According to new research from eBay, 11% of drivers admit they have never checked the condition of their wiper blades, despite their important role in maintaining visibility and passing an MOT.

Worryingly, the study seems to show a big lack of awareness, with one in five drivers (20%) unaware that faulty wiper blades could lead to an MOT failure. Among them, Gen Z drivers (aged 18-24) were the least informed, with 45% not realising that wipers are part of the test. This age group also showed the lowest confidence in identifying worn-out blades.

When it comes to replacing wipers, nearly a third (31%) of drivers are unsure how to do it themselves, and 42% admitted they wouldn’t feel confident attempting the task. Many drivers only address the issue when their car goes in for an MOT or service, with 23% relying on those occasions to check their blades.

“A car’s windscreen wipers are critical when it comes to maintaining visibility in wet weather, yet the condition of wiper blades often goes under the radar as a potential MOT failure item. It’s important for drivers to understand what to look for when they become damaged or worn so they can replace them cost effectively, rather than face the inconvenience of a failed MOT.”
