For many years, Ferrari was known for its two-seater cars. It wasn’t until 1961 that the brand released its four-seater in the form of the 250GT 2+2. This model was the first of several to follow with the larger and more spacious 365GT4 2+2 in 1972 and its successor, the 400GT, in 1976. During this time, all Ferraris were expensive, low-production vehicles, constructed using increasingly intricate tubular chassis frames and featured hand-crafted bodywork styled by Pininfarina and produced at the Scaglietti coachbuilding facility in Modena.
Ferrari’s approach to chassis development at the time meant that the 400GT retained clear links to the designs of the 1960s. However, it featured modern upgrades such as all-independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. In 1976, the 400GT introduced a larger 4823cc V12 and it also became the first Ferrari to offer an optional automatic gearbox (like this one).
Between 1976 and 1979, only 502 examples of the 400GT were built, with only 123 right-hand-drive units supplied to the UK. Our 1979 Ferrari 400GT is one of these rare UK-supplied, right-hand-drive examples. Finished in Blue Monaco Metallic with Magnolia and Blue leather upholstery, it was factory-fitted with the optional automatic gearbox and has been with its previous owner since 2004. It has covered just under 84,000 miles, with less than 1,000 miles added in the last 13 years!
