right-hand drive versions brought into the UK between 1972 and 1974. Its configuration alone makes it a rare classic but, with its time living the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle added in, this is one special car.

Delivered in a striking Rosso Bordeaux colour (a non-standard, non-metallic option) paired with brown leather upholstery, this Dino was one of just 114 ordered in this colour specification.

A Meticulously Maintained Car

Over the years, the Ferrari 246 Dino GTS has been well maintained by Ferrari specialists. From rebuilt suspension and brakes to the installation of a high-torque starter motor, no expense has been spared in preserving this dream classic. Now MOT-exempt due to its classic status, this Dino still offers an authentic driving experience, remaining mechanically original in most respects.

More Than Just a Car

Dale Vinten, head of editorial at Car & Classic said “With many members of Led Zeppelin known to enjoy their fair share of supercars, including many Ferraris, this Dino, formerly owned by Peter Grant, is a cherished, usable example with a proven history. It’s not just a car; it’s a piece of rock history, a fantastic piece of Led Zeppelin memorabilia, and a lovely example of a collectable 246 Dino GTS – it’s something that everyone can hopefully appreciate carries significant importance.”

The Auction

Queen Elizabeth II’s Range Rover For sale

Queen Elizabeth II’s custom Land Rover Range Rover SDV8 Autobiography LWB is for sale on PistonHeads.com for the price of £224,850. The vehicle was commissioned by the Royal Household in March 2016 and was seen transporting the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to various high-profile events.

Noteworthy appearances include its role during Barack Obama’s state visit to the U.K. in the same year, where the former U.S. President and First Lady Michelle Obama were seen entering the rear of the car.

The late Queen’s Range Rover was modified by the Land Rover Workshop in Gaydon, to meet the Royal Household’s specifications. These modifications included side steps and a police siren. However, certain adjustments have been removed for homologation purposes. The set of grab handles requested by Her Majesty The Queen, along with a warning label for the police siren, are included in the sale though.

The Vehicle

This SDV8 Autobiography LWB has a metallic blue exterior with a cream leather interior. The extended wheelbase provides dignitaries in the rear with added legroom, and the rear headrest screens have been reinstated for the new owner.

Under the bonnet, a 4.4-litre, twin-turbocharged diesel V8 with 339hp and 519 lb-ft of torque powers the vehicle, delivering its capabilities through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to all four wheels. With a quick 0 to 60mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 135mph, this luxurious vehicle, listed by Bramley Motors on PistonHeads.com, comes with 18,000 miles on the odometer, including 2,586 miles driven during its Royal ownership. The sale includes the original number plates, OU16 XVH, as seen on the vehicle during Royal events.

Matt Bird, Deputy Editor of PistonHeads, said: “There are few finer ways to travel than in the back of a long-wheelbase Range Rover. They really are unmatched for opulence and sense of occasion, especially when specified like this one with lovely light leather and dark wood. Even the wheels look ideal for sumptuous rolling refinement, and the lusty V8 diesel will be the perfect accompaniment for mile after effortless mile.

This model is desirable enough already, but to know this was personal transport for the late Queen and Prince Phillip elevates this Range Rover onto another plane of specialness entirely. This would have been one of the final vehicles specified by Her Majesty; that it remains with some of those features intact is lovely to see. Knowing that this vehicle was used for the Obamas on a state visit only furthers the appeal. For those enamoured with the Royal family, it’s an unrepeatable (and wonderful) piece of history.”

Dean Sullivan Funeral

Friends and family of the beloved Brookside star, Dean Sullivan, known to many as Jimmy Corkhill have paid tribute to him at his funeral. After his passing, aged 68, following a brief illness last month, hundreds of people came together at Liverpool Parish Church to honour his memory.

The service was a touching tribute to his life in the city where he became a legend. A private cremation, attended only by his closest loved ones, followed the service.

Despite having moved away from Liverpool to New Brighton on the Wirral, Dean’s connection to the city remained strong, evident in the gathering of friends and family who came to celebrate his life. In a touching moment, Dean’s cherished dog was escorted into the church by a companion, giving the faithful pet a chance to say goodbye one last time.

Top Gear Is Cancelled

Top Gear is cancelled! At least for the ‘foreseeable future’ anyway.

The decision to pause production of one of the top money makers and most watched shows for the BBC, comes following a crash involving presenter Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, during filming last December.

Back in the days of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, Top Gear was extraordinarily successful for the BBC and became a true worldwide TV sensation. However, this current cancellation isn’t the first time Top Gear has been shelved. After Clarkson’s contract wasn’t renewed in 2015 due to an off-screen incident, the BBC went through several hosts before settling on Paddy McGuinness, Freddie Flintoff, and Chris Harris in 2019. They were in the middle of shooting the 34th series when Flintoff had his accident last year, and there haven’t been any new episodes since then.

Bridge Classic Cars Director, Craig worked on Top Gear several years ago and he has fond memories of the show. He said “Working on Top Gear was such a great experience for me. The people were friendly, the atmosphere was very positive, and it was so much fun being around fellow petrolheads during filming. It’s a bit sad to hear that Top Gear is no more but, hopefully, we will see a revival in the years to come.”

The Official BBC Statement On Top Gear

“Given the exceptional circumstances, the BBC has decided to rest the UK show for the foreseeable future. The BBC remains committed to Freddie, Chris and Paddy who have been at the heart of the show’s renaissance since 2019, and we’re excited about new projects being developed with each of them. We will have more to say in the near future on this. We know resting the show will be disappointing news for fans, but it is the right thing to do.”

“All other Top Gear activity remains unaffected by this hiatus including international formats, digital, magazines and licensing.”

Most Expensive Ferrari Ever Sold At Auction

On 13th November, during the Contemporary and Modern Art sale, hosted by RM Sotheby’s in New York, a 1962 Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO became the second highest-priced car ever sold at auction, and the most valuable Ferrari ever sold at auction with the winning bid coming in at $51.7 million (approx £42 million).

Chassis 3765 has been in a private collection for almost forty years, until this week, when a select group of bidders met behind closed doors (and on the phone) to have the chance to own this exceptional car.

This 1962 GTO Tipo was the only one raced by Scuderia Ferrari and comes with a history that most cars could only dream of. During its racing years, accomplishments included a class win and a 2nd overall finish at the 1962 Nürburgring 1000 KM. Driven by Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, it also took the runner-up spot in the 1965 Sicilian Hillclimb Championship.

Previously owned by a Ferrari Club of America chairman, it won an FCA Platinum Award, the Coppa Bella Macchina at the Cavallino Classic, secured 2nd place in the GTO class at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and earned a Best of Show Award at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, said “Celebrating this sale during Sotheby’s marquee week highlights the unparalleled stature of this Ferrari as one of the world’s most desirable objects. The result, achieved through collaboration between Ferrari, RM Sotheby’s, and Sotheby’s, echoes our mutual pursuit of perfection—mirroring the very ethos Enzo Ferrari embodied when designing this car. Fetching $51.7 million, this transaction adds a new chapter to a vehicle with an unmatched legacy. Now, it ranks among the most expensive cars sold at auction, a true testament to its singular place in history.”

2024 Mazda MX-5

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 has been unveiled to the public at the Japan Mobility Show. The unveiling marks the first time since the current generation was released in 2015, that subtle exterior design updates have been made to Mazda’s award-winning sports car. These changes include a fresh LED headlight design that now incorporates daytime running lights as well as redesigned rear LED lights. There is also a new paint colour that has been added to the MX-5 lineup in the form of Aero Grey.

Interior Of 2024 Mazda MX-5

Inside the 2024 Mazda MX-5, drivers have access to a larger 8.8-inch central touchscreen multimedia display and an updated instrument panel. The expanded central screen gives greater navigation mapping clarity, while the advanced MZ Connect system improves user functionality. To highlight how the MX-5 is moving into the future, USB-C ports have also been introduced with this new model. As in previous versions, the new MX-5 offers wireless Apple CarPlay and also features a new frameless rear-view mirror. While all these changes are great, the interior maintains the same driver-focused cabin and driving position we have come to expect from an MX-5.

Mazda MX-5 – A Benchmark For Sports Cars

Throughout its more than three decades of existence and across four generations, the Mazda MX-5 has consistently set the standard as a pure lightweight sports car that prioritises driver engagement. The philosophy of Jinba Ittai, driver and machine working in perfect harmony, is something that has always been present in every Mazda vehicle, and the new MX-5 is no exception. The 2024 Mazda MX-5 continues to deliver this philosophy and, as a result, has created another fantastic example of open-top driving with all the agility, lightweight construction, and balanced handling you could want from a sports car like this.

On The Track & On The Road

In all models of the 2024 Mazda MX-5, the new Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) track driving mode doesn’t kick in until a later parameter is hit. The result of this is a more dynamic driving experience while still keeping the driver safe and secure. This can be particularly useful for those who are taking to the track for the very first time.

The accelerator’s response has been improved to provide more precise throttle control, and the electric power steering has been adjusted. This has led to a reduction in steering rack friction and, as a result, a more natural and fluid response to driver input.

Specifications

As with previous versions of the MX-5, 2.0-litre cars fitted with a manual gearbox come with a front strut brace, limited-slip differential, and Bilstein dampers as standard. However, the 2024 MX-5 introduces a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential, featuring a cam mechanism added to the conical clutch. This mechanism is lightweight, compact, and highly durable. The cam angle is set differently for deceleration and acceleration which creates optimal limiting force of slip during both actions. This enhancement of slip limiting force during cornering when the unloaded rear wheel is lightened improves stability.

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 also introduces additional safety features across all models, including Lane-Keep Assistance and Intelligent Speed Assistance. The Traffic Sign Recognition system has been updated to improve signage recognition too.

2024 Mazda MX-5 Release

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 is set to arrive in the UK in March 2024 when it will look to continue the successful formula that has seen more than 25,000 fourth-generation MX-5s sold in the UK since its launch in 2015. The new 8-model range maintains its engine lineup, offering a choice of 1.5-litre 132ps and 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines for both the Roadster and Retractable Fastback RF models. The Prime-Line model pairs with the 1.5-litre engine, the Exclusive-Line can be ordered with both the 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, and the range-topping Homura is exclusively available with the 2.0-litre engine.

Jeremy Thomson, Mazda UK Managing Director, commented on the 2024 Mazda MX-5, saying, “When it comes to driver engagement, the current generation MX-5 has established itself as a benchmark sports car, and with the 2024 Mazda MX-5, we continue to offer one of the most exciting and satisfying to drive cars money can buy.”

“Our engineers created a sports car that incorporates our ground-breaking Skyactiv technology, modern safety and superb efficiency with the driver-focused enjoyment for which the MX-5 is loved. The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products. Mazda’s unceasing commitment to refining the vehicle over its 30-year history is highlighted again with the subtle but focused updates to the 2024 MX-5, which ensure this car continues to be an affordable, engaging, world-class sports car”.

Full pricing and specifications for the 2024 Mazda MX-5 in the UK will be announced at a later date.

The White Collection By RM Sotheby’s

As the Porsche market continues its surge, RM Sotheby’s are preparing to host an incredible sale known simply as The White Collection.

The White Collection is a unique group of rare Porsche models, all painted in various shades of white. Set to go to auction at the beginning of December, The White Collection is a culmination of more than a decade of collecting by a single (very dedicated) owner.

In total, there are 63 motor vehicle lots in The White Collection. 56 of these are Porsche sports cars and there are even two Porsche tractors on offer too! There will also be beautifully preserved Porsche memorabilia available, bringing the entire auction up to more than 500 individual lots.

The auction is set to take place in America at a venue that has been described as a ‘Porsche sanctuary’. High ceilings, sparkling floors, and a bright, spacious environment will perfectly match the aesthetic of The White Collection.

Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions at RM Sotheby’s said “To truly comprehend this collection’s depth, one has to understand the secondary Porsche market. Paint-to-sample supercars and classic sports cars in original condition have seen their values skyrocket, a consistent pattern in our sales. These vehicles, which show high originality and remarkably low mileage, are among the most sought-after Porsche sports cars in the current market. With the global demand for Porsche and the unique chance to buy these cars, The White Collection promises to be another unparalleled event for RM Sotheby’s.”

Highlights Of The White Collection

2015 Porsche 918 ‘Weissach’ Spyder – the main event of The White Collection. This incredible car is an exceptional interpretation of Porsche’s contemporary hypercar. Originally delivered to The White Collection through Porsche of North Houston, this remarkable car has just 12 miles on its odometer and is finished in a custom paint-to-sample Grand Prix White (9A5) with colour-coordinated magnesium wheels. It features a lavish interior made of LTS Yachting Blue leather with Bianco Leda piping.

The current owner has spared no expense in personalising this Porsche, investing over $96,000 (approx £79,000) in bespoke enhancements through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, including the coveted Weissach performance package. The vehicle comes complete with an extensive collection of authentic 918 accessories. Notably, it stands as the only 918 Spyder ever made with this configuration. Estimated value: $2,500,000 – $3,000,000 (approximately £2,000,000 – £2,500,00).

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring – this genuine Carrera RS 2.7 Touring has been meticulously kept by a single owner for close to two decades. It still boasts its original 911/83 engine and gearbox, and it showcases its factory appearance with a Grand Prix White exterior adorned with blue Carrera lettering, all complemented by a Black leatherette interior. Estimated value: $900,000 – $1,200,000 (approximately £743,000 – £990,000).

1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 – arguably, the wildest 964 ever made for a Porsche VIP. It is the last example produced in a very limited run of just 51 units and stands as one of only two “Strassenversion” RSR models handcrafted by Porsche Motorsport, featuring a fully appointed leather interior. Finished in the striking colour combination of Grand Prix White (L908) exterior paint, complemented by Can Can Red accents and luxurious Grand Prix White leather upholstery, this particular vehicle was originally delivered to the UK in March 1996. Rediscovered in 2015, it currently shows just 70 km (approximately 43 miles) on its odometer since new. Impressively, it still sports its original tyres and retains its numbers-matching engine and gearbox. Estimated value: $2,000,000 – $2,500,000 (approximately £1,650,000 – £2,000,000)

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight – This rare USA-delivered vehicle was initially configured with the highly sought-after lightweight Sport (M471) package. Estimated value: $1,750,000 – $2,000,000 (approximately £1,440,000 – £1,650,000).

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo S X85 ‘Flat-Nose’ – one of the limited production run of just 39 units crafted for the United States market in 1994, this extraordinary hand-built, high-performance, air-cooled masterpiece has a lavish interior with Rootwood accents and plush Cashmere Beige leather upholstery. 2-Mile VW Beetle Sells For £50,000

A 1979 VW Beetle Karmann Cabriolet recently sold at an auction in Lemington Spa, hosted by Classic Car Auctions for an incredible £49,500.

Initial estimates indicated a sale price of £10,000 – £12,000, however, the Brazil Brown Beetle sparked a bidding war before selling at almost five times this estimate.

The reason for such a competitive bidding war is the fact that, despite being more than four decades old, the classic Beetle has just two miles on the clock! Found tucked away in a garage covered in a protective sheet, the original buyer is believed to have been a car dealer from the Midlands who bought the car and then stored it away safely. Following his death, the car was unearthed from its lifelong home.

Thanks to its lack of use and its life in storage, the convertible Beetle is in almost as-new condition, adding to the appropriateness of its nearly £50,000 price tag.

Simon Langsdale, who sourced the car for CCA, said: “This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime find. The car has literally been in storage all its life and has an incredible two miles on the odometer, which we are told is correct. It has quite evidently been cosseted, as it was covered in blankets in a sealed environment and has just recently been uncovered due to a bereavement. It is in effect a ‘new’ 1979 Karman Beetle, surely an unrepeatable opportunity. Supplied with its original handbook and service booklet, clearly with no stamps!”

Details From Classic Car Auctions

  • Once in a lifetime find in Brazil Brown with an Oatmeal interior, matching roof and tonneau cover
  • UK-supplied new by JEM Volkswagen of Walsall as one of the last RHD Karmann Convertibles
  • In storage all its life, it has an incredible two miles on the odometer which we are told is correct
  • Supplied with its original handbook and service booklet, clearly with no stamps!
  • The car has been cossetted and covered in blankets in a sealed environment and has just recently been uncovered due to a bereavement
  • An ‘as new’ 1979 VW Beetle

BMW Z1 For Sale

A rare 1991 BMW Z1 is set to be sold in an online auction through Car & Classic. Owned from new by a BMW dealership in La Spezia, Italy, it was sold in 2021 to its current owner who has kept this beautiful vehicle’s originality – amazingly, this includes the Z1’s original Pirelli tyres! The car has been used sparingly throughout its life and has covered just 5,800 miles.

BMW Z1

The BMW Z1 was something of a renegade sports car during its brief production run from 1988 to 1991. In response to a growing demand for open-top sports cars, the Z1 was a highly recognisable addition to BMW’s lineup. What really set the Z1 apart was its innovative design, in particular, its futuristic vertically sliding doors. These doors, which were unlike anything seen before, not only added to the car’s eye-catching appearance but also served a practical purpose, making getting in and out easy, even in tight parking spaces.

Beneath its innovative exterior, the Z1 featured a front-mid engine layout and near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution (49/51). The revolutionary new ‘Z Axle’ technology was introduced on the Z1 and went on to be used on the E36 Three Series. Powering the Z1 is a 2.5-litre M20 straight-six engine mated to a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, delivering 168bhp and a top speed of 140mph.

1991 BMW Z1

Far beyond being merely ‘the BMW with unconventional doors,’ this car represents a significant milestone as BMW’s first open-top sports car in decades, following the discontinuation of the 507 in 1960. Emerging from BMW’s new ‘Technik’ division, the Z1 was unveiled as a concept in 1986, initially not destined for production. However, in 1987, BMW surprised everyone by confirming its market debut, resulting in a reported 35,000 preorders! Due to its unconventional design and handcrafted construction, production of the Z1 was slow, to say the least. This, coupled with the huge popularity of Mazda’s newly introduced, mass-produced MK1 MX-5, played a role in the Z1 project’s ultimate demise after just three years, ending the production run of just 8,000 units.

Despite modest sales figures, the Z1 received critical acclaim, with LJK Setright praising its “marvellous balance in everything from chassis dynamics to control-matching,”

While some of the Z1’s 278 Traumschwarz thermoplastic body panels may require minor repairs for cracks and scuffs, its overall condition remains very good. The interior features camouflage-patterned materials and a period-correct radio. Both major moving body parts—the roof and doors—operate exactly as they should and the vehicle also comes with its original Italian user manual, service documentation, Italian registration, and toolkit.

The Auction

Car & Classic’s auction for the 1991 BMW Z1 is scheduled to go live on October 1st and will run until October 8th. A previous Z1 sold on Car & Classic for just under £50,000. With that in mind, it is expected that this example will likely sell for somewhere between £50,000 and £60,000.

Danny James Collection

An impressive collection of Matchbox toy cars, assembled by owner Danny James, recently found new homes at an auction hosted by Vectis Auctions.

The Danny James Collection featured models produced between 1975 and 1982 and included some exceptionally rare colour trial examples. Some of the cars achieved more than ten times their initial estimates as an international bidding war broke out with collectors from America, New Zealand, and China all desperately trying to get their hands on these special cars for their own collection.

There have been some big money auctions happening recently with full-size classic cars. However, despite this sale being entirely comprised of Matchbox toy cars, the collection was sold for an incredible £102,000 (including buyers premium).

One noteworthy highlight was a Matchbox Superfast Ford Escort, a factory pre-production colour trial, which sold for a staggering £2,817, far exceeding its £400 estimate.

A Citroen CX Estate colour trial found a new owner at a price of £2,327, while a Pontiac Firebird colour trial sold for £1,715. Other standout lots included a Ford Capri Hot Rocker, produced in Brazil, that sold for £1,837. A Ford 4×4 Open Back Truck was won with a bid of £735, and a Superfast BMW 3.0 CSL, initially estimated at £70, sold for an impressive £637.

The Danny James Collection

The two-day auction, which featured an extensive offering of nearly 1,000 lots, some comprising of multiple toys, was held by Vectis Auctions, located in Teeside. Danny, a long-time collector from London, who has been building his Matchbox collection since his early years, was obviously very happy with the result although he expressed sadness at saying goodbye to the models he had owned for so long.

Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Going To Auction

A very special Ford Sierra Cosworth is going up for sale at an auction hosted by Iconic Auctioneers at the NEC Classic Motor Show on 11th November.

Initially used as a Ford press and promotional vehicle, this fantastic car has had only one private owner since then, and it has covered just 12,530 miles over its lifetime. This will be the first time the car has been available for sale (and out of storage) in nearly 34 years.

1987 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500

With a known history for every day of its existence, this special Sierra Cosworth (D64 XVX) has a guide price of £100,000 – £140,000.

On April 22, 1987, it was sent to Aston Martin Tickford Limited and underwent a transformation from a Sierra Cosworth into a fully-fledged RS500 by the time it left on June 23, 1987. This particular example is believed to be the 13th RS500 produced. Immediately after leaving Aston Martin, it was registered for road use by its first owner, the Ford Motor Company of Eagle Way in Brentford. It remained in Ford’s ownership for a year and was employed as a press and promotional vehicle, as evidenced by its feature in What Car magazine’s September 1987 issue, titled ‘Ford’s 500.’ A copy of this magazine will accompany the vehicle.

Once its duties with Ford were fulfilled, the Sierra changed hands and was acquired by its second and current owner on June 1, 1988. Originally intended to be used for promotional purposes once more, the actual fate of the car took a different turn due to work commitments. Around a year after its current owner got the car, it was placed into storage. It was lifted onto stands, its wheels removed, and protective covers were placed over it. Since then, it has remained in this state, untouched, until now.

A Lost Car, Found

In the extremely knowledgeable RS500 community, the car was believed to have vanished many years ago. Numerous attempts were made over the years to locate it, all without success. However, as interest in these rare 1980s homologation specials surged, the owner decided to find a new caretaker for this Sierra, which has seen the light of day for the first time in decades.

After reinstalling its wheels and removing the covers, the Sierra emerged from its long-term garage confinement, and almost immediately had a photo shoot ready for the auction. As you can see from the photos, its external and internal condition is nothing short of exceptional, showing no obvious signs of deterioration. It stands as a remarkable and exemplary example, boasting an incredibly low and verified mileage of just 12,530 from new.

After careful consideration, the decision has been made, by its current owner, to offer ‘D64 XVX’ exactly as it emerged from storage after more than three decades, without any attempts to start, run, or alter the vehicle in any way.

It’s worth noting that if the new owner wants to get the car back out on the road, it will need to undergo a full recommissioning.

Jessica Hawkins Test Drives AMF1 Team Car

Jessica Hawkins, the Driver Ambassador for the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula 1 Team (AMF1 Team), recently became the first woman in almost five years to drive a Formula 1 car as she test-drove the team’s car at the Hungaroring in Hungary.

A prominent figure in motorsport, Jessica Hawkins, who is 28 years old and boasts a W Series podium finish and a British Karting Championship, initially joined the AMF1 Team in 2021 in the role of Driver Ambassador. Her involvement with the team expanded over time, with Jessica commencing preparatory simulator work at the team’s Silverstone facility in 2022 in anticipation of her debut Formula 1 test.

This drive meant that Jessica achieved a lifelong dream, becoming the first woman to drive a Formula 1 car since 2018. She completed multiple sessions behind the wheel of the AMR21, sharing driving duties with the team’s Test and Reserve Driver, Felipe Drugovich.

Jessica’s successful test outing marks an important point in her partnership with the AMF1 Team, providing valuable insights as she gears up to support the team’s entry into the all-female F1 Academy series set for 2024.

Jessica Hawkins said:

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone at AMF1 Team for having the trust in me, believing in me, and for giving me this opportunity.

“It’s taken me every bit of blood, sweat and tears to get here. When I first heard it might be a possibility, I could hardly believe it.

“I’ve had to keep it secret for months now – which was pretty hard! It’s been absolutely worth it and it’s given me really valuable insight. Nothing will compare to the acceleration and braking of a Formula One car and, having looked at the data, I’m really proud of my performance.

“Getting to drive the AMR21 has been a dream come true for me and one I’ve been ready to fulfil for a long time. I’ll keep pushing for more and, in the process, I want to inspire other women and let them know they should follow their dream no matter what it is.”

Mike Krack, Team Principal, AMF1 Team, said:

“This is a special moment – for both AMF1 Team and for Jessica, who is an important member of our driver squad.

“We were really impressed by Jessica’s preparation for the test – she worked incredibly hard with our simulator team and that made it an easy decision to put her in the AMR21.

“Jessica approached the opportunity with great maturity; she was up to speed quickly and found a nice rhythm.

“This has been a hugely significant moment in Jessica’s journey with AMF1 Team and I am pleased we could give her this next step in her development journey by testing a modern Formula One car.”

Robert Sattler, F1 Evolution Programme Director, AMF1 Team, added:

“Jessica excelled in her first F1 test. After the installation lap we had a small delay as the circuit was hit by heavy rain. That resulted in a green track and on her first proper run there were still some damp patches in a few corners.

“Jessica progressively built up speed on a tricky track while managing flawlessly the complexity of the AMR21 car. Her feedback was precise and correlated with our data. After three runs, the track had dried and she was already matching the reference lap speeds.

“Overall, Jessica executed an excellent test programme with a very professional attitude and we hope to see her in the car again soon.”

Aston Martin-Triumph DB1 Special

At the recent 30th Anniversary sale hosted by H&H, a very special and unique vehicle was up for sale. The 1950 (1961) Aston Martin-Triumph DB1 Special.

The Story Of The Aston Martin-Triumph DB1 Special

The roots of the story can be traced back to World War II when the Aston Martin Company was under the ownership of R.G. Sutherland. Just before the war began, the company’s chief engineer devised a 2-litre (1970cc) 4-cylinder pushrod engine, which boasted a 90 BHP output. Dr Rollason, the current owner of the vehicle, suspects that there might have been intentions to supercharge it. Following the war, production commenced, leading to the casting of approximately 70 engine blocks and the construction of 18 cars. One of these cars, driven by Sir John Horsfall, secured Britain’s first significant post-war motorsport victory at Spa in 1948.

At the same time, the company came under the ownership of David Brown, who subsequently acquired the Lagonda company. This acquisition led to the introduction of a 6-cylinder twin overhead camshaft engine that had been designed by W.O. Bentley. This 2590cc engine produced 105 BHP at 5000 RPM in standard form and 120 BHP in “Vantage” form. These engines went on to power future Aston Martin models, which later became known as the DB2. Interestingly, the initial 18 cars were retrospectively designated as DB1s, despite their design predating David Brown’s involvement.

While many of the engine blocks were assembled into engines, others served as parts cars for pre-war 2-litre models during servicing. Some were incorporated into some very interesting variants, but a considerable number of blocks remained untouched before eventually finding their way to a local scrap dealer named Coleys.

This Special Car

The engine in this vehicle, number 19, came into the possession of Aston Martin expert Dudley Coram, who later passed it on to Tony Hills, a member of the Aston factory team. This engine was installed in Mr. Hill’s 1934 Triumph Gloria. This happened with assistance from a young apprentice called Tony Tocock. During the early 1950s, the car was rumoured to have even served as a daily commuter to the factory. After Mr. Hill’s ownership, the location of the car is something of a mystery.

Around 1960, the vehicle was acquired by Mr. K.P. Brewer of Thorpe Leas, Egham Surrey. The original bodywork (from the Gloria) was replaced with the body that is still on the car – made from aluminium and steel. After this transformation, Surrey County Council assigned a new chassis number (SYC 91-4/2264) and the registration number 788 VPG to the vehicle, which had originally been registered as AUB 485. The body, which had been repaired following an accident, is attached to a modified tubular frame. The bonnet currently on the car has clearly been replaced and is lacking in quality compared to the rest of the vehicle. The steel roof was from an Austin A35, with the rest being hand-finished.

An Interesting Idea

Designer Frank Gerald Feeley was a member of Sir David Brown’s Lagonda team and had a role in the design of this new generation of Aston Martins (the 6-cylinder engine DB2 onwards) after R.G. Sutherland sold Aston Martin Ltd. It is very possible that this body was actually one of Feeley’s design practices that may have been damaged during the testing process before being repaired and fitted onto the Aston Martin/Triumph Gloria crossbreed.

Originally, in its Triumph Gloria form, the car passed an MOT in March 1961, likely one of the earliest MOTs on record. Officially, it was registered as an Aston Martin on June 22, 1961, but the subsequent ownership history remains somewhat elusive. Notably, AMOC racer Shaun Magee had possession of the car at one point, using it as a source of emergency spare parts for his DB1. Magee has said that the front seats of the car were originally in a DBR racer.

Aston Martin-Triumph DB1 Special

In 1997, the current owner purchased the car from David Wynne of Wimborne Dorset. The actual transfer of ownership took place in Poole though. The car was sent to a friend for restoration, but unfortunately, the project stalled due to the friend’s illness. The car was then retrieved to its current location, where it has remained in project form ever since. At the time, the engine was operational, and although the car is nearly complete, it is in need of restoration. The possibilities include rebodying it as a super tourer or retaining its unique saloon style, but this certainly presents an exciting opportunity for a collector or enthusiast looking to acquire what could be considered an “after-hours factory car,” with major historical significance.

The vehicle was sold with a comprehensive history file containing a vast collection of invoices dating back to 1961, communications with Surrey County Council regarding its registration, numerous exchanges with Aston Martin concerning its origin, and the fascinating story behind its build, among other valuable records.

Petrol And Diesel Vehicle Ban Delayed Until 2035

It was announced last night, by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, that the introduction of a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars has been pushed back five years, from 2030 to 2035.

The Announcement On The Petrol And Diesel Vehicle Ban

The Prime Minister started his announcement by saying that the government is “completely committed” to hitting the net zero by 2050 target which former leader, Theresa May set in 2019. This means that, by 2050, the government expects the UK to not be adding any additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Mr Sunak went on to say “This country is proud to be a world leader in reaching net zero by 2050. But we simply won’t achieve it unless we change. We’ll now have a more pragmatic, proportionate, and realistic approach that eases the burdens on families.”

He then went on to say that, even though an electric car is sold every 60 seconds in the UK, the government believes that there are challenges to be overcome before they become the most common form of transport. These challenges include high costs, practicality, and a lack of infrastructure for charging the vehicles. It was for these reasons that he announced the introduction of the ban will be pushed back until 2035.

Electric Vehicles

In August this year, electric vehicles were responsible for 20% of all new car registrations, with 17,243 new electric cars registered.

Up until the end of last month, there were close to 1.4 million plug-in cars registered for the road in the UK. Around 850,000 of these were full-electric vehicles and 530,000 were hybrids.

For the car manufacturers that have already spent huge amounts of money to transition over to electric cars, this delay is something of a disappointment.

What Does All This Actually Mean?

As with most government announcements, it is unclear exactly what the result of this extension will be. However, there have already been several predictions.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) advises the government on cutting carbon emissions. Earlier this year, the CCC said that the government’s progress towards its net zero commitments was “worryingly slow”. Despite acting as advisors, the CCC says it wasn’t consulted before the Prime Minister made his announcement.

The chair of Ford UK, Lisa Brankin, released a statement yesterday saying ” The UK 2030 target is a vital catalyst to accelerate Ford into a cleaner future. Our business needs three things from the UK government: ambition, commitment and consistency. A relaxation of 2030 would undermine all three.”

This follows Ford’s current investment of £430 million into its UK facilities with further investment planned to meet the initial 2030 date.

Petrol And Diesel Vehicle Ban

The plan to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles will only impact brand-new vehicles (at least initially). Internal combustion-powered vehicles will still be able to be purchased used and the fuel will still be available long after the introduction of the ban. However, it seems feasible that, at some point, the government will ban this type of vehicle altogether.

This delay of five years certainly gives us more time to transition to an alternative fuel for our cars if nothing else.

It will be interesting to see the true impact of Rishi Sunak’s announcement in the next few years. It’s difficult to accurately guess how the automotive industry will look by the end of the next decade or two!

Aston Martin DB1 Heading To Auction

An extremely rare 1949 Aston Martin 2/2.6-Litre Sports ‘DB1’ is heading to auction at the H&H Classics 30th anniversary sale at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford on the 20th of September 2023.

With an estimated sale price of between £100,000 – £140,000, this very special classic car is the rarest of all the ‘David Brown’ Aston Martin models and has been with its current owner for almost thirty years. While in the hands of a former owner, Shaun Magee, the car was driven competitively by the racing driver and Aston Martin engineer.

However, today it is a restoration project that, once complete, has huge potential to enter some of the world’s most prestigious car shows.

Aston Martin DB1

Only 15 DB1 cars were ever made and as ‘DB149’ holds chassis number AMC/49/8, this was the eighth one produced. It comes fitted with a 2.6-litre DOHC straight-six powerplant that was subsequently installed by Magee during the 1970s and was also re-bodied in period by the Swallow Coachbuilding Company.

Damian Jones, senior motorcar specialist, at H&H Classics said “As part of our 30th anniversary sale, it seems only fitting that we are able to offer such a stunning and rare car, which has been in the same ownership for almost the same amount of time as our existence. The car boasts a truly fascinating history and now is the time for someone else to write its next chapter. The sale will be an exceptional opportunity to breathe new life into a car that’s been an important part of motoring history and is ripe to make history again.”

“The DB1 is just one of the many stunning motorcars that we have the privilege to offer for sale in our anniversary auction. With a host of entertainment throughout the event, the auction promises to be one of the highlights of this summer’s classic car calendar. We look forward to welcoming vendors, prospective buyers and classic car enthusiasts for not only a great sale, but also a wonderful day of celebrations.”

H&H’s 30th anniversary sale will be held on September 20th at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. Viewing will also take place on Tuesday 19th September from midday to 8 pm. Anyone interested in bidding on the DB1 or any of the lots offered for sale, can do so in person, online, via telephone or by leaving a commission bid.

Air Ambulance Week 2023

With thousands of people needing emergency care every single day, the lifesaving services provided by air ambulances can literally be the difference between survival and death. These airborne heroes can get to those who desperately need help in a much quicker time than other services would be able to. It is because of this level of importance that we are joining Air Ambulances UK in their celebration of Air Ambulance Week 2023 – the only week of the year dedicated to raising awareness and funds for our country’s flying lifesavers.

The Importance of Air Ambulance Week

Air Ambulance Week is a nationwide event in the United Kingdom that takes place in September each year. It is an initiative to recognise and celebrate the vital work carried out by air ambulance charities across the country. These charities rely on donations to operate their helicopters, cover maintenance costs, and provide essential medical equipment that their highly skilled teams use in the worst moments of their patient’s lives. Unbelievably, the 21 air ambulance charities throughout the UK receive no day-to-day government funding and rely almost entirely on charitable donations.

To put into perspective just how much of a challenge our air ambulance charities face:

  • Collectively, air ambulance charities attend more than 37,000 lifesaving missions each year across the UK
  • Between them, air ambulances are dispatched to over 102 missions every day
  • Each mission costs, on average, £3962
  • There are 37 air ambulance helicopters operated by 21 charities
  • Without raising enough funds through charitable donations, they would not be able to do what they do

Air ambulances play a vital role in emergency healthcare, significantly reducing response times and improving survival rates in critical situations. They provide rapid transportation to hospitals for trauma victims, deliver specialised medical teams to accident scenes, and have saved countless lives directly as a result of their services. By raising awareness and funds during Air Ambulance Week, this work can continue.

East Anglian Air Ambulance And Bridge Classic Cars

Earlier this year, we teamed up with our local air ambulance charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance to raise funds to help them continue to save lives throughout Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Bedfordshire. We did this through our special charity competition where we gave the opportunity for someone to win a 1973 Triumph Spitfire for just a few pounds. By collaborating on this charity competition, we wanted to make a significant impact on EAAA’s mission of saving lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. By the end of the competition, over £17,000 was raised for EAAA and everyone here at Bridge Classic Cars was extremely proud to raise some much-needed funds for our incredible local air ambulance charity.

The money raised will help the EAAA continue its lifesaving work, ensuring that its helicopter can remain operational and equipped with the latest medical technology. This means that more people in East Anglia will have access to the rapid, expert medical care that air ambulances provide. Lives will be saved, and families will be spared the anguish of losing loved ones due to delayed emergency medical responses.

Supporting Air Ambulances

Air Ambulance Week is a reminder of the incredible work done by air ambulance charities. The heroes who work as part of these charities throughout the UK deserve huge respect for the thousands of lives they save.

However, without your help and donations, they wouldn’t be able to take to the skies and help people who need it most.

If you would like to make a donation to Air Ambulances UK as part of Air Ambulance Week 2023, you can do so here.

Hydrogen-Fuelled Toyota Hilux

Toyota has continued its progress towards its zero carbon mobility goals with the unveiling of a prototype hydrogen fuel cell powered Hilux.

This prototype is the latest addition to a range of vehicles helping the brand move towards sustainable travel as well as suiting different needs and operating conditions. With a range of powertrain options such as hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric, battery electric and fuel cell electric, Toyota is demonstrating the broad scope of its multi-technology strategy to reach that fabled zero-carbon mobility.

The potentially ground-breaking Hilux made its debut at Toyota Manufacturing UK’s Burnaston car plant in Derby, where it has been developed in a joint project with consortium partners, supported by UK Government funding.

Hydrogen Power

The new powertrain features core elements from the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric saloon. This is technology that has been in commercial production for almost 10 years and has proved its worth and quality over that period of time.

While driving, the fuel cell produces no tailpipe emissions other than pure water.

It has a driving range of 365 miles, which is quite a bit further than is likely to be achieved with a battery electric system. This increased range comes from the three high-pressure fuel tanks that are used in the prototype Hilux. Additionally, the battery stores electricity produced on-board by the fuel cell and is positioned in the rear load deck, which avoids any loss of cabin space.

History Of The Hydrogen Powered Toyota Hilux

In early 2022, the project commenced with a feasibility study conducted by TMUK and Toyota Motor Europe, in collaboration with consortium partners Ricardo, ETL, D2H Advanced Technologies, and Thatcham Research. Subsequently, funding was secured from the UK Government through the Advanced Propulsion Centre, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing cleaner technologies and innovative mobility concepts. This financial support paved the way for an intensive design and development program that kicked off on July 1st, 2022, with additional assistance from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC).

Prototype construction began on June 5th this year, adhering to the Toyota Production System principles within a dedicated section of the TMUK facility. Amazingly, the first vehicle was completed just three weeks later, marking the beginning of a series of ten vehicles planned to be completed by the end of 2023. These vehicles will undergo rigorous global testing to ensure they meet the safety, dynamic performance, functionality, and durability standards required for a production model.

This project has provided TMUK members with an opportunity to acquire and apply new expertise in the field of fuel cell electrified vehicles and hydrogen system components. The consortium members have all played pivotal roles in the initial project phase. Ricardo, for instance, has supported preparations for the prototype build, handling design and development tasks, and validating the entire manufacturing process concurrently with TMUK teams. Over the coming months, they will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the vehicle.

Additionally, Thatcham Research, an automotive risk intelligence firm dedicated to comprehending the potential and risks of emerging vehicle technologies, has contributed to the project by offering sustainable repair consultancy and preparing hydrogen-related training materials for the repair market.

Minister for Industry and Economic Security Nusrat Ghani said: “We have an amazing manufacturing sector here in the UK, and this is a great example. It’s fantastic to see Toyota reach another milestone on their journey to zero emissions here in Britain, and I congratulate the project team for their success on this cutting-edge development.  This is a great vote of confidence in UK manufacturing and its potential to deliver carbon-free vehicles to meet future targets.”

Richard Kenworthy, TMUK Managing Director, said: “The project team have accomplished an incredible job in a very short space of time, from creating the prototype build area to completion of the first vehicle. The UK Government funding has enabled us not only to develop a new vehicle in record time, but also to upskill our teams to work on hydrogen-related technologies, something we hope to build on in the future.

Ian Constance APC Chief Executive, said: “The Toyota Hilux project is a fantastic example of collaborative R&D which has designed, integrated, and delivered a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. UK Government funding through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) anchors capability in R&D, which helps safeguard and creates new jobs for the future. It embeds the next generation of net-zero vehicles and technologies in the UK.

“The project consortium has made significant progress to deliver several vehicle demonstrators developed and built in the UK. Seeing the prototype hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Hilux global launch within a year of the start of the project is a clear demonstration of the capabilities and strengths of the UK’s automotive supply chain.”

Ferrari – A Film About Enzo Ferrari

Towards the end of 2023, a very exciting film will be released – Ferrari.

This is the story of the legendary Enzo Ferrari.

With only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs ever being produced, every one of them is special. However, this one, chassis 3765 is extra special as it was the only one that was owned by the Ferrari factory and raced by the Scuderia Ferrari team.

A Racing Heritage Unlike Any Other

Beyond its stunning visual appeal and rarity, chassis number 3765 boasts an awe-inspiring racing pedigree. The 1962 Ferrari 330 LM/250 GTO was born in an era when motorsport was a crazy mix of skill and bravery, and this car achieved huge success throughout its racing life. Under the guidance of legendary drivers such as Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini, this vehicle raced in some of the most well-known races in the world, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 1962 Ferrari GTO we’re bringing to market is more than a classic; it’s a legend. To me, there is no better place to showcase this automotive icon than New York City at Sotheby’s.

East Coast Japanese Cars & Coffee

On Sunday, Nick attended the East Coast Japanese Cars & Coffee event at the Suffolk Aviation Museum.

While there, Nick took some incredible photos which he has been kind enough to share with the rest of the team here at Bridge Classic Cars.

Nick said that he had a great time at the event and, as probably the biggest car nut in the workshop, it was the perfect place for him to spend his weekend away from classic cars – surrounded by even more cars!

If you’d like to see the full gallery of Nick’s photos and a whole load more automotive content, you can find him on Facebook and Instagram.

1988 Hustler Wooden Six-Wheeled Car Up for Auction

On 1st September, car enthusiasts will get a rare opportunity to become the new owner of a very interesting car, as Auctioneum auctions a unique 1988 Hustler 1.3L wooden six-wheeled car. The car in question was designed by the renowned William Towns, perhaps better known for being the man behind the design of the now iconic Aston Martin Lagonda.

Mr Towns sold the instructions for building the kit car from his home, with each vehicle being handbuilt by their owners making each one an entirely one-of-one example. Less than 400 of the kit cars were ever built, however, most of these were made from fibreglass. Very few were made from wood like this one, and it has been finished exceptionally well.

The quality of the build should come as no surprise seeing as the owner and builder is John Brazier, a former Rolls-Royce engineer who also helped work on the supersonic jet, Concorde back in the 1960s. After his time as an engineer, Mr Brazier went on to become a woodwork and metalwork teacher.

Putting this incredible car together took Mr Brazier three summers in the mid-1980s before it became the family’s main car. Used regularly for more than 13 years, the Hustler took the Brazier family on a number of road trips and holidays before being put into dry storage in the early 2000s.

With room to seat eight people, the new owner of The Hustler will be able to make the most of the six wheels, a period tape deck, along with handmade wooden gear knob, handbrake lever, and steering wheel. In addition to the look of the car, Mr Brazier has said that it has never failed an MOT!

The wooden Hustler goes to auction with an estimate of £2000 – £3000 and is likely to generate a lot of attention. Just in case the new owner would like to know more about their purchase, Mr Brazier has said he is very happy to show the buyer around the vehicle and is also happy to discuss its building and operation. He’s even included a small box of assorted spares in the sale.

The Hustler will be sold in Auctioneum’s ‘Fine Art, Antiques & Classic Cars’ auction on 1st September in Bath.

Specifications Of The 1988 Hustler

  • Made from water-resistant ash and plywood
  • 1.3-litre engine from an Austin Allegro
  • Mini wheel subframes
  • Seats also come from an Austin Allegro
  • Wooden interior and body

Condition

The lot listing describes The 1988 Hustler’s condition as:

“The vehicle has been dry stored for its entire life and appears in excellent order. The vehicle was lovingly maintained its entire life, and everything was taken care of and fixed where required. At the time of parking, it suffered just a simple flat battery that was never attended to. The vehicle is free-wheeling and able to be pushed with relative ease”.
