A Harley-Davidson Sportster commissioned and owned from new by football legend Kevin Keegan will be for sale with H&H Classics in July.
The 1990 Harley-Davidson XLH 1200 Sportster was originally purchased by Keegan from a Harley-Davidson dealership in Newcastle before being customised in the black-and-white Newcastle United F.C.-livery.
Kevin Keegan is a two-time Ballon d’Or winner in 1978 and 1979, and achieved big success with Liverpool and Hamburger SV, but it was at Newcastle United where he became something of a club legend. After helping the club return to the Premier League as a player, he later repeated that success as manager in the 1990s.
The Sportster itself has had an equally interesting life. During its early years, it formed part of a public display at the Newcastle Breweries Museum, which was situated opposite St James’ Park and sponsored Newcastle United at the time. Following its time on display, the bike was installed on a purpose-built plinth in Keegan’s home office.
Based on a Harley-Davidson XLH 1200 Sportster, the motorcycle features a number of subtle custom modifications, including drag handlebars, billet levers and switchgear, a single saddle, and a shortened rear mudguard. Earlier this year, it was recommissioned by Moto Restoration and fitted with new tyres in preparation for sale.
The bike is being offered with no reserve and will be supplied with a signed photograph of Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park, a letter of provenance, and a current V5C registration document.
It will be auctioned by H&H Classics at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on 22nd July. In recognition of Keegan’s recent stage four cancer diagnosis, H&H Classics has also confirmed that a percentage of the sale proceeds will be donated to Cancer Research UK.
