Volvo Cars has officially started production of its new fully electric EX60, with the first customer deliveries due to begin in early summer. Built at Volvo’s Torslanda plant just outside Gothenburg, Sweden, the EX60 is a new fully electric mid-size SUV, but it is also the first fully electric Volvo to be designed, developed, and built in Sweden.
Production of the EX60 is also expected to have a wider impact beyond the company itself. With Volvo’s long-term volume ambitions for the model, the EX60 has the potential to become one of Sweden’s biggest export products by value, helping support both the national economy and the wider Western Sweden region’s position as a major automotive hub.
“Today is an important milestone for our company and for Sweden as a whole, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars. We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, making sure this game-changing car will be a profitable growth driver in the coming years.”
Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars CEO
Volvo had already announced last month that it would increase EX60 production volumes for 2026 following strong early demand. Interest in the new SUV has been particularly high in markets such as Sweden and Germany, while retail orders across almost all major European markets have come in well above the company’s internal expectations.
Because of that strong order intake, and with order books for the US and Asian markets set to open later this spring, Volvo has decided to build even more EX60s this year. Part of that plan could see the Torslanda plant stay open for an extra week this summer, which would be a first in the site’s history.
When the EX60 was revealed in January, it was met with huge praise and has clearly been positioned as a very important car for Volvo’s electric future. It offers a claimed range of up to 503 miles, can charge from 10% to 80% in 16 minutes, and is priced in line with Volvo’s best-selling XC60 plug-in hybrid.
To prepare for EX60 production, Volvo has made major upgrades to its Torslanda facility in recent years. The site now includes mega casting capabilities, a new battery assembly plant, and fully refurbished paint and final assembly shops.
