Vauxhall Begins UK Trials of Hydrogen-Powered Vivaro Van

Vauxhall has started UK customer trials for its hydrogen-powered van, the Vivaro HYDROGEN. Over the next few months, a range of companies, including those with some of the largest fleets in the country, will be involved in these trials. This is all in preparation for the launch of the Movano HYDROGEN, which will be Vauxhall’s largest light commercial vehicle, in 2025.

The Vivaro HYDROGEN is new to the UK but it’s already available in left-hand drive markets under Vauxhall’s sister brand – Opel. This means that it is the first commercially produced hydrogen-powered van available for sale.

Hydrogen Power

The Vivaro HYDROGEN is based on Vauxhall’s all-electric Vivaro Electric, but with a hydrogen fuel cell system. It has a 45kW fuel cell and a 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery giving it a driving range of 249 miles (WLTP standard). Its hydrogen fuel tanks, which are located under the floor, can be refilled in just five minutes, which isn’t too dissimilar to the time needed to refuel traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

The 10.5kWh battery has some added benefits too, such as providing extra power during acceleration and when starting the vehicle. It also allows the fuel cell to run at optimal conditions and enables regenerative braking, which means that the braking energy is converted back into electricity to recharge the battery.

Just in case hydrogen refuelling stations are hard to come by, the van also has a plug-in feature, which gives a range of up to 31 miles of pure electric driving.

Space and Functionality

As the Vivaro HYDROGEN has an advanced hydrogen system, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking this has an impact on space. However, it actually offers up to 6.1 cubic metres of cargo volume and a maximum payload of 1,000 kg. This matches its combustion engine counterparts pretty much exactly.

“As the UK’s best-selling electric van manufacturer for the past three years, we are already leading the way in electrifying Britain’s businesses. With a 311-mile range, zero-emissions-in-use and quick refuelling, the Movano HYDROGEN will provide fleets with another sustainable option alongside our full line-up of battery electric vans. I look forward to hearing feedback from fleet operators taking part in the trial ahead of the commercial launch of Movano HYDROGEN later this year.”

James Taylor, Managing Director, Vauxhall

Movano HYDROGEN

Following the Vivaro trials, Vauxhall will be launching the Movano HYDROGEN in 2025. This will be its largest hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicle with the order books opening later this year. This will have an even greater range of up to 311 miles (WLTP) and the same quick refuelling time of under five minutes.

The Movano HYDROGEN will also feature a 110kW (150hp) electric motor and 410 Newton metres of torque. Like the Vivaro, it will also come with a lithium-ion battery for additional power during starts and acceleration, as well as the ability to recapture braking energy.

The Future of Hydrogen Power

The UK trial of a hydrogen-powered van is a good indication that Vauxhall is doing its bit to help grow the hydrogen vehicle market.

The Vivaro HYDROGEN and the Movano HYDROGEN could significantly reduce carbon emissions and, as their performance is comparable to traditional vehicles, there is a real chance that these two vans could help shape the future of commercial transport.

Vauxhall-Opel and its parent company Stellantis have over 20 years of expertise in hydrogen fuel cell technology. To further support hydrogen adoption, Vauxhall teamed up with UK-based company Ryze Hydrogen earlier this year with the aim of creating hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for fleet operators, enabling businesses to power their hydrogen vehicles either at on-site refuelling stations or dedicated facilities.

No More Coal

The UK is officially turning its back on coal-powered electricity after 142 years, as the final active coal plant in Ratcliffe-on-Soar shut down for the final time this week.

It’s hard to put into words how big of a deal this is; as coal was the foundation of the Industrial Revolution that changed the country and so many industries forever thanks to the electrical power it generated. Now though, as the UK (and the rest of the world) look to a greener and more sustainable future, renewable energy is taking over. In fact, more than 50% of the UK’s electricity is currently provided by renewable sources.

It’s something of a full circle moment in some ways as not only did the UK lead the way into fossil fuel powered industry, but it now leads the way out of fossil fuel usage and makes a big shift towards more environmentally friendly processes.

I’m surrounded by classic cars every day so I have a deep respect for the historical importance of things. That’s why I feel like this is something of a moment in the history of the UK that people will look back on as the time when the fossil fuel era ended and the sustainability era began.

Right now, there’s a lot of focus on wind and solar power. However, there are still concerns about grid stability, especially on days with very little wind when solar energy can’t fill the gap in energy supply. This is where battery technology will play a key role. Innovations are underway, but the UK needs to invest in its own battery production and expertise to stay competitive and avoid gaps in power generation.

When it comes to classic cars, and the automotive industry as a whole, sustainability is becoming more and more apparent. While I’m sure we all know hardcore petrolheads who hate EVs and they want to hear the roar of a V8 as they drive but, with synthetic fuel, this could all still happen without the negative environmental impacts.

Other fuels such as hydrogen, water, and anything else that comes along will all play a part but, for now, the last coal plant shutting down in the UK is a clear sign of the country’s commitment to a greener future..

What do you think?

Couldn’t agree more Rob, can’t stop progress but there is a place for history as well. The main issue will be building infrastructure to support EV, is it really achievable? Until then the fossil burning internal combustion engine will be with us.
Will a mark one Tesla become a classic in 20 years time? Could argue the BMW i8 is already viewed as such?
The sound of a V8 should be captured and buried in a time capsule.

First Norton F1R Ever Produced

The first Norton F1R motorcycle to be produced and raced will be available to buy at an auction hosted by H&H Classics at the National Motorcycle Museum on Wednesday 30th October 2024. The bike is estimated to sell for between £52,000 and £56,000.

This 1990 Norton F1R is frame number one and was the first P55 (F1) model to leave Norton’s Shenstone factory on April 1st, 1990. Having been owned by a single individual since new, the bike holds significant historical and racing value and it was famously raced in Germany’s “Battle of the Twins” series.

Throughout its racing career, the bike underwent various modifications. Starting with minor tweaks like an upgraded exhaust and inlet tract, it later received a custom swinging arm, front forks, high-compression rotors, aero engine twin-plug trochoids, and Mikuni flat-slide carburettors.

A very cool point to note about this bike is that it was nicknamed “Nepomuk” by the Seifert family after a little dragon from a popular German children’s puppet show. This was due to its habit of shooting flames when decelerating into corners!

“Our auction at the end of October is an incredible opportunity to own an extremely rare slice of motorcycle history. We expect a lot of interest in this special Norton F1 which has seen competitive action and won a number of races. It also looks amazing and is instantly recognisable in its black livery. Style, power and performance…the Norton F1R is the total package and this particular model, which has been running recently, is a must have for any Norton aficionado.”

Mike Davis, motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics

WIN Our MG ZT

The 2003 MG ZT SE 260 V8 was an attention-grabber within MG Rover’s ZT range, as it was a performance-oriented saloon featuring a potent 4.6-litre V8 engine. This was very different from the rest of the ZT lineup, most of which were front-wheel drive with smaller, less powerful engines. The rear-wheel-drive configuration, paired with the V8, gives the ZT 260 a muscle-car-like personality while still maintaining MG’s British charm.

The engine in our ZT 260 is the same as you’d find in a Ford Mustang of the same era. It delivers 260 bhp and a very impressive 410 Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful saloons MG Rover ever produced.

Available to win now through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions.

British Motorists Are Terrible Drivers

A recent survey conducted by Isuzu UK has given us insight into how UK motorists view their own driving skills and, as it turns out, we are terrible! Well, that’s according to 15% of the drivers polled who admitted that they are bad drivers. To make things worse, 4% of drivers in the survey actually considered themselves a danger on the road!

Drivers in Cardiff, London, and Liverpool had the highest percentages of self-confessed bad drivers with 35%, 33%, and 31% of drivers in the cities owning up to their poor driving skills.

On the flip side to this, drivers in Stoke-on-Trent have the highest confidence in their driving abilities, as none admitted to being bad behind the wheel. Other cities like Nottingham (2%), Cambridge (3%), and Edinburgh (4%) also rated themselves highly in terms of driving safety.

The survey, which explored various factors contributing to these opinions, found that the challenges of modern roads play a significant role. Over half of drivers (54%) admitted they had been involved in an accident due to distractions, with 36% blaming overcrowded roads, and 32% wishing their vehicles had more advanced safety features.

Interestingly, 62% of those surveyed expressed a desire to improve their driving skills, with 61% believing they wouldn’t pass their driving test if they had to take it again. This concern is greater among drivers over the age of 60, where 63% doubt their ability to pass a modern driving test.

The study also highlighted that many drivers struggle with basic driving tasks. Around 38% find parallel parking difficult, while a third (32%) lack knowledge of car maintenance, such as checking tyre pressure or coolant levels. Other common struggles include parking in a bay (19%), driving at the speed limit (19%), and reversing around corners (17%).

“With over 50 million drivers in Great Britain, it is worrying to think that as many as 7.5 million consider themselves bad drivers. It’s clear from the research that UK motorists face many challenges on all journeys, from smaller roads, tight parking bays and even their own vehicle. With one in three saying that having a vehicle with all the mod cons like blind spot detection and attention monitoring sensors would help them to be a better driver.

Isuzu D-Max’s Advanced Driver Assist System takes pick-up truck safety to a whole new level thanks to rear cross traffic alert, lane departure prevention system and autonomous emergency braking so you’ll never have to worry behind the wheel again. This fantastic safety doesn’t happen by accident.”

George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK

Beyond their own skills, many drivers feel unsafe in their vehicles due to outdated technology. One-third of drivers in the survey said they wish their cars had modern features like blind spot detection and attention monitoring systems to help them drive more safely. 36% also said that driving a larger car would make them feel safer on the road.

The survey also found that men were more likely than women to admit they had been in an accident due to a lack of concentration (61% vs. 47%), and younger generations (the widely discussed Gen Z and Millennials) reported being on the receiving end of road rage more often than other groups (67%).

CITIES WITH THE WORST DRIVERS, ACCORDING TO BRITISH DRIVERS:

1.      Cardiff – 35%,
2.      London – 33%,
3.      Liverpool – 31%,
4.      Plymouth – 15%,
5.      Leeds – 12%,
6.      Birmingham – 9%,
7.      Leicester – 9%,
8.      Oxford – 9%,
9.      Sheffield – 8%,
10.     Brighton – 7%.

This research of 2,000 Britons was commissioned by Isuzu and conducted by Perspectus Global during March 2024.

Inspecting Our E-Type

In preparation for it to be won very soon through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions, Jonn got our 1970 Jaguar E-Type into the workshop and began its pre-delivery inspection. After taking a look at things with it on the floor, he raised it up on the ramp.

He inflated all of the tyres, greased all of the points, and slackened the rear driveshaft. Jonn then reconnected the sidelight switch and tested everything to make sure it was working as it should.

MG Midget Carbs And Exhaust

Rob completed his work on our 1966 MG Midget by looking at the carbs and exhaust. Once he had finished, the car was loaded into the trailer ready for Tony to deliver it back to its owner.

Preparing Our MGB For Delivery

The two Johns have been completing the preparations for our 1973 MGB Roadster to be delivered to its new owner very soon.

John replaced the heater valve and heater control cable before replacing the heater knob too. He also topped up the coolant before cleaning the connections to the rev counter.

Jonn carried out the pre-delivery inspection and made a note of a couple of small jobs he would like to do before signing the car off to be delivered.

Jensen 541R Rear Axle

Paul has been busy working on the rear axle of our 1960 Jensen 541R.

After stripping the old axle for parts, he prepped the removed parts for paint and plating.

Paul then went on to fit the rear axle and leaf springs as our 541R continues to make great progress.

McLaren W1

McLaren Automotive has just confirmed the successor to the now iconic F1 and P1…the McLaren W1.

The new car will be revealed on Sunday 6th October 2024 at 13:00 BST and, I imagine, it’s going to be something as eye-catching as you’d expect!

All we know so far is that the W1 name has been chosen to celebrate McLaren’s “World Championship mindset” which explains why the 6th of October has been selected as the official reveal – this is the 50th anniversary of McLaren winning its first Formula 1 Constructor’s Championship in the same year that Emerson Fittipaldi won the World Drivers’ Championship with McLaren.

Torque Show – Behind The Scenes

While filming episode 4 of the Bridge Classic Cars Torque Show, it seemed like a great opportunity to take some candid photos to show you how things work in putting a show like this together.

It may only be a 20 – 30-minute show that seems to run smoothly but, a lot of time and effort goes into making every single one. That being said, we always have fun and it’s a fantastic opportunity to talk to each other about all things automotive.

H&H Classics Best Of British Auction 2024

On Wednesday, 9th October, H&H Classics will host an auction at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford. At the company’s final Cambridgeshire auction of the year, there will be 160 classic, collectable, and performance cars going under the hammer. The total value of these vehicles is estimated at over £6.5 million, which is sure to attract plenty of attention from all those in attendance.

Craig and Gordon will be ready to bid as they are heading to Duxfrod for the auction. Excitingly, Me, Nick, and Molly will also be going to meet up with some of the H&H team before the auction for some filming!

Another exciting point about this particular auction is the range of cars on offer, with models spanning over 120 years of motoring history – from early 20th-century classics to more modern performance cars.

“It’s great to mark our final Duxford sale of the year with such an impressive collection of vehicles for sale. We always have fantastic and well attended auctions in Cambridgeshire, and with such an extensive and diverse offering, I expect October’s sale to be no different.”

James McWilliam, sales manager, H&H Classics

One of the most interesting lots is a rare 1957 Bentley S1 Continental Park Ward Drophead Coupé Adaption, which is expected to sell for somewhere between £300,000 and £400,000. While this is obviously a high ticket car, there are actually 23 cars being offered without reserve, so there’s a chance that the everyday auction goer can walk away with something special too.

Also available is a 1980 pre-production Lotus Esprit ‘Essex’ Turbo which was used to develop Active Suspension for Formula One and is thought to be the first vehicle in the world with this technology. It’s expected to sell for between £70,000 and £80,000 and will make a great addition to someone’s collection.

There are several Aston Martin DB6s on offer too, including a 1967 model estimated at £250,000 to £300,000 as well as a 2001 Aston Martin Vanquish, which was used by Pierce Brosnan and EON Productions to promote Die Another Day.

I recently spoke about a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2, purchased by Madonna for her son Rocco which will be available to buy in the auction. It’s being offered without reserve and I’m always interested to see how much celebrity connections influence what people are prepared to pay for a car.

There are some pretty rare finds that will be available too. A 1970 Ford Escort Mexico, estimated at £60,000-£70,000, is the oldest known surviving car from Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (I’ve also spoken about this recently). And, if you have a spare £300,000-£350,000, you could be the new owner of a 1930 Bugatti Type 46 Weymann Coach!

New owners will also be found for a 1962 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 litre ‘Semi-Lightweight’ Coupe, one of just 19  1939 Frazer Nash-BMW 327/80 Cabriolet, and a rare  1955 Austin Healey 100M BN1 ‘Le Mans’

All of the cars will be available for viewing from midday on Tuesday, 8th October, and the auction itself begins at 1 pm the next day. I’m very much looking forward to seeing all of the vehicles up close, even if I’m not in a position to actually bid on any of them.

Dutch Barn Vodka In The Classic Lounge at Bridge Classic Cars

At Bridge Classic Cars, we want to give our guests a special experience every time they come to see us. That’s why we’re very excited to have a bottle of Dutch Barn Vodka in The Classic Lounge.

The Story Behind Dutch Barn Vodka

Dutch Barn Vodka was founded by Chris Fraser, in an old Dutch barn on Ellers Farm in North Yorkshire. After spotting unused apples in an abandoned orchard, Chris set about creating a high-quality vodka using British apples while also having sustainability at the forefront of his operations.

From a small pot still back then, Dutch Barn Vodka has now become a successful distillery, producing award-winning vodka that’s recognised not only for its taste but also for its positive environmental impact.

The distillery uses local water sourced from beneath the farm, and the brown glass bottles the vodka comes in are made from over 60% recycled glass – far more than the industry standard for clear bottles.

Plus, the distillery runs on renewable energy, reducing its carbon footprint even further.

Each batch of Dutch Barn Vodka is distilled a minimum of 70 times to make sure the finish is as smooth as possible. The apples are complemented by a small amount of potato spirit, adding a creamy texture that balances the natural fruitiness.

Ricky Gervais

In 2023, Dutch Barn Vodka was joined by comedian Ricky Gervais as co-owner of Ellers Farm Distillery.

Ricky has taken on a creative leadership role within the brand, helping to share its message of quality, sustainability, and innovation. His aim is to bring Dutch Barn Vodka to a wider audience while ensuring that the company continues to produce exceptional, planet-friendly vodka.

The Classic Lounge

Next time you’re at Bridge Classic Cars, you will have to have a glass of Dutch Barn Vodka and try it for yourself. Ricky Gervais is also set to be just down the road from the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in Ipswich soon, so we will definitely be enjoying some of his vodka while he entertains our local friends.

UK Car Production

UK car production saw a drop of 8.4% in August, according to recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Traditionally, August is a low-production month anyway as a result of summer shutdowns, and this year’s decrease only amounted to 3,781 fewer vehicles, with 41,271 cars coming off the assembly lines.

This decline aligns with the ongoing trend seen throughout the year, as factories reduce the output of existing models and prepare to produce new ones, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). This shift follows last year’s announcement of £24 billion in investment into the UK’s automotive industry.

Production of electrified vehicles, including battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid models, took a big hit, dropping by 25.9%. This brought the share of electrified vehicles to 29.6% of total output. However, the fall is expected to be temporary as manufacturers transition to new models.

Domestic production experienced a steep decline of 19.8%. However, it’s worth noting that this figure is amplified by the typically low production volume in August, with most UK-made cars destined for export markets.

In comparison, exports decreased by 5.9%, largely driven by changes to models destined for the EU. The European Union remains the largest export market for UK-made cars, accounting for nearly half (49.8%) of exports. Other key markets include the US (17%), China (6.5%), Japan (5.1%), and Australia (4.4%), with notable growth in both the US and Japanese markets.

Year-to-date figures reveal an overall decline in UK car production of 8.5%, with a total of 522,823 units produced. Despite August’s domestic downturn, production for the UK market is up 12.3% for the year.

Hennessey Venom 800 F-150

Hennessey, a hypercar and high-performance vehicle manufacturer in Texas, has just released its even more potent alternative to the Ford F-150 Raptor – the Hennessey Venom 800 F-150 and it is an absolute beast!

As there were so many customers who missed out on the Raptor R, Hennessey decided to create something new to subdue the disappointed petrolheads which led to the introduction of the Venom 800 F-150 which has some pretty impressive specifications.

Don’t be fooled by the size of this truck – it’s not just a very capable workhorse but it is also exceptionally fast. Producing 800 bhp at 6,200 rpm and 757 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm the Venom 800 can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and cover a quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds!

“Demand for powerfully designed and engineered Hennessey trucks continues to grow strongly. Our new Venom 800 F-150 is the super truck that our clients have been asking for. Highly capable both on- and off-road, it offers the perfect combination of performance, utility, and luxury.”

John Hennessey, company founder and CEO

This Venom 800 features some pretty extensive upgrades including significant improvements to the suspension, wheels, tyres, and powertrain. Some of the most exciting upgrades are the addition of a 3.0-litre supercharger, upgraded air-to-water intercooler, high-performance fuel injection, and a high-flow air induction system. These have been paired with Hennessey’s proprietary engine management calibration, a dual-tip cat-back exhaust, and six-piston Brembo brakes to further beef up the Venom 800’s capabilities.

Hennessey Venom 800 – On And Off The Road

In addition to the sheer power of the Venom 800, the truck is also very capable off-road. It features a six-inch BDS suspension lift with FOX coilovers, improved rear shocks, 20-inch Hennessey 10-spoke wheels, and 35-inch off-road tyres. The tough front and rear ‘Venom’ bumpers are made of steel and come with integrated LED off-road lights in the front.

Despite its power, speed, and durability, the Venom 800 is also stylish and comfortable. It has a one-piece carbon fibre grille, electronic fold-out running boards, and illuminated Venom 800 badges on the front fenders. Inside, the truck has embroidered Hennessey script on the headrests, all-weather floor mats, American flag inserts, and a serial-numbered plaque.

For 2024, only 250 units of this limited-edition model will be available globally.

Classic Car Auctions & Iconic Auctioneers

Back in 2015, the team behind Iconic Auctioneers (previously known as Silverstone Auctions), formed Classic Car Auctions (CCA). The company has always operated independently of its sister company and has specialised in Everyman Classics. However, things are changing and the two companies are about to merge with Iconic Auctioneers being the name for the combined companies.

The Classic Car Sale being hosted by CCA on September 28, 2024, at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, will be the final auction held under the Classic Car Auctions Ltd. name. From October, CCA will officially be acquired by Iconic Auctioneers Ltd, merging the two companies into one.

Despite the acquisition, the team behind Classic Car Auctions will remain the same, and the auctions will continue to be hosted at many of their familiar venues. However, there will be a fresh look. The auctions will be rebranded as The Classic Sales by Iconic Auctioneers, with a new logo and branding to match.

“Most of our customers know that CCA and IA are sister companies, so bringing them together as one company makes sense, but more importantly it will significantly enhance the exposure of the CCA cars on the Iconic Auctioneers website, which is a much busier site. It will also allow buyers to search for specific marques across all our sales in one place. As well as offer customers a wider range of services including Iconic Auctioneers online, motorcycle, automobilia and private sales.”

Rob Hubbard, Managing Director of Iconic Auctioneers

From early October, visitors to the Classic Car Auctions website will be redirected to iconicauctioneers.com.

On this website, you’ll be able to browse upcoming and past Classic Sales, along with other auctions offered by Iconic Auctioneers. The site will use a colour-coding system to differentiate the sales – Classic Sales will have a burgundy sidebar and feature the new CCA logo, while Iconic Auctioneers sales will display a blue sidebar with their IA logo.

This updated branding will also be reflected on the company’s social media channels and advertisements.

We very often attend auctions hosted by both companies so we are excited to see what the future holds now they are becoming one!

Hydrogen Powered Vehicles

Hyundai Motor Company and Škoda Group have joined forces to try to advance hydrogen mobility by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Korea-Czech Business Summit, held in Prague on September 20th, 2024. This collaboration aims to promote the adoption of hydrogen technology in the transportation sector, contributing to a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.

The signing ceremony featured Ken Ramírez, Executive Vice President of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Business at Hyundai Motor Company, and Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group. Both companies pledged their commitment to exploring hydrogen fuel cell systems and energy-efficient solutions for future mobility projects.

“We believe that hydrogen, alongside energy-efficient solutions, will play an essential role in transforming mobility for a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company aims at enabling us to look beyond national borders and explore wider markets where these technologies can have a larger impact. By working together, we can bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to the global mobility ecosystem, advancing cleaner energy in the areas where it’s needed most,”

Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group.

Both companies share the belief that hydrogen will play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable society, particularly within the transportation sector. H&H Classics Are Moving

Our friends at H&H Classics have moved out of their long-standing base into a temporary location in preparation for a permanent move into new premises. Their eventual new home will be something of a hub for the classic car community and we are very much looking forward to seeing it in the very near future.

H&H has been hosting auctions for more than 30 years, with almost 20 of those having its base at The Motor House in Warrington. For the time being, Cinnamon House in Warrington is where the team at H&H will be working from but the permanent location will be designed to host auctions, automotive events, and more.

The new premises aim to be an ideal base for clients and employees, with the H&H Management stating their commitment to ensuring it offers a productive and enjoyable work environment.

“H&H Classics plays an integral role in the classic car community, so we’re keen to make sure our future location will give something back to enthusiasts, as well as being an exciting base for our business and our employees. Watch this space for more details, which we will announce in due course.”

– Colette McKay, managing director at H&H Classics

Although headquartered in Cheshire, H&H Classics hosts auctions throughout the UK, including in Derbyshire, Cambridgeshire, and the West Midlands. This national presence has helped the company build and develop a huge network of clients and industry contacts. Since the beginning of 2024, H&H has offered highly sought-after vehicles, such as a scooter featured in the film Quadrophenia and a Bentley once owned by Peter Sellers. A recent automobilia auction at the Warrington location saw every single lot successfully sold, proving the auction house’s continued success.

While fond memories are obviously attached to The Motor House, H&H Classics is keen to move into the next chapter of its story with its soon-to-be-announced new premises.

“We’ll miss The Motor House as we have fond memories built up over nearly two decades, but more importantly substantial new premises will be revealed soon and, we hope, will be a beacon for classic car owners.”

– Colette McKay, managing director at H&H Classics

East Saxons TR Register Group Visit

Earlier today, we welcomed the East Saxons Group of the TR Register to The Classic Lounge at Bridge Classic Cars.

This was the first time that the group had been to see us and we loved meeting them all.

While they were here, they were able to enjoy a coffee and a catch up with their fellow group members before having an exclusive tour of the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

It was a great morning and we hope to welcome you all back again very soon.

The Return Of The VW Transporter

The new Volkswagen Transporter has finally been revealed by film legend, Jason Statham.

For those of you who haven’t yet made the connection, Statham was in the run of films called ‘The Transporter’ where he transported any package, no matter the legality, to wherever his customers needed it to be.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) recruited Jason Statham as his on-screen character transported his cargo no matter what and VW are obviously looking to demonstrate the capabilities of the new Transporter in that way too.

The first video trailer was released on Sunday in Hanover and featured both Statham and the new Transporter van.

“We are thrilled to have Jason Statham as the face of our new campaign. Its energy and unmistakable style are a perfect match for our new Transporter, which is known for its robustness, reliability and innovative technology. The reactions to the trailer here on site and online were promising.

Sandra Waidelich, Head of Sales & Marketing Experience at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles

The advertising campaign is looking to demonstrate the impressive features of the van such as load capacity, superior driving characteristics, and state-of-the-art safety features.

The Transporter is back!

Paint Stripping

Chris has been stripping the paint off of our 1963 Rover P4. After he removed the paint from the doors, he noted that the bottoms of the doors needed replacing.

Once the bottoms were removed, the new ones were fitted.

Once the doors were stripped, Chris then removed the paint from the main body of the car and found areas of rust and damage.

Epoxy primer was then applied to the boot and bonnet.

International Autojumble at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu

At the weekend, I headed down to Beaulieu with Nick and Molly for the International Autojumble at the National Motor Museum. As we are around classic cars every day, it can take quite a lot to wow us when it comes to motoring history. However, after spending some time in the museum and browsing the autojumble, all three of us were very impressed

We would all like to say a big thank you to Poppy and the rest of the team at the museum for reaching out to Molly and inviting us to the event – we all had a fantastic day!

The Best Bits of the International Autojumble

1. The National Motor Museum

The National Motor Museum is home to close to 300 vehicles, from early motor cars to more modern machines.

A personal favourite of mine was the 1000bhp Sunbeam that is currently being restored at the museum.

This car, known as ‘The Slug’ was the one that Major Henry Segrave drove on Daytona Beach at more than 200mph on the 29th of March 1927. This was the first time that any car had ever reached this speed and set a new land speed record. Now, almost 100 years later, the museum is slowly bringing this ground-breaking car back to life thanks to its fundraising campaign.

The campaign aims to raise £300,000 for a full restoration and to take ‘The Slug’ back to Daytona Beach in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the record in 2027. Restoring a car that has two 22.5-litre V12 engines is obviously a huge task so a major fundraising campaign is needed to make it possible.

As well as ‘The Slug’, Nick clearly enjoyed seeing a 1953 Volkswagen Type 1 “Beetle” that was very similar to one he used to own. He has also said that 1953 produced his favourite version of this iconic classic.

Molly also had a great time putting the many interactive exhibits to good use!

2. Classic Cars for Sale

It was great to be able to spend some time getting a closer look at some of the cars going under the hammer with Bonhams. From MGBs to E-Types and everything in between, there was a huge variety of vehicles up for sale.

The three of us haven’t been to many car auctions so to get up close with cars of this calibre certainly added another level of excitement to our day.

3. The Automart

The Automart is where you go to find a project. Whether you are looking for a shell of a car to rebuild and bring back to life or a non-runner that will be back up and running with a little bit of time and attention – there are plenty of options.

We see cars in various stages of restoration in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop so it’s really nice that everyone in attendance had the opportunity to see some of the best-looking cars of all time in various states of repair!

4. The Autojumble

The International Autojumble is a huge event that features a wide variety of car parts, memorabilia, display pieces, and everything in between.

Perhaps one example that goes some way in explaining the range of things available is by looking at what the three of us purchased. Nick got a framed poster of the Silver Arrow W196 that sold for £19 million, Molly bought a Lambretta poster, and I got a small Rolls-Royce picture and a steering wheel!

In addition to our purchases, we saw old workshop manuals, vintage petrol pumps, signs, classic car brochures from back in the day, and more tools than the entire workshop team could ever need!

The Monorail, Top Gear, and More

We couldn’t visit the National Motor Museum without taking a ride on the monorail. The short trip allowed us to see a big part of the autojumble from above (and have a great time while doing so).

The Top Gear exhibition was definitely something all three of us loved. With Top Gear and The Grand Tour now coming to an end, it seemed so relevant that we could see some of the most iconic and memorable vehicles from the show in person.

The on-screen cars exhibit also brought back memories of TV shows and films that we have all watched over the years.

Bridge Classic Cars at the International Autojumble

The International Autojumble was a fantastic event for us to attend. There was so much to see and so many different vehicles to look at on top of the vast number of stallholders selling some hard-to-find pieces.

As I have said previously, we have cars from the early 1900s all the way through to modern cars around us every day in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop but, even with that in mind, Molly, Nick, and I found the display vehicles to be attention-grabbing and we loved every minute of our visit.

This was our first time at the International Autojumble and we will certainly be going back again. Once again, thank you to everyone at the National Motor Museum for such a great day and we hope to see you again very soon!

Good Deed 9/20 – Supporting The RSPCA

On Sunday, September 8th, Helmingham Hall in Suffolk hosted Suffolk Dog Day, presented by St Elizabeth Hospice. This event was all about fun activities for the family, dog shows, and a whole load of opportunities for pet owners to celebrate the dogs in their lives. This year’s event was even more special for us, as we brought Suffolk Dog Day into our 20th anniversary celebration.

As part of our 20th-anniversary celebrations, the team here at Bridge Classic Cars has committed to performing 20 good deeds throughout the year as a way of giving back to the community that has supported us over the past two decades. On Sunday, one of these good deeds was providing the vehicle being used for the donation station on behalf of RSPCA Suffolk Central. All donations received will be used in the Martlesham Animal Rescue Centre, shops, and welfare clinics.

We had our van on site all day to receive your donations. We collected so much more than we were expecting so the delivery to the rescue centre on Tuesday morning was very exciting.

Classic Car Auction

An auction taking place on Wednesday, 9th October, is offering car enthusiasts and collectors the chance to own two very special cars. The auction, hosted by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum Duxford, will feature the oldest known surviving Ford AVO Car, a 1970 Ford Escort Mexico and a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2, once owned by pop legend Madonna.

The Oldest Known Ford AVO Car – Ford Escort Mexico

Believed to be the oldest surviving model from Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO), the 1970 Ford Escort Mexico was one of the few “launch” models built in October 1970, just before official production began.

Expected to sell for between £60,000-£70,000, this car holds a special place in Ford’s history. It carries a unique ‘LVX’ press registration plate, indicating its use for promotional purposes by Ford. The Escort Mexico has been fully restored between 2006 and 2017, with over £60,000 invested to bring it back to its factory-original specification. The restoration was focused on preserving as many original parts as possible while using genuine replacements when needed.

This specific example was also lent to Hendon Police College and tested against trainee pursuit drivers before later being purchased by a police officer from the same driving school. The Escort is accompanied by a detailed history file, which includes a rare sales brochure, a feature in Classic Ford magazine, and the original logbook.

“It’s a privilege to offer this 1970 Ford Escort Mexico AVO car for auction.

It is an unmissable opportunity for any fast Ford fanatic as opportunities to acquire AVO cars with such provenance are truly unrepeatable.”

This Mexico is one of the first handful of Escort Mexico’s produced, believed to be one of four, before official production began. It is also the joint second Mexico registered, being registered new to Ford Motor Company on December 4th 1970.

We expect there to be strong interest in this very special model at our auction in October.”

Paul Cheetham, motor car specialist at H&H Classics

A Celebrity Connection – Madonna’s 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2

In addition to the Ford Mexico, the auction will also feature a 1967 Jaguar Mark X 4.2 that was once owned by global music superstar Madonna. Purchased by Madonna in 2021 for her son Rocco Ritchie, it is now being offered at no reserve!

The Jaguar Mark X 4.2 is a special model in its own right. Known for its large, luxurious design, the Mark X was primarily targeted at the North American market, appealing to high-profile buyers such as diplomats and film stars. The 4.2-litre version, produced for just two years, had impressive features for its time, including independent rear suspension and a top speed of 120mph, making it a more affordable alternative to the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

The car has recently undergone a full repaint in Opalescent Maroon and comes with its original green logbook.

“It’s incredible to be offering a Jaguar for sale with such close connections to Madonna and I’m sure fans and classic car collectors will be hung up on this Mark X.

“Putting aside its famous celebrity connection, this Big Cat is a rare 4.2 litre example that was only in production for two years, and I’m sure Rocco would have enjoyed driving it.

There were only 5,137 Jaguar Mark X 4.2 litre models ever built. Our auction offers the chance to own an important piece of British motoring history that has also been bought by one of the most famous people on the planet. It’s a car that will always remain in vogue.”

– Lucas Gomersall, motor car specialist at H&H Classics

Both of these cars will be available to bid on in person, online, or via telephone at the auction on 9th October. For more information or to register to bid, visit the H&H Classics website at www.handh.co.uk.

Goodwood Revival 2024

The 2024 Goodwood Revival, as always, delivered an incredible weekend of vintage racing, celebrations, and plenty of nostalgia. Running from Friday, September 6th, to Sunday, September 8th, the event welcomed legendary drivers, beautiful classic cars, and some very exciting, albeit wet, races, all while championing sustainability.

In a world-first for historic motorsport, the entire race schedule was run on sustainable fuel. This is a perfect example of the progress being made in making motorsports greener, with every competitor using fuel that was at least 70% advanced sustainable components.

Racing Highlights and Icons

The track was the place for racing in all of its vintage glory, despite some unpredictable weather. Standout moments included Michael Russell and Michael Rutter taking the win on a Norton Velocette MSS in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy. In the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy, the pairing of Dario Franchitti and Jimmie Johnson raced their Aston Martin DB4GT to victory.

The Settrington Cup allowed young drivers to show off their skills in Austin J40 pedal cars, with Josh Johnston emerging victorious, with Luca Franchitti and Hugo Upward not too far behind.

Goodwood Revival also welcomed an incredible lineup of motorsport champions, including Formula 1 legends Sir Jackie Stewart and Jacques Villeneuve, NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, and Isle of Man TT winner John McGuinness. It was a hugely successful event, with familiar faces from BTCC, Le Mans, and even Formula E taking to the track.

Honouring Legends and Marking Milestones

One special moment was the tribute to John Surtees, celebrating 60 years since his Formula 1 World Championship win. Cars and bikes from his remarkable career paraded the track, honouring his legacy across multiple disciplines. Another powerful tribute commemorated the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, with over 100 military vehicles, including a beautifully restored Rolls-Royce Wraith Staff Car, parading to honour the veterans.

A Weekend to Remember

Away from the track, the skies were also something to watch with the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation display featuring rare aircraft, including several Supermarine Spitfires. The Revive & Thrive Village once again impressed with workshops, fashion displays, and talks celebrating creativity and craftsmanship.

For the Bridge Classic Cars team, the weekend was a big success. Craig, Managing Director of Bridge Classic Cars, attended the event and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with Ben, Jake, and the rest of the P1 Fuels team, making the experience all the more memorable

The 2025 Revival is already scheduled for September 12th – 14th next year, and tickets go on sale in November.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s Goodwood season!

World EV Day 2024

Each year, World EV Day promotes the importance of sustainable transport, and this year, in 2024, it’s probably more relevant than ever. As the world is realising our battle with climate change is going to be a big one, the electric vehicle (EV) initiative offers a cleaner, greener alternative to fossil-fuelled vehicles. On September 9th, we acknowledge that there is and will continue to be a shift towards a more sustainable automotive industry.

The Start of World EV Day

Back in 2020, World EV Day began with a mission to celebrate electric vehicles and encourage more drivers to make the switch. Fast forward to 2024, and EVs are no longer the niche products they once were. The event has grown into a global movement, with governments, car manufacturers, and consumers coming together to push for an electric-powered future.

The transportation sector remains a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, and EVs offer one way to reduce this footprint. According to the 2022 World EV Day whitepaper, the number of EVs on global roads doubled between 2021 and 2022 as more drivers understand their impact on the planet.

Why 2024 is important

The UK is pushing towards a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. With advancements in battery technology, more efficient charging stations, and increased affordability, the barriers to going electric are gradually coming down.

That being said, there’s still work to be done. The 2022 whitepaper research highlighted that while 64% of people planning to buy a car would consider an EV, many still find the process confusing. Concerns about the perceived cost and availability of charging infrastructure remain common stumbling blocks.

What’s New in 2024?

In 2024, several exciting technologies are big talking points. Solid-state batteries, which promise faster charging times, longer ranges, and increased safety, are set to potentially change the game. As manufacturers work to perfect this technology, it could mean the end of range anxiety – one of the biggest concerns for potential EV buyers.

Another development is vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows EVs to not just take power from the grid but also give it back. This can help balance supply and demand on the grid, especially during peak times. Imagine using your EV to power your home during a blackout or helping your local grid during an energy crunch – that’s the kind of future people in the EV world want.

Charging Infrastructure: A Key Piece of the Puzzle

One of the biggest concerns for anyone thinking of going electric is where and how to charge their car. . According to data from 2022, the UK saw a 35% increase in public charging stations. This growth is critical as more people switch to EVs.

Ultra-fast chargers, which can top up an EV in around 20 minutes, are becoming more widespread, making long-distance travel in an EV more convenient. Home charging stations are also more affordable and easier to install, allowing drivers to wake up every morning to a fully charged vehicle. Businesses are also stepping up, with companies like Shell Recharge partnering with retailers like Aldi to provide convenient charging points at popular locations.

Addressing Concerns: Making the Switch Easier

One of the themes for World EV Day 2024 is accessibility. While many people like the idea of switching to electric, there’s still hesitation. Affordability, particularly for younger and rural drivers, remains a challenge. The whitepaper found that 53% of drivers agreed that the process of switching to an EV was confusing, often due to concerns around cost.

But there are reasons to be optimistic. The growing second-hand EV market is providing a more affordable entry point for many drivers. Companies like Auto Trader are reporting a significant rise in searches for used EVs, and this trend is expected to continue as more EVs enter the second-hand marketWith more affordable options and better financing and leasing deals, going electric is becoming more attainable for a broader range of people.

The Role of Governments and Corporations

Government policies have played a significant role in accelerating the transition to electric vehicles. From the EU’s Green Deal to tax incentives in the US, governments are making it easier and more appealing to go electric. Public sector fleets are also leading by example, with many cities electrifying their bus and taxi services.

Companies like Amazon and UPS are transitioning their fleets to electric vehicles, both to reduce emissions and to save on fuel costs. According to the 2022 whitepaper, companies are increasingly recognising that electrification isn’t just good for the planet. it’s good for business.

The Road Ahead: What’s Next for EVs?

As we mark World EV Day 2024, it’s clear that there is a place for EVs. However, there are still challenges to overcome. One major hurdle is public perception, particularly around the environmental impact of EV production, especially batteries. While EVs are undoubtedly cleaner in terms of day-to-day driving, their production and disposal processes still raise environmental concerns.

Manufacturers are working on solutions. For instance, Volkswagen is investing in cleaner production processes and carbon-neutral factories. Battery recycling programs are also gaining traction, helping to address concerns around the lifecycle of EV batteries.

Celebrating a sustainable automotive industry

I think it’s important that we don’t take World EV Day as electric being the only solution to a sustainable automotive industry but rather as a day to recognise the broader shift toward sustainable transportation. It’s about understanding that every step we take towards a greener industry is a step towards a cleaner, healthier planet.

As we look to the future, it’s clear that electric vehicles will likely play a role in our transportation systems. However, I think it’s also important to keep in mind synthetic fuel, hydrogen, and other future fuels that will be developed.
