Group1 Unveils World’s First Potassium-Ion Battery in Cylindrical 18650 Format

Group1, an industry leader in advanced battery technology, has developed the world’s first Potassium-ion battery (KIB) in cylindrical 18650 form. This development looks to be a viable solution for sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective energy storage that doesn’t require the use of critical minerals like nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium. The KIB technology is designed to integrate smoothly into existing lithium-ion battery (LIB) manufacturing processes so could be widely used almost immediately.

A Milestone in Battery Technology

This new KIB battery was officially introduced at the 14th annual Beyond Lithium Conference at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. At this event, Group1 highlighted the evolution of the KIB from its early stages as a coin-cell to its current 18650 form, explaining the battery’s unique attributes and competitive advantages.

Advanced Materials and Performance

One of the key components of the KIB technology is Group1โ€™s flagship product, Kristoniteโ„ข, a specially engineered 4V cathode material in the Potassium Prussian White (KPW) class. Kristoniteโ„ข enables the KIB to deliver a superior balance of performance, safety, and cost compared to Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) LIBs and Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs).

Technical Specifications and Advantages

The 18650 form factor is one of the most widely adopted cell formats globally, known for its reliability and compatibility. Group1โ€™s KIBs use commercial graphite anodes, standard separators, and electrolyte formulations made from commercially available components. These batteries boast superior cycle life, excellent discharge capability, and operate at a nominal voltage of 3.7V. This first version of the product is performing better than expected. It has the ability to store a good amount of energyโ€”about 160 to 180 watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg). This energy storage level is similar to what you would find in standard lithium iron phosphate (LFP) lithium-ion batteries (LIB), which are common types of batteries used in things like electric vehicles and electronics.

Pros and Cons of the KIB Technology

Pros:

  1. Sustainability: KIBs eliminate the need for critical and often environmentally damaging minerals like nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium.
  2. Cost-Effectiveness: With simpler and more abundant materials, KIBs offer a more economical alternative to current battery technologies.
  3. Integration: KIBs are designed to fit seamlessly into existing LIB manufacturing processes, reducing the barriers for adoption by battery manufacturers.
  4. Performance: The KIBs demonstrate strong cycle life and discharge capabilities, making them suitable for demanding applications.
  5. Supply Chain Resilience: By reducing reliance on critical minerals, KIBs can help alleviate supply chain pressures and promote domestic manufacturing.

Cons:

  1. Energy Density: While KIBs have competitive energy densities, they are still on par with, rather than exceeding, current LFP-LIBs, which could limit their appeal in applications where maximum energy density is crucial.
  2. Market Adoption: As a new technology, KIBs may face hurdles in market adoption, particularly in an industry that is heavily invested in existing LIB technologies.

Group1 & KIB Moving Forward

By offering a sustainable, cost-effective, and high-performance alternative to traditional LIBs, KIBs could play a key role in the future of energy storage, particularly as the demand for environmentally friendly and resilient energy solutions continues to grow.

Glossary of Terms

  1. Potassium-ion Battery (KIB):
    • A type of rechargeable battery that uses potassium ions to store and release electrical energy. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, KIBs do not rely on critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium.
  2. 18650 Form Factor:
    • A cylindrical battery size (18 mm in diameter and 65 mm in length) that is widely used in various applications, including laptops, electric vehicles, and power tools. The 18650 form is a standard size for lithium-ion batteries, known for its reliability and widespread adoption.
  3. Lithium-ion Battery (LIB):
    • A type of rechargeable battery that is commonly used in portable electronics and electric vehicles. LIBs store energy through the movement of lithium ions between the anode and cathode during charging and discharging.
  4. Potassium Prussian White (KPW):
    • A class of cathode material used in potassium-ion batteries. KPW provides a stable structure for potassium ions to move during the charge and discharge cycles, contributing to the battery’s overall performance.
  5. Kristoniteโ„ข:
    • A proprietary 4V cathode material developed by Group1 for use in potassium-ion batteries. Kristoniteโ„ข enhances the battery’s balance of performance, safety, and cost compared to other battery technologies.
  6. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4 or LFP):
    • A type of lithium-ion battery known for its safety, long cycle life, and stable chemical composition. LFP batteries are commonly used in electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
  7. Sodium-ion Batteries (NIBs):
    • A type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions to store and release energy. NIBs are an alternative to lithium-ion batteries and are considered for applications where cost and availability of materials are critical factors.
  8. Cycle Life:
    • The number of complete charge and discharge cycles a battery can undergo before its capacity falls below a certain percentage of its original capacity. A higher cycle life indicates a longer-lasting battery.
  9. Discharge Capability:
    • The ability of a battery to release stored energy over a period of time. Batteries with strong discharge capabilities can deliver energy quickly and efficiently, which is important for high-demand applications.
  10. Nominal Voltage:
    • The average voltage at which a battery operates during its discharge cycle. For the KIB, the nominal voltage is 3.7V, which is typical for many lithium-ion batteries as well.
  11. Watt-hours per kilogram (Wh/kg):
    • A measure of energy density in batteries, indicating how much energy a battery can store relative to its weight. Higher Wh/kg values are desirable for applications where weight is a critical factor, such as in electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz Breaks New Ground with Level 4 Automated Driving in Beijing

Mercedes-Benz has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first international car manufacturer to receive approval for Level 4 automated driving tests on urban roads and highways in Beijing. This marks a crucial step in the company’s ongoing efforts to advance autonomous driving technology for privately owned vehicles worldwide.

The approval allows Mercedes-Benz to test advanced software and hardware for automated driving, pushing the boundaries of what vehicles can achieve independently. This Level 4 testing builds on previous achievements, including the companyโ€™s successful approval for Level 3 testing in Beijing at the end of 2023.

An Old Friend Returns

We have recently welcomed an old friend in the form of our 1955 Austin-Healey 100 back into the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

Fiat Brakes

Steve has reconditioned the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and relined the brake shoes of our 1952 Fiat 1900A.

The old cylinders were leaking and had contaminated the shoes with brake fluid.

Steve also removed the old fuel pump blanket plate and gasket as it was leaking before fabricating a new one.

Ferrari Repairs

Technician Jonn has continued his work on our 1979 Ferrari 400 GT. Here are his notes:

Continue repairs. Fit new boot cable and handle. Thread cable through outer and measure. Remove inner cable and handle and compare to old cable. New cable approx 3 foot shorter so will have to join cable in boot to activate lock release. Cut old outer to length and retread inner cable. Make bracket to mount rear portion of cable. Drill out and mock up to check.

Cable hard to pull and bracket not strong enough. Remake bracket from thicker steel and mount in place. Rear cable section is a solid able and has kinks in inner so this may be reason for stiff operation. Adjust length of new cable.

SS100 King Pins

Jonn has been working on our 1939 Jaguar SS100. He removed the front wheels and brakes in order to gain access to the kingpins.

He removed the hubs and noticed that there was shim material in the crossmemeber where the kingpins go through.

He removed the cross member and sent it off to be machined and new kingpins made.

Number Plate Light

Jonn has been investigating why the rear number plate light on our 1963 Fiat 500 was not working. He found that a small wire had been twisted around a screw as an earth. Jonn removed the light, made an earth wire, and attached it to the bulb holder.

Once everything was refitted, it all worked perfectly.

Recently, after around 4 years of trading, Limited100 got an order from their 400th customer.

Our Boxster Returns

We recently welcomed an old friend back into the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in the form of our 2013 Porsche Boxster.

This time though, it’s not in for any work, it’s back so it can soon go live on the Bridge Classic Cars Competitions website.

RM Sothebyโ€™s to Reveal the Legendary Rudi Klein Collection in October 2024

Later this year, the world will finally get to see one of the most secretive and mysterious car collections ever to exist –The Rudi Klein Collection.

The collection, which has only been rumoured to exist and is covered in mystery and myth, will come to auction in October 2024 in Los Angeles with RM Sotheby’s. The auction will mark the first time the public will have access to what has been dubbed โ€œThe Junkyard,โ€ an incredible group of rare and iconic vehicles hidden away for decades.


Rudi Klein

Rudi Klein, a German immigrant who initially built his career as a butcher, founded his scrapyard business, Porsche Foreign Auto, in 1967. Over the course of 40 years, Klein quietly amassed an extraordinary collection of European classics, including ultra-rare models from manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini. This collection, which has been the subject of much speculation and rumour within the Southern California car community, remained untouched and hidden from the public eye since Kleinโ€™s passing in 2001.

The Auction

The upcoming auction in October 2024 will offer a rare opportunity to own a piece of this legendary collection. Among the highlights is one of the rarest Mercedes-Benz models ever produced: the 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500 K โ€˜Caracciolaโ€™ Special Coupe. Also featured are a long-lost 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL โ€˜Alloyโ€™ Gullwing and the 1967 Iso Grifo A3/L Spider Prototype, both of which have been sought after by collectors for years.

The Junkyard: The Rudi Klein Collection

To be offered in a series of auctions, both live and online, in October 2024, early highlights of โ€˜The Junkyard: The Rudi Klein Collectionโ€™ include:

1935 Mercedes-Benz 500 K โ€˜Caracciolaโ€™ Special Coupe by Sindelfingen: One of the most famous pre-war Mercedes-Benz cars extant, this unique coupe is the only example of its kind, originally delivered to the legendary Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix driver, Rudolf Caracciola.

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL โ€˜Alloyโ€™ Gullwing: One of just 29 ‘Alloy’ Gullwings produced, this was the only example delivered in Blackโ€”and was once owned by legendary racing and Ferrari figure Luigi Chinetti. It is a unique example of the most sought-after of all 300 SLs, virtually unseen for decades.

1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster: Awaiting a well-deserved restoration, this 300 SL left the factory finished in Fire Engine Red over Cream interior and was equipped with factory Rudge-wheels, the most desirable configuration for an early Roadster.

1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster: Famed for its rakish design and historical significance, this is the only surviving 855, the ultimate Horch automobile. Boasting rich provenance, its fascinating past includes display in early California roadside museums, as well as being used for Hollywood publicity photographs in the 1950s.

1967 Iso Grifo A3/L Spider Prototype by Bertone: The only factory-built Grifo convertible, used for factory publicity photographs, the unique A3/L Spider was acquired by Rudi Klein many years ago from renowned enthusiast and Hollywood producer, Greg Garrison.

1961 Porsche 356 B 1600 โ€˜Twin-Grilleโ€™ Roadster by dโ€™Ieteren: A classic model known for its distinctive design and performance, in the sought-after ‘Twin-Grille’ configurationโ€”in remarkable original condition, and believed to have fewer than 600 actual miles.

Door Adjustment

During the pre-delivery inspection of our 1954 Daimler Conquest Roadster, Jonn noticed an issue with the driver’s door. Here are his notes on the repair:

Attend to report that drivers door will occasionally open whilst driving. Found catch spring not functioning to maintain pressure on catch. Strip and remove door panel.,found handle mechanism fitted upside down. Remove handle and catch assembly. Fit spring to catch to maintain pressure on catch. Refit to door and test. Ok now and handle sits and operates same as passengers door. Clean and apply double side tape to door panel and refit. Refit handle and test. Adjust striker and lubricate, ok. Remove and restick both front door pocket lining material.

Tony recently collected the wheels for our 1956 Jensen 541 from Wheelworx and brought them back to the workshop.

Local News – Ed Sheeran Buys Minority Stake In Ipswich Town Football Club

Yesterday, our local football club, Ipswich Town, announced that Ed Sheeran has become a minority shareholder in the Football Club. This comes as the 2024/2025 season is about to begin – the team’s first Premier League season since 2002, following back-to-back promotions from League One.

A lifelong supporter of the Club and the front-of-shirt sponsor for both the Menโ€™s and Womenโ€™s teams since 2021, Ed has acquired a 1.4% stake through Gamechanger 20 Ltd.

As part of this agreement, Ed will have access to a personalised executive box at Portman Road stadium for the long term, starting with the 2024/25 season.

It is worth noting that this is a passive and minority investment, and Ed will not be joining the Football Club’s board.

Ed Sheeran said:

โ€œI am really excited to have bought a small percentage of my hometown football club.

Itโ€™s any football fanโ€™s dream to be an owner of the club they support, and I feel so grateful for this opportunity.โ€ฏ 

I have lived in Suffolk since I was three years old and, while I travel the world and sometimes feel like an outsider in big cities, Suffolk and Ipswich have always made me feel part of the community and protected.โ€ฏ

Itโ€™s such a joy to be a fan of Ipswich Town. There are ups and downs but football is all about taking the highs and the lows. Vanden Plas Jobs

Jonn has been working hard to get our 1981 Austin Vanden Plas ready to be delivered to its lucky new owner. Here are his notes:

Remove rear wheels. Remove rear wheel bearings and drums. Strip and remove brake shoes and cylinders. Remove flexi hoses and fit new hoses. Manufacture barke pipes from glexis to wheel cylinders. Clean re usable components. Clean and lubricate backplates. Fit new wheel cylinders and connect. Fit new shoes and secure. Remove rear seatbase and de adjust handbrake cable. Clean and delip drums. Fit drums and adjust wheel bearings.

Bleed rear brakes. Adjust rear shoes. Adjust handbrake cable. Refit rear wheels.

Torque wheels and refit wheel trims. Top up brake fluid. Refit rear seat base. Carry out pdi. Resecure front grill

Strip and remove rear axle support mounts for welding.

Strip and remove nearside rear axle mount for welding. Mount had completely separated

To overcome the problem with the new axle mounts rubber bushes collapsing it was decided to solid mount the axle ends. First the rubber is removed and then a steel plate of the same thickness is cut. The original mounting are then welded to the steel packer to create a solid mount which will locate the axle more securely.

Refit modified rear axle mounting brackets. Align and secure. Refit rear wheels and torque up. Refit wheel trims. Using suspension pump lower suspension at rear. (Hydrogas not hydrolastic). Lower by approx 2 inches. Remove lift pump again as still has a leak. Clean and inspect all mating surfaces and spacer block. All appear fine. Make 2 x new gaskets and refit using derko sealer. Secure and leave to go off.

MG Cyberster Named ‘Best Sports Car’ at 2024 Best Cars of the Year Awards

This recognition means that the Cyberster will be celebrated at The British Motor Show, running from 15th -18th August, where it will be displayed on the Best Cars of the Year stand.

The international judging panel commended the MG Cyberster for its groundbreaking design, strong sustainability focus, and impressive electric performance. These qualities set it apart as a clear winner in its category.

The Cyberster also gained attention for its high level of comfort and its state-of-the-art interior, which features a wrap-around three-screen cockpit, creating a modern and immersive driving experience that puts the driver at the heart of the action.


Available in both single and dual motor configurations, the Cyberster delivers exceptional performance. The dual motor Cyberster GT, for example, boasts an impressive 503PS (375kW) and 725Nm (535 lb ft) of torque.

With multiple driving modes, the Cyberster offers a tailored driving experienceโ€”from relaxed motorway cruising in Comfort mode to a more exciting drive with enhanced power in Sport or Supersport mode. The all-wheel-drive GT accelerates from 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds, making it MGโ€™s fastest production car to date.

Almost Ready For The Rebuild

With the new parts starting to arrive, it is almost time to begin the rebuild of the engine of our 1964 Mercedes 230SL.

The fuel injection pump and injectors have been rebuilt and are ready to be refitted. The camshaft is currently at Kent Cams where the camshaft is being reprofiled to the original Mercedes specification. This is because automatic gearboxes don’t respond well to uprating.

The camshaft and new cam fingers should be ready next week when more progress can be made.

Ford Supervan Celebrated On Transit Day

A rebuild of the legendary Supervan took the spotlight at Ford’s โ€˜Transit Dayโ€™ celebration, held at the Dunton Technical Centre, known as the Home of Transit, as the countdown to its 60th anniversary begins.

Accompanied by the fan-favourite Supervan 3 and the race-winning, all-electric Supervan 4.2, Transit Day marks the first time all three generations of Supervan have appeared together.


The Original

The original Supervan, introduced to the public in 1971, was powered by a V8 engine from a GT40 and built on a mid-engine Cooper Monaco chassis, all housed within a Transit body. Now, over fifty years later, a new Supervan has been rebuilt from the ground up using original components by Andy Browne, a former Ford engineering apprentice. Browne’s dedicated restoration pays tribute to the Supervanโ€™s unique legacy and his late friend, Terry Drury.

Andy said โ€œTerry was one of lifeโ€™s amazing characters, he built the original van in three to four months, off the back of an orange Transit built by Ford apprentices, who stuck a seven-litre Ford Galaxie engine in it. Terry was well-known to Ford and, with the help of some spare GT40 parts and funding from the Ford Truck sales division, it was the billboard of all billboards.โ€

After the Supervan campaign ended, the Terry Drury Racing team dismantled the vehicle, including its powertrain. The body, along with other remnants, changed hands several times before eventually reaching Andy. Determined to revive the Supervan, he set out to bring it back to life.

He said “I bought Supervan in late 1973 for ยฃ500. But there was nothing; all it had was a shell and four wheels. Nothing else. Luckily, I had access to machine shops so I could produce parts, and bought a transaxle off Terry for another ยฃ500. Back then, I was a Ford apprentice on five pounds a week!”

Andy needed to register, tax, and insure Supervan before it could be driven. This required convincing the relevant authorities that his Transit van was equipped with a 4.7-litre V8 engine and that a 19-year-old apprentice was its registered owner and driver. He said, โ€œI spoke to a specialist insurer and you can guess how much my premium wasโ€ฆโ€

The Disappearance

As life, family, and homeownership took priority, Andy eventually sold Supervan. By the time Ford unveiled Supervan 2 in 1985, the original had passed through multiple owners after Andy, and its whereabouts became a mystery.

Rumors of Supervanโ€™s existence persisted, with fans worldwide trying to track down the original. Even years after selling it, Andy would receive calls from strangers asking if the van theyโ€™d found was the authentic Supervan. Due to the modifications he made during his ownership, such as fitting a different exhaust system and altering parts of the body around the sills, Andy knew exactly what to look for.

Years later, with his children grown and more time and resources at his disposal, Andy decided to revisit Supervan in honour of the late friends and colleagues who played a significant role in his journey with the iconic vehicle.

The Return

Andy said โ€œOriginally, I wanted to build a replica. Then one day I got a call and somebody said to me they thought they knew where the remains of Supervan were. Iโ€™ve lost count, but this must have been at least the twentieth time, easily. I went to see these remains, ran my hand under the sills and knew that it was the van that Iโ€™d owned. It wasnโ€™t even a van at all โ€“ just a floor pan and a bit of bulkhead, and some parts of a chassis that had been cut.โ€

The plan quickly changed. Instead of building a replica Supervan, Andy purchased the original remains and began a full restoration using authentic components.

Fast forward to 2024, and Andy is nearing the completion of his tribute to Terry and the legacy that sparked global admiration for the iconic Supervan. The name has returned to the spotlight following Supervan 4.2’s victory in the “Race to the Clouds” at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in November 2023, and its win in the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed Timed Shootout in July.


60 Years In 2025

The Ford Transit celebrates its 60th birthday on 9th August 2025 โ€“ the day the first example rolled off the production line – and to mark the occasion, surrounded by the latest and greatest Transit vehicles across six decades, the 365-day countdown began at this yearโ€™s Transit Day. Transit will also enter its 58th year as the UKโ€™s best-selling commercial vehicle.

Fiat 500 Engine Back In

Jonn has been refitting the engine to our 1963 Fiat 500. Here are his notes:

Get car on ramp. Prepare for refitting engine. Clean engine bay and place engine at rear ready for installation.

With assistance refit engine to car. Bolt up gearbox mountings. Route cables and wires and start making connections. Refit rear member bumper and boot lid. Secure rear engine mount. Raise in air and reconnect driveshafts and access starter cable.connect and set/adjust cables to, choke, throttle, starter and clutch. Check choke operation and throttle operation, ok. Adjust clutch cable and starter cable. Refill with oil. Connect battery and disconnect ht coil lead. Crank engine over for approx 1 min. Reconnect ht lead and start car. 1st flick of key. Allow to idle for a few minsand switchnoff. Check and top up oil. Adjust timing tom10btdc and lock distributor. Take outside run and and carry out road test. Stop and adjust clutch a bit more and return to workshop.

Visually check for leaks, ok. Carry out quick nut and bolt check and recheck oil level, ok. Car starts ok every time so not necessary to fit electric fuel pump at this stage. Let customer comeand drive and let me know if all ok.

Surge in Bug Population Due to Wet, Warm Weather Increases Risk of Vehicle Damage

Experts predict that the rise in wet and warm weather conditions is fueling a significant increase in the UKโ€™s bug population. This, in turn, is leading to a notable rise in โ€˜bug splatsโ€™ on vehicles, posing potential damage to car paintwork.


While the wet start to summer in 2024 has left many of us feeling underwhelmed, the UKโ€™s bug population is thriving. The moist conditions have led to a population surge that is expected to last well into the autumn, bringing an inevitable increase in โ€˜bug splatsโ€™ on cars during peak holiday travel.

Autoglym, the UKโ€™s leading car care brand, is warning drivers to the potential harm these insect remains can cause if not promptly addressed. As temperatures fluctuate, the clearcoat lacquer that protects a vehicleโ€™s paintwork can soften around bug residues during the heat and harden when cooled, leading to a phenomenon known as โ€˜etching.โ€™ This process can create an uneven surface, distorting light and diminishing the vehicle’s glossy finish. Once etching occurs, it is challenging to restore the surface to its original smoothness without using a machine polisher.

Autoglymโ€™s UK-based laboratory team explains that bug decomposition releases fatty acids and enzymes that can severely damage sensitive exterior surfaces, including gloss-black plastic trim. This makes the prompt removal of insect remains crucial in preserving the vehicleโ€™s appearance and preventing lasting damage.

Drivers are advised to exercise caution when choosing insect removal products. Many such products contain solvents that can harm plastic trim, which is often found on the front of vehicles where insect residues accumulate. To address this, Autoglymโ€™s products are formulated to be safe for use on all vehicle surfaces, ensuring effective protection without the risk of damage.

Autoglym recommends that motorists protect their paintwork with appropriate products and act quickly to remove bug residues, helping to maintain their vehicleโ€™s appearance and value during this particularly challenging season for car maintenance.

John Anderson, Senior Technologist at Autoglym, explains: โ€œWith a surge in the UKโ€™s insect population, we strongly recommend drivers prepare their vehicles with a layer of protection and remove any insect splatter as quickly as possible โ€“ ideally when the residues are cool and damp. Cleaning early in the day or the evening when bug splats are softer will help to make the job of cleaning and removing them easier, while also being safer on paintwork.โ€

UKโ€™s Most Ideal Holiday Driving Companions

Recent research has identified the celebrities British people would most like to accompany them on a UK holiday road trip. Topping the list of preferred drivers is Jeremy Clarkson, with TV personalities, sports stars, and even a royal figure making the cut as well.

The survey, commissioned by Kwik Fit, the UKโ€™s leading automotive servicing and repair company, also delved into who Brits would most like to have as passengers for an enjoyable journey. Comedian Peter Kay, star of the TV sitcom Car Share, emerged as the top choice, followed by other TV favourites known for their storytelling abilities – Stephen Fry and Bob Mortimer.

While Jeremy Clarkson is the unanimous choice for both men and women as the ideal driver, the rest of the top five show some variation. Both genders included David Beckham and Lewis Hamilton in their selections, but their remaining choices differ. Men favoured comic actor and car enthusiast Rowan Atkinson and Clarksonโ€™s long-time co-presenter James May, while women leaned towards style and sophistication, choosing James Bond star Daniel Craig and Princess Anne.

Notably, the research highlighted regional differences in preferences. In Scotland, for example, the excitement of the journey is important, with actor Jason Statham, known for his action-packed driving roles, being the top pick as a driver. โ€œWhile it might be nice to imagine handing over driving duties to a celebrity, the reality for most of us holiday motorists is that we are ultimately responsible for the happiness of our passengers.  As well as making sure theyโ€™ve got the right audiobooks and music downloaded, drivers mustnโ€™t forget to make all the pre-travel checks on their car. The one sure fire way to remove any happiness from a holiday journey is to end up stranded on the hard shoulder.โ€

Corvette Brakes

Here are Jonn’s notes relating to his work on one of our new arrivals – a 1976 Chevrolet Corvette:

Inspect brake system. Carry out full manual bleed of system. Still,think air is trapped in system. Attempt to pressure bleed but unable to seal reservoir. Bleed full system from master cylinder through to each wheel in order. Light still comes on occasionally and pressure at proportion valve seems unequal across the two circuits when unions undone and pedal,pressure applied, making me think there is still air trapped in system.

Looking into why the brake warning light was flashing on. After checking and bleed the brakes we found the new switch in the pressure senor valve was faulty. Also a few things we found which will require attention in the future. A bump stop becoming delamination and the radiator cross member show signs of corrosion.

Clamp off 3 wheels and bleed 4th. Repeat process for all wheels. Pedal good but light still illuminates when pedal pressed. Clamp off both fronts and retry. Light still coming on. Clamp off rears and try to see which circuit has the lower pressure. But light still coming on. Check old switch from old valve. Switch works like a reverse lightbswitch, as 8n when plunger pressed in switch then has continuity to earth, illuminating light on dash. Reiver new switch from new valve and found switch already has continuity without pressing in plunger. Wobble plunger and switch loses continuity. Fit old switch into new valveand test. Hey presto, light no longer illuminates when pedal pressed. Top up fluid. Refit wheels and torque up to 108nm. Clean area and have quick final look over ( see attached advisories). Carry out road test, all ok. Brakes fine and light not illuminating. ADVISE, All wheels show signs of wear where wheel nuts contact. Handbrake has excessive travel. Drivers side rear bumper stop hanging off. Wire to drivers side rear routed poorly above rear shock absorber. Radiator mount/ ember corroded and holed. Plate beneath rear diff insecure and rattles.
