The Story of our 2002 Ford Thunderbird

Back in 2002, our Thunderbird left Ford’s Wixom plant in Michigan. This was the first year of the “new” Thunderbird, which Ford launched in an attempt to reconnect with its identity from the 1950s.

It was ordered in Evening Black with a Black interior and had the 3.9-litre V8. This was the Jaguar-derived unit Ford was using at the time and was paired with a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

At purchase, it cost its first owner $39,290 (equivalent to approximately £55,000 in today’s money). It had the factory hardtop and several premium add-ons such as chrome wheels, traction control, and the quirky portholes at the rear.

It All Began in New Canaan, Connecticut

This specific car was sold through Griffin Ford in New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. What I love about this point is that the car still has the salesperson’s business card with it. Gary (salesperson) has now become a constant part of this car’s history. The dealership closed down in 2009, so it’s a nice little nostalgic feature of the history file.

By 2009, our Thunderbird had made its way to the UK. We know this because there’s a service stamp from a garage in Norfolk at 21,175 miles.

Over the next 15+ years, the car seems to have lived a very quiet life with mileage creeping up to only about 43,000 miles. Averaging around 1500 miles a year, our Thunderbird seems to have been more of a weekend car instead of a daily.

Recently

The car drops off the radar to some extent after 2019 until 2024. At this point, it comes into our possession here at Bridge Classic Cars and undergoes a full recommission and various repair and maintenance tasks are completed.

Importantly, our Thunderbird has a full HMRC NOVA record, meaning it has been correctly declared and is completely set up for UK life.

Current Condition

It may have travelled from one country to another, but our Thunderbird is still very suited to UK roads. It drives as you want it to, and having been in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in recent times, it’s in a very usable condition. It could quite comfortably be a daily for someone.

2002 Ford Thunderbird Timeline

Ford Thunderbirds like this aren’t particularly rare. However, ours is a bit more than your “standard” Thunderbird, as it has a life and timeline that is highly traceable.

It was built in Michigan in 2002 before being sold in Connecticut soon after. It lived the first few years of its life in America before making its way to the UK around 2009. It was then lightly used for over a decade before being recommissioned by Bridge Classic Cars from 2024 onwards.

Our car also has a decent amount of original documentation with it too. It has its original manuals and book packs, US registration documents, dealer paperwork, service book, HMRC NOVA paperwork, and various other bits of paperwork from throughout its life.

Is Our Ford Thunderbird Special?

In simple terms, no, not particularly. However, the 2002 Thunderbird wasn’t built to be the fastest, most exciting, or most powerful car. It was built to be slightly nostalgic and to be enjoyed.

Because of that, a lot of them lived easy lives. Some got neglected, and some got messed with. The better examples are the ones that stayed original, haven’t been overused, and still have a lot of their history with them. That’s exactly where our Thunderbird fits. It has low mileage, it has a good amount of its original documentation, it has a traceable history, and it is still a treat to drive.

Our 2002 Ford Thunderbird isn’t special, but it is rare to find a car that has travelled from country to country, like this one, and still has so much of its history intact.
