The Bridge Classic Cars Suffolk HQ is always a busy place – with classics and modern cars coming in and out of our workshops every week. Last week, we welcomed 2 more brand new arrivals. A 1956 Jensen 541 and a 2007 Porsche 911 Carrera S. Both of these stunning cars will be looked at and taken care of by our restoration technicians.
1956 Jensen 541:
2007 Porsche 911 Carrera S:
A recent survey conducted by Isuzu UK has given us insight into how UK motorists view their own driving skills and, as it turns out, we are terrible! Well, that’s according to 15% of the drivers polled who admitted that they are bad drivers. To make things worse, 4% of drivers in the survey actually considered themselves a danger on the road!
Drivers in Cardiff, London, and Liverpool had the highest percentages of self-confessed bad drivers with 35%, 33%, and 31% of drivers in the cities owning up to their poor driving skills.
On the flip side to this, drivers in Stoke-on-Trent have the highest confidence in their driving abilities, as none admitted to being bad behind the wheel. Other cities like Nottingham (2%), Cambridge (3%), and Edinburgh (4%) also rated themselves highly in terms of driving safety.
The survey, which explored various factors contributing to these opinions, found that the challenges of modern roads play a significant role. Over half of drivers (54%) admitted they had been involved in an accident due to distractions, with 36% blaming overcrowded roads, and 32% wishing their vehicles had more advanced safety features.
Interestingly, 62% of those surveyed expressed a desire to improve their driving skills, with 61% believing they wouldnโt pass their driving test if they had to take it again. This concern is greater among drivers over the age of 60, where 63% doubt their ability to pass a modern driving test.
The study also highlighted that many drivers struggle with basic driving tasks. Around 38% find parallel parking difficult, while a third (32%) lack knowledge of car maintenance, such as checking tyre pressure or coolant levels. Other common struggles include parking in a bay (19%), driving at the speed limit (19%), and reversing around corners (17%).
“With over 50 million drivers in Great Britain, it is worrying to think that as many as 7.5 million consider themselves bad drivers. Itโs clear from the research that UK motorists face many challenges on all journeys, from smaller roads, tight parking bays and even their own vehicle. With one in three saying that having a vehicle with all the mod cons like blind spot detection and attention monitoring sensors would help them to be a better driver.
Isuzu D-Maxโs Advanced Driver Assist System takes pick-up truck safety to a whole new level thanks to rear cross traffic alert, lane departure prevention system and autonomous emergency braking so youโll never have to worry behind the wheel again. This fantastic safety doesnโt happen by accident.โ
George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK
Beyond their own skills, many drivers feel unsafe in their vehicles due to outdated technology. One-third of drivers in the survey said they wish their cars had modern features like blind spot detection and attention monitoring systems to help them drive more safely. 36% also said that driving a larger car would make them feel safer on the road.
The survey also found that men were more likely than women to admit they had been in an accident due to a lack of concentration (61% vs. 47%), and younger generations (the widely discussed Gen Z and Millennials) reported being on the receiving end of road rage more often than other groups (67%).
CITIES WITH THE WORST DRIVERS, ACCORDING TO BRITISH DRIVERS:
1. Cardiff โ 35%,
2. London โ 33%,
3. Liverpool โ 31%,
4. Plymouth โ 15%,
5. Leeds โ 12%,
6. Birmingham โ 9%,
7. Leicester โ 9%,
8. Oxford โ 9%,
9. Sheffield โ 8%,
10. Brighton โ 7%.
This research of 2,000 Britons was commissioned by Isuzu and conducted by Perspectus Global during March 2024.
To help with the fitting up of our Mercedes 500SL Jon has used the Mercedes 380SL that we currently have in The Classic Lounge as a good reference point.
As with all of our restorations the technicians and marketing teams here at Bridge Classic Cars work very well together to ensure that plenty of images are taken throughout the entire process
This makes the fitting up process much easier if any questions are asked. Here we have images of the bonnet furniture being fitted back up.
Our paint and body specialist Alan has been working on getting the 1951 Austin Devon Pickup back into tip top condition. He has been working the panels and making sure that not only are all the gaps perfect but also the cab panels are perfectly level and curved where they need to be.
Our amazing workshop manager, John, has been working on the 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window which is in our workshops for a couple of jobs.
This time, John has been rebuilding the carburettor of the classic aircooled Volkswagen chasing down a slight dead spot. John completely cleared out the entire carburettor including spending meticulously inspecting and cleaning out the jets. After that, John fitted up the new gasket and filter kits before getting it back on top of the flat-four engine.
The workshop team at the Bridge Classic Cars Suffolk HQ have been working their way through our classic 1979 Ferrari 400, recommissioning each system of the car.
This time, Jon has been continuing his work on the underside of the Maranello masterpiece with the exhaust system. He has to make several new sections of the rear of the exhaust which involved cutting, slotting and clamping the replacement pieces to the back boxes, while also having to remake 1 of the original exhaust mounts.
Next up, Jon moved over to the offside of the classic Ferrari to get the exhaust and oil cooler sorted out. To begin with, Jon had to modify the mounts to add some extra clearance, before installing the exhaust system. With that now in place, Jon could fit up the rear anti-roll bar links before moving onto getting the gearbox oil cooler into place with some modifications to the hoses and pipework to get everything safely fit back into the car, which included sleeving some of the pipework in what could become contact areas over time as well as putting heatwrap on the pipes to protect them from the exhaust which run close by.
Our 1953 Aston Martin DB2/4 has taken a massive step forward over the past week as the Bridge Classic Cars restoration team have reunited the repaired body back onto the refurbished and refinished chassis of this classic Aston Martin.
Rob, one of our technicians, has been heading up this phase of the project – He, along with several members of the team, carefully reunited the body and the chassis inch by inch for the final time before it heads off to the body and paint team to begin its journey back into colour.
The workshop team here at the Bridge Classic Cars HQ have been continuing their work on getting the 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe closer to getting back on the road – this time quite literally!
Rob, one of our restoration technicians, has been working on building up the front suspension of the rare sports car. Focusing on the right hand side, he has built up the front uprights after they had been stripped, inspected and refinished. These will be carefully wrapped up and put into storage awaiting their time to be fitted to the chassis of the car soon. Along side that, Rob has bench built the rear brakes which also await their moment to be reunited with the rest of the running gear on the car.
From Molly’s weekend at the ‘Steam Back to the Forties’ event hosted by North Norfolk Railways to Jaguar C-Type Replicas, and a q&a about classic car auctions, this episode is full of a whole lot of automotive chat.
Filmed in The Classic Lounge, this week’s Torque Show involves Molly, Craig, Rob, Gordon, and John as they sit down over a cup of coffee to talk about what has been going on over the last week or so.
McLaren Automotive has just confirmed the successor to the now iconic F1 and P1…the McLaren W1.
The new car will be revealed on Sunday 6th October 2024 at 13:00 BST and, I imagine, it’s going to be something as eye-catching as you’d expect!
All we know so far is that the W1 name has been chosen to celebrate McLaren’s “World Championship mindset” which explains why the 6th of October has been selected as the official reveal – this is the 50th anniversary of McLaren winning its first Formula 1 Constructor’s Championship in the same year that Emerson Fittipaldi won the World Driversโ Championship with McLaren.
While filming episode 4 of the Bridge Classic Cars Torque Show, it seemed like a great opportunity to take some candid photos to show you how things work in putting a show like this together.
It may only be a 20 – 30-minute show that seems to run smoothly but, a lot of time and effort goes into making every single one. That being said, we always have fun and it’s a fantastic opportunity to talk to each other about all things automotive.
During our live draws for Bridge Classic Cars Competitions, the whole team is busy making sure things go as smoothly as possible.
However, we always try to take some candid behind-the-scenes photos from time to time so you can see what goes on while you’re watching along.
On Wednesday, 9th October, H&H Classics will host an auction at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. At the company’s final Cambridgeshire auction of the year, there will be 160 classic, collectable, and performance cars going under the hammer. The total value of these vehicles is estimated at over ยฃ6.5 million, which is sure to attract plenty of attention from all those in attendance.
Craig and Gordon will be ready to bid as they are heading to Duxfrod for the auction. Excitingly, Me, Nick, and Molly will also be going to meet up with some of the H&H team before the auction for some filming!
Another exciting point about this particular auction is the range of cars on offer, with models spanning over 120 years of motoring history – from early 20th-century classics to more modern performance cars.
โItโs great to mark our final Duxford sale of the year with such an impressive collection of vehicles for sale. We always have fantastic and well attended auctions in Cambridgeshire, and with such an extensive and diverse offering, I expect Octoberโs sale to be no different.โ
James McWilliam, sales manager, H&H Classics
One of the most interesting lots is a rare 1957 Bentley S1 Continental Park Ward Drophead Coupรฉ Adaption, which is expected to sell for somewhere between ยฃ300,000 and ยฃ400,000. While this is obviously a high ticket car, there are actually 23 cars being offered without reserve, so thereโs a chance that the everyday auction goer can walk away with something special too.
Also available is a 1980 pre-production Lotus Esprit โEssexโ Turbo which was used to develop Active Suspension for Formula One and is thought to be the first vehicle in the world with this technology. Itโs expected to sell for between ยฃ70,000 and ยฃ80,000 and will make a great addition to someone’s collection.
There are several Aston Martin DB6s on offer too, including a 1967 model estimated at ยฃ250,000 to ยฃ300,000 as well as a 2001 Aston Martin Vanquish, which was used by Pierce Brosnan and EON Productions to promote Die Another Day.
I recently spoke about a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2, purchased by Madonna for her son Rocco which will be available to buy in the auction. It’s being offered without reserve and I’m always interested to see how much celebrity connections influence what people are prepared to pay for a car.
There are some pretty rare finds that will be available too. A 1970 Ford Escort Mexico, estimated at ยฃ60,000-ยฃ70,000, is the oldest known surviving car from Fordโs Advanced Vehicle Operations (I’ve also spoken about this recently). And, if you have a spare ยฃ300,000-ยฃ350,000, you could be the new owner of a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Weymann Coach!
New owners will also be found for a 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 litre โSemi-Lightweightโ Coupe, one of just 19 ย 1939 Frazer Nash-BMW 327/80 Cabriolet, and a rare ย 1955 Austin Healey 100M BN1 โLe Mansโ
All of the cars will be available for viewing from midday on Tuesday, 8th October, and the auction itself begins at 1 pm the next day. I’m very much looking forward to seeing all of the vehicles up close, even if I’m not in a position to actually bid on any of them.
At Bridge Classic Cars, we want to give our guests a special experience every time they come to see us. Thatโs why weโre very excited to have a bottle of Dutch Barn Vodka in The Classic Lounge.
Dutch Barn Vodka was founded by Chris Fraser, in an old Dutch barn on Ellers Farm in North Yorkshire. After spotting unused apples in an abandoned orchard, Chris set about creating a high-quality vodka using British apples while also having sustainability at the forefront of his operations.
From a small pot still back then, Dutch Barn Vodka has now become a successful distillery, producing award-winning vodka thatโs recognised not only for its taste but also for its positive environmental impact.โ
The distillery uses local water sourced from beneath the farm, and the brown glass bottles the vodka comes in are made from over 60% recycled glass – far more than the industry standard for clear bottlesโ.
Plus, the distillery runs on renewable energy, reducing its carbon footprint even further.
Each batch of Dutch Barn Vodka is distilled a minimum of 70 times to make sure the finish is as smooth as possible. The apples are complemented by a small amount of potato spirit, adding a creamy texture that balances the natural fruitiness.
In 2023, Dutch Barn Vodka was joined by comedian Ricky Gervais as co-owner of Ellers Farm Distilleryโ.
Ricky has taken on a creative leadership role within the brand, helping to share its message of quality, sustainability, and innovation. His aim is to bring Dutch Barn Vodka to a wider audience while ensuring that the company continues to produce exceptional, planet-friendly vodkaโ.
Next time youโre at Bridge Classic Cars, you will have to have a glass of Dutch Barn Vodka and try it for yourself. Ricky Gervais is also set to be just down the road from the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in Ipswich soon, so we will definitely be enjoying some of his vodka while he entertains our local friends.
UK car production saw a drop of 8.4% in August, according to recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Traditionally, August is a low-production month anyway as a result of summer shutdowns, and this yearโs decrease only amounted to 3,781 fewer vehicles, with 41,271 cars coming off the assembly lines.
This decline aligns with the ongoing trend seen throughout the year, as factories reduce the output of existing models and prepare to produce new ones, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). This shift follows last yearโs announcement of ยฃ24 billion in investment into the UK’s automotive industry.
Production of electrified vehicles, including battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models, took a big hit, dropping by 25.9%. This brought the share of electrified vehicles to 29.6% of total output. However, the fall is expected to be temporary as manufacturers transition to new models.
Domestic production experienced a steep decline of 19.8%. However, itโs worth noting that this figure is amplified by the typically low production volume in August, with most UK-made cars destined for export markets.
In comparison, exports decreased by 5.9%, largely driven by changes to models destined for the EU. The European Union remains the largest export market for UK-made cars, accounting for nearly half (49.8%) of exports. Other key markets include the US (17%), China (6.5%), Japan (5.1%), and Australia (4.4%), with notable growth in both the US and Japanese markets.
Year-to-date figures reveal an overall decline in UK car production of 8.5%, with a total of 522,823 units produced. Despite Augustโs domestic downturn, production for the UK market is up 12.3% for the year.
Hennessey, a hypercar and high-performance vehicle manufacturer in Texas, has just released its even more potent alternative to the Ford F-150 Raptor – the Hennessey Venom 800 F-150 and it is an absolute beast!
As there were so many customers who missed out on the Raptor R, Hennessey decided to create something new to subdue the disappointed petrolheads which led to the introduction of the Venom 800 F-150 which has some pretty impressive specifications.
Don’t be fooled by the size of this truck – it’s not just a very capable workhorse but it is also exceptionally fast. Producing 800 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 757 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm the Venom 800 can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and cover a quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds!
โDemand for powerfully designed and engineered Hennessey trucks continues to grow strongly. Our new Venom 800 F-150 is the super truck that our clients have been asking for. Highly capable both on- and off-road, it offers the perfect combination of performance, utility, and luxury.โ
John Hennessey, company founder and CEO
This Venom 800 features some pretty extensive upgrades including significant improvements to the suspension, wheels, tyres, and powertrain. Some of the most exciting upgrades are the addition of a 3.0-litre supercharger, upgraded air-to-water intercooler, high-performance fuel injection, and a high-flow air induction system. These have been paired with Hennessey’s proprietary engine management calibration, a dual-tip cat-back exhaust, and six-piston Brembo brakes to further beef up the Venom 800โs capabilities.
In addition to the sheer power of the Venom 800, the truck is also very capable off-road. It features a six-inch BDS suspension lift with FOX coilovers, improved rear shocks, 20-inch Hennessey 10-spoke wheels, and 35-inch off-road tyres. The tough front and rear โVenomโ bumpers are made of steel and come with integrated LED off-road lights in the front.
Despite its power, speed, and durability, the Venom 800 is also stylish and comfortable. It has a one-piece carbon fibre grille, electronic fold-out running boards, and illuminated Venom 800 badges on the front fenders. Inside, the truck has embroidered Hennessey script on the headrests, all-weather floor mats, American flag inserts, and a serial-numbered plaque.
For 2024, only 250 units of this limited-edition model will be available globally.
Back in 2015, the team behind Iconic Auctioneers (previously known as Silverstone Auctions), formed Classic Car Auctions (CCA). The company has always operated independently of its sister company and has specialised in Everyman Classics. However, things are changing and the two companies are about to merge with Iconic Auctioneers being the name for the combined companies.
The Classic Car Sale being hosted by CCA on September 28, 2024, at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, will be the final auction held under the Classic Car Auctions Ltd. name. From October, CCA will officially be acquired by Iconic Auctioneers Ltd, merging the two companies into one.
Despite the acquisition, the team behind Classic Car Auctions will remain the same, and the auctions will continue to be hosted at many of their familiar venues. However, there will be a fresh look. The auctions will be rebranded as The Classic Sales by Iconic Auctioneers, with a new logo and branding to match.
โMost of our customers know that CCA and IA are sister companies, so bringing them together as one company makes sense, but more importantly it will significantly enhance the exposure of the CCA cars on the Iconic Auctioneers website, which is a much busier site. It will also allow buyers to search for specific marques across all our sales in one place. As well as offer customers a wider range of services including Iconic Auctioneers online, motorcycle, automobilia and private sales.โ
Rob Hubbard, Managing Director of Iconic Auctioneers
From early October, visitors to the Classic Car Auctions website will be redirected to iconicauctioneers.com.
On this website, youโll be able to browse upcoming and past Classic Sales, along with other auctions offered by Iconic Auctioneers. The site will use a colour-coding system to differentiate the sales – Classic Sales will have a burgundy sidebar and feature the new CCA logo, while Iconic Auctioneers sales will display a blue sidebar with their IA logo.
This updated branding will also be reflected on the companyโs social media channels and advertisements.
We very often attend auctions hosted by both companies so we are excited to see what the future holds now they are becoming one!
Hyundai Motor Company and ล koda Group have joined forces to try to advance hydrogen mobility by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Korea-Czech Business Summit, held in Prague on September 20th, 2024. This collaboration aims to promote the adoption of hydrogen technology in the transportation sector, contributing to a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
The signing ceremony featured Ken Ramรญrez, Executive Vice President of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Business at Hyundai Motor Company, and Petr Novotnรฝ, CEO of ล koda Group. Both companies pledged their commitment to exploring hydrogen fuel cell systems and energy-efficient solutions for future mobility projects.
โWe believe that hydrogen, alongside energy-efficient solutions, will play an essential role in transforming mobility for a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company aims at enabling us to look beyond national borders and explore wider markets where these technologies can have a larger impact. By working together, we can bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to the global mobility ecosystem, advancing cleaner energy in the areas where it’s needed most,โ
Petr Novotnรฝ, CEO of ล koda Group.
Both companies share the belief that hydrogen will play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable society, particularly within the transportation sector. Hyundai will provide its expertise in hydrogen fuel cell systems and technology to accelerate eco-friendly mobility in markets where ล koda operates, including the Czech Republic.
Beyond mobility, the companies will also investigate the potential applications of hydrogen technology in other sectors. Hyundaiโs global experience in hydrogen applications positions it to support broader energy transitions. Through this partnership, both Hyundai and ล koda aim to create a strong hydrogen ecosystem.
โOur partnership with ล koda Group aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption, which would contribute to the advancement of hydrogen technology and carbon neutrality across global markets, including the Czech Republic. Together with ล koda Group, we strive to lead the rapidly growing hydrogen businesses by creating positive synergies between our fuel cell technology and ล koda Groupโs mobility products and projects.โ
Ken Ramรญrez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Business, Hyundai Motor Company
Molly, Craig and Rob sat down at the Bridge Classic Cars Classic Lounge to go through all the exciting things which have been happening at our Suffolk HQ this week.
We speak about our latest competition car, which we’re very excited to share with you, our 1970 Jaguar E-Type which could be yours for less than a cup of coffee! And generally about the E-Type and going on road trips with classics.
The team talk about our amazing time at the International Autojumble thanks to our friends at the Beaulieu National Motor Museumย and the incredible display they have in their wonderfully curated museum – and the results of our automotive interior design challenge where Rob & Nick were challenged by Molly to find some pieces for our Members Club HQ, The Classic Lounge.
We look back on this week’s competition winners, who won our 1959 Ford Zephyr and Frederique Constant Runabout Watch Set.
A 1974 Triumph Spitfire recently came into the Bridge Classic Cars workshop so that the team could assess and inspect it for any potential future work.
Our 1971 Morris Mini Cooper S and our 1939 Morris 8 Series E were both recently collected and transported to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.
Our friends at H&H Classics have moved out of their long-standing base into a temporary location in preparation for a permanent move into new premises. Their eventual new home will be something of a hub for the classic car community and we are very much looking forward to seeing it in the very near future.
H&H has been hosting auctions for more than 30 years, with almost 20 of those having its base at The Motor House in Warrington. For the time being, Cinnamon House in Warrington is where the team at H&H will be working from but the permanent location will be designed to host auctions, automotive events, and more.
The new premises aim to be an ideal base for clients and employees, with the H&H Management stating their commitment to ensuring it offers a productive and enjoyable work environment.
โH&H Classics plays an integral role in the classic car community, so weโre keen to make sure our future location will give something back to enthusiasts, as well as being an exciting base for our business and our employees. Watch this space for more details, which we will announce in due course.โ
– Colette McKay, managing director at H&H Classics
Although headquartered in Cheshire, H&H Classics hosts auctions throughout the UK, including in Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire, and the West Midlands. This national presence has helped the company build and develop a huge network of clients and industry contacts. Since the beginning of 2024, H&H has offered highly sought-after vehicles, such as a scooter featured in the film Quadrophenia and a Bentley once owned by Peter Sellers. A recent automobilia auction at the Warrington location saw every single lot successfully sold, proving the auction house’s continued success.
While fond memories are obviously attached to The Motor House, H&H Classics is keen to move into the next chapter of its story with its soon-to-be-announced new premises.
โWeโll miss The Motor House as we have fond memories built up over nearly two decades, but more importantly substantial new premises will be revealed soon and, we hope, will be a beacon for classic car owners.โ
– Colette McKay, managing director at H&H Classics
For more information about H&H and their upcoming auctions, visit www.handh.co.uk.
Earlier today, we welcomed the East Saxons Group of the TR Register to The Classic Lounge at Bridge Classic Cars.
This was the first time that the group had been to see us and we loved meeting them all.
While they were here, they were able to enjoy a coffee and a catch up with their fellow group members before having an exclusive tour of the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.
It was a great morning and we hope to welcome you all back again very soon.
The new Volkswagen Transporter has finally been revealed by film legend, Jason Statham.
For those of you who haven’t yet made the connection, Statham was in the run of films called ‘The Transporter’ where he transported any package, no matter the legality, to wherever his customers needed it to be.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) recruited Jason Statham as his on-screen character transported his cargo no matter what and VW are obviously looking to demonstrate the capabilities of the new Transporter in that way too.
The first video trailer was released on Sunday in Hanover and featured both Statham and the new Transporter van.
“We are thrilled to have Jason Statham as the face of our new campaign. Its energy and unmistakable style are a perfect match for our new Transporter, which is known for its robustness, reliability and innovative technology. The reactions to the trailer here on site and online were promising.“
– Sandra Waidelich, Head of Sales & Marketing Experience at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles
The advertising campaign is looking to demonstrate the impressive features of the van such as load capacity, superior driving characteristics, and state-of-the-art safety features.
The Transporter is back!
At the weekend, I headed down to Beaulieu with Nick and Molly for the International Autojumble at the National Motor Museum. As we are around classic cars every day, it can take quite a lot to wow us when it comes to motoring history. However, after spending some time in the museum and browsing the autojumble, all three of us were very impressed
We would all like to say a big thank you to Poppy and the rest of the team at the museum for reaching out to Molly and inviting us to the event – we all had a fantastic day!
The National Motor Museum is home to close to 300 vehicles, from early motor cars to more modern machines.
A personal favourite of mine was the 1000bhp Sunbeam that is currently being restored at the museum.
This car, known as ‘The Slug’ was the one that Major Henry Segrave drove on Daytona Beach at more than 200mph on the 29th of March 1927. This was the first time that any car had ever reached this speed and set a new land speed record. Now, almost 100 years later, the museum is slowly bringing this ground-breaking car back to life thanks to its fundraising campaign.
The campaign aims to raise ยฃ300,000 for a full restoration and to take โThe Slugโ back to Daytona Beach in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the record in 2027. Restoring a car that has two 22.5-litre V12 engines is obviously a huge task so a major fundraising campaign is needed to make it possible.
As well as ‘The Slug’, Nick clearly enjoyed seeing a 1953 Volkswagen Type 1 “Beetle” that was very similar to one he used to own. He has also said that 1953 produced his favourite version of this iconic classic.
Molly also had a great time putting the many interactive exhibits to good use!
It was great to be able to spend some time getting a closer look at some of the cars going under the hammer with Bonhams. From MGBs to E-Types and everything in between, there was a huge variety of vehicles up for sale.
The three of us haven’t been to many car auctions so to get up close with cars of this calibre certainly added another level of excitement to our day.
The Automart is where you go to find a project. Whether you are looking for a shell of a car to rebuild and bring back to life or a non-runner that will be back up and running with a little bit of time and attention – there are plenty of options.
We see cars in various stages of restoration in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop so it’s really nice that everyone in attendance had the opportunity to see some of the best-looking cars of all time in various states of repair!
The International Autojumble is a huge event that features a wide variety of car parts, memorabilia, display pieces, and everything in between.
Perhaps one example that goes some way in explaining the range of things available is by looking at what the three of us purchased. Nick got a framed poster of the Silver Arrow W196 that sold for ยฃ19 million, Molly bought a Lambretta poster, and I got a small Rolls-Royce picture and a steering wheel!
In addition to our purchases, we saw old workshop manuals, vintage petrol pumps, signs, classic car brochures from back in the day, and more tools than the entire workshop team could ever need!
We couldn’t visit the National Motor Museum without taking a ride on the monorail. The short trip allowed us to see a big part of the autojumble from above (and have a great time while doing so).
The Top Gear exhibition was definitely something all three of us loved. With Top Gear and The Grand Tour now coming to an end, it seemed so relevant that we could see some of the most iconic and memorable vehicles from the show in person.
The on-screen cars exhibit also brought back memories of TV shows and films that we have all watched over the years.
The International Autojumble was a fantastic event for us to attend. There was so much to see and so many different vehicles to look at on top of the vast number of stallholders selling some hard-to-find pieces.
As I have said previously, we have cars from the early 1900s all the way through to modern cars around us every day in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop but, even with that in mind, Molly, Nick, and I found the display vehicles to be attention-grabbing and we loved every minute of our visit.
This was our first time at the International Autojumble and we will certainly be going back again. Once again, thank you to everyone at the National Motor Museum for such a great day and we hope to see you again very soon!

It has been another busy week here at Bridge Classic Cars. Craig, Rob, and Molly sat down to talk about everything that’s been going on, including highlights of Goodwood Revival 2024. Chris, our paintshop manager, talks about dry ice blasting our Ferrari Dino. We prepare for the final episode of The Grand Tour.
It feels like forever since we last visited our Jaguar XK120 body but today’s the day. The car has been rolled out of storage and all components have been removed and sorted, ready for them all to head off for media blasting.
On Sunday, September 8th,ย Helmingham Hallย in Suffolk hostedย Suffolk Dog Day, presented byย St Elizabeth Hospice. This event was all about fun activities for the family, dog shows, and a whole load of opportunities for pet owners to celebrate the dogs in their lives. This yearโs event was even more special for us, as we brought Suffolk Dog Day into our 20th anniversary celebration.
As part of our 20th-anniversary celebrations, the team here at Bridge Classic Cars has committed to performingย 20 good deedsย throughout the year as a way of giving back to the community that has supported us over the past two decades. On Sunday, one of these good deeds was providing the vehicle being used for the donation station on behalf of RSPCA Suffolk Central. All donations received will be used in theย Martlesham Animal Rescue Centre, shops, and welfare clinics.
We had our van on site all day to receive your donations. We collected so much more than we were expecting so the delivery to the rescue centre on Tuesday morning was very exciting.
An auction taking place on Wednesday, 9th October, is offering car enthusiasts and collectors the chance to own two very special cars. The auction, hosted by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, will feature the oldest known surviving Ford AVO Car, a 1970 Ford Escort Mexico and a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2, once owned by pop legend Madonna.
Believed to be the oldest surviving model from Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO), the 1970 Ford Escort Mexico was one of the few “launch” models built in October 1970, just before official production began.
Expected to sell for between ยฃ60,000-ยฃ70,000, this car holds a special place in Fordโs history. It carries a unique โLVXโ press registration plate, indicating its use for promotional purposes by Ford. The Escort Mexico has been fully restored between 2006 and 2017, with over ยฃ60,000 invested to bring it back to its factory-original specification. The restoration was focused on preserving as many original parts as possible while using genuine replacements when needed.
This specific example was also lent to Hendon Police College and tested against trainee pursuit drivers before later being purchased by a police officer from the same driving school. The Escort is accompanied by a detailed history file, which includes a rare sales brochure, a feature in Classic Ford magazine, and the original logbook.
โItโs a privilege to offer this 1970 Ford Escort Mexico AVO car for auction.
It is an unmissable opportunity for any fast Ford fanatic as opportunities to acquire AVO cars with such provenance are truly unrepeatable.โ
This Mexico is one of the first handful of Escort Mexicoโs produced, believed to be one of four, before official production began. It is also the joint second Mexico registered, being registered new to Ford Motor Company on December 4th 1970.
We expect there to be strong interest in this very special model at our auction in October.โ
– Paul Cheetham, motor car specialist at H&H Classics
In addition to the Ford Mexico, the auction will also feature a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2 that was once owned by global music superstar Madonna. Purchased by Madonna in 2021 for her son Rocco Ritchie, it is now being offered at no reserve!
The Jaguar Mark X 4.2 is a special model in its own right. Known for its large, luxurious design, the Mark X was primarily targeted at the North American market, appealing to high-profile buyers such as diplomats and film stars. The 4.2-litre version, produced for just two years, had impressive features for its time, including independent rear suspension and a top speed of 120mph, making it a more affordable alternative to the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
The car has recently undergone a full repaint in Opalescent Maroon and comes with its original green logbook.
โItโs incredible to be offering a Jaguar for sale with such close connections to Madonna and Iโm sure fans and classic car collectors will be hung up on this Mark X.
โPutting aside its famous celebrity connection, this Big Cat is a rare 4.2 litre example that was only in production for two years, and Iโm sure Rocco would have enjoyed driving it.
There were only 5,137 Jaguar Mark X 4.2 litre models ever built. Our auction offers the chance to own an important piece of British motoring history that has also been bought by one of the most famous people on the planet. Itโs a car that will always remain in vogue.โ
– Lucas Gomersall, motor car specialist at H&H Classics
Both of these cars will be available to bid on in person, online, or via telephone at the auction on 9th October. For more information or to register to bid, visit the H&H Classics website at www.handh.co.uk.
For many of us, the petrol began to course through our veins from an early age. Whether it was a family influence, afternoons in the garage with your old man helping to get those little jobs done that you were told only your hands could do, or an external influence – the revered and legendary tones of people like Murray Walker dancing across the living room as you tuned into the coverage of Formula 1. Later, a car show on the BBC would change the automotive world and thus began a beautiful 2 and 4 wheeled journey for so many of us.
Within that octane fueled world, 22 years ago, a trio of presenters made up of an automotive journalist, a qualified musician and an art school graduate began their journey on our screens. Capturing so many moments behind the wheel of cars many of us could only dream of, and heading to far flung places that had you scrabbling in the loft for an atlas. It is of course, the Three Amigos – Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.
This unlikely group of friends would travel the world, sabotage each other and find themselves in some of the most truly unique and beautiful places imaginable – driving lorries in Burma, building a car and driving it across Mongolia, Racing against trains, planes and James May, it all unfolded on your television screens. This Friday, the 13th of September, it will all be coming to an end as we know it.
This Friday is the release of the final outing of that rag-tag team, with One for the Road. These 3 pals have helped to shape not only modern automotive media, but the larger automotive world with their catch phrases become part of the vernacular – for example, if we use the word ‘Jag’ as an example. Chances are that a fair few of you have expanded that middle vowel in your best ‘Clarkson’ voice…
Or ‘POWWWWWEEERRRRRRRRRRRRR!’ instead of just saying ‘accelerate’ when your hanging out with your other horsepower obsessed friends. Either way, the three of them managed to capture, stimulate and inspire entire generations of would-be hero drivers with their on-screen antics.
To pay tribute to this milestone in automotive media, we decided to get a couple of our team together and ask them one very simple question – What is their ‘One for the Road‘?
Anything with an internal combustion engine, any where in the world – but it’s the last time you ever get to do it – Inspired by the 2 decades of adventures ‘our’ 3 amigos have undertaken.
Jon:
Jon, one of our amazing technicians, is through and through a Ford man – legend says that when he cuts his thumb open its actually in the shape of the blue oval. Not only that, he is also a massive rally fan – especially of the late 1980’s Group B era he remembers so vividly as a young man, and an important time in his automotive life.
Car: Ford RS200
Location: Stelvio Pass, Italy
Reason: Regarded as one of the worlds most formidable and legendary driving roads with a series of sweeping and breathtaking switch back hairpins – the perfect place for his last drive.
Craig:
Craig, our managing director, began his petrol fueled journey on two wheels with his motocross bikes in the family paddock at a young age before the world opened up behind the wheel of his beloved Citroen Saxo. Accomplished on both 2 and 4 wheels, Craig’s choice comes truly from the heart and behind the wheel of his favourite car.
Car: 2010 Land Rover Defender
Location: Scotland, UK
Reason: Using his favourite car to take his family up to Scotland is a heartfelt move. Craig, who is an amazing dad to his son Loick, would take a trip up to Scotland to show the family where his family originally come from as a last octane fueled blast.
Steve:
Steve, another one of our amazing technicians, is also a man of many talents. A true petrol head at heart, he grew up building quick Mk2 Escorts with his friends while also being an accomplished motorcycle rider – having owned dozens of motorcycles, but his choice is closer to his heart. For his ‘One for the Road’ he’s decided to go back to something he’s done several times and in his mind, it doesn’t get much better.
Bike: 2003 Honda Fireblade
Location: Roads surrounding Lyn Celyn in Wales
Reason: In Steve’s mind, the roads which snake around the picturesque lake nestled in the naked, open landscape of this area of wales don’t get any better. Towards the top of the lake, is a hairpin. A long, flowing switch back which if you ever get a chance to ask Steve about, there is a light in his eye as he describes it which you just simply can’t put into words.
Nick:
Nick, which is me – so if you don’t mind I’m going to swap to 1st person for this one… I’ve been a petrolhead since I can remember. I don’t come from an automotive family really – I only found out about their 4-wheeled interests later in life once I had gone down my own automotive path. I’ve owned several air cooled cars over the years and I grew up in the Middle East, that is where my heart will forever be – lost in the sand some say…
Car: 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR
Location: Dubai, UAE to Salalah, Oman.
Reason: Having grown up in the Middle East from a very early age, the road that leads up the coast of the Gulf holds so many memories of family road trips in my mum’s Series 1 Discovery V8 to visit friends in Muscat. As you leave behind the skyscrapers, the lights and in someways the 21st century, the world becomes a much simpler place and just follow the coast and the breeze that rolls off the gulf. As you reach the peninsula, you simply just keep heading for the coast towards Salalah, which my father has described as the closest point to paradise on earth. That, is why for the final time, I’d go there.
Rob:
Rob is another one of our technicians, who is probably the worlds foremost authority on Triumph TR6 fuel pumps, but away from that was a very accomplished grass track racer back in the day while also lending his talents to stock cars/banger racing and anything which you drive off road and always with a bit of angle on near a wall – he also has an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage rallying. Formerly, Rob was one of the team at Classic Team Lotus helping to preserve and promote the fabulous collection of vintage race cars which have come out of Hethel. But, his choice goes back in time to what began that journey for him…
Car: MG Metro 6R4
Location: Brands Hatch, UK
Reason: Much like our technician Jon, Group B rallying was a pivotal era in the progression a young Rob would take with his tool box. He has a memory of being a young man and going to Brands Hatch to watch the Rallycross Grand Prix in, or around, 1988. Because of this, it has to be a 6R4 around the track for his last time out with the smell of fuel in his nostrils and nostalgia beating with full force in his heart.
Gordon:
Gordon, is Craig’s dad and a massive part of the company. His knowledge and experience is unparalleled. There probably isn’t a car in the last 40 years that he hasn’t either driven or at some point owned. With such a wealth of experience to draw from, and a completely open idea put to him his choice comes once again totally from the heart. Gordon would end his driving career, where it all began…
Car: Ford Anglia 105E
Location: Glemsford to Long Melford, Suffolk
Reason: This is the exact route the Gordon began his driving life with. He bought an Anglia 105E the night he passed his test, and drove it along that very route back home to Long Melford, from that fateful evening we all pretty much find ourselves today – what a way to finish…
