The Story Of Our 1987 Maserati Biturbo

First registered on 24th April 1987, D125 SGN is a UK-supplied Maserati Biturbo Coupé finished in red and powered by the desirable 2.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6. Unlike the 2-litre cars sold in Italy, UK-market Biturbos were fitted with the larger 2,491cc engine, producing improved grand touring performance.

Our Birurbo still has its original registration, D125 SGN, and matching chassis number, ZAM331B25HB180043, confirming it as a factory-built export model. One of the most interesting parts of this story, though, is how little the car has been used throughout its life. Some of the original MOT certificates with the car show that in July 1993, it had been driven just 5,682 miles. Two years later, in July 1995, the mileage had gone up to 11,114 miles.

The history file also shows a change of keeper in July 1995, with the vehicle passing from Gatley Headley Garage Ltd in Cheshire into private ownership. A period V5 registration document confirms this transfer while also verifying the car’s original specification, including its 2.5-litre engine, red paintwork and Biturbo Coupé designation.

At this point, our Biturbo’s life comes to something of a halt. Everything suggests that shortly after its 1995 MOT, it was taken off the road and put into storage.

For almost three decades, our Maserati Biturbo remained locked away, preserving its originality in a way that very few Biturbos have managed. A lot of examples were driven extensively, modified or succumbed to the reliability issues that affected neglected cars during the 1990s and early 2000s. This one not only survived but is now likely to be one of the best surviving examples you’ll find.

In 2022, the car began the next chapter of its life when it arrived here at Bridge Classic Cars, and a restoration began. The restoration has focused on preserving as much originality as possible while returning the car to reliable road-going condition. Mechanical components have been rebuilt or refurbished, the braking system has been overhauled, the engine bay has been recommissioned, and the car now looks better than ever!

Our Biturbo is now becoming increasingly rare in the classic Maserati world as it is an exceptionally original, UK-supplied Biturbo with documented low mileage, matching factory identity, original registration and a clear, well-documented history. As values of well-preserved 1980s performance cars continue to rise, originality continues to be important. With just over 11,000 miles covered before entering long-term storage followed by restoration by Bridge Classic Cars, the next owner is going to be a very lucky person!
