The 1991 Jaguar XJS V12 is in the restoration workshop at our Suffolk HQ for the Bridge Classic Cars team to begin work on after its appraisal. Our technician Jon has been heading up the project on the mechanical side of things – carrying out various repairs in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.
”Start service. Remove distributor cap and check along with rotor, order new items. Drain oil and filter. Start to remove rear axle while oil is draining. Refit sump bung and secure and fit new oil filter. Remove both exhaust rear sections. Remove propshaft. Remove rear seats to access ABS multiplugs for rear sensors. Found bottom of offside rear seat burnt and damage to foam. Upon inspection, the heat shield for exhaust directly under seat gone and floor rusted and holed. Will need new heat shield and welding repair. Strap car to ramp.”
”Remove rear axle assembly. Strip and remove handbrake calipers. Remove main calipers. Axle now turns freely. Needs new calipers. Start cleaning parts.
Strip and fit offside rear axle mount. Strip nearside trailing arm and press out old and press in new bush Clean handbrake calipers and all associated parts to be re used. Clean all mounting bolts and find replacement for incorret one fitted to nearside. Strop and remove gearbox mount.”
”Clean and rebuild gearbox mount with new bush and spring cups. Fit and secure. Remove rear heat shield and clean floor. Noticed offside catalyst has been gutted or punched through and most of monolith missing.clewn and straighten flange. Tidy area.
Clean floor from inside and grind back to good metal where floor is holed and requires welding. Strip boot and remove fuel sender. Test sender and not functioning correctly. Tank has 10 to 15 litres. Use our pump to empty tank. Disconnect fuel filter and blow lines back from engine and back to tank. Fit new fuel filter and connect. Put 10ltrs E5 in tank.
Fit new air filters. Strip and start fitting new spark plugs.”
”Continue replacing spark plugs. Remove throttle tower to gain access to certain plugs. Refit throttle tower and linkage. Replace small return spring. Remove front coil pack and attempt to removeac pump to get to front plugs but AC adjuster seized so undo and move as best as I can to fit new plugs. Resecure ac pump. Fit new rotor arm and distributor cap. Refit HT leads in correct positions. Fit new clip to cruise control linkage.
Fill with new oil. Rear axle. Fit new calipers. Bend new brake pipes to fit calipers. Fit handbrake calipers and lube pins. Adjust linkages and fit split pins. Fit new rear service brake pads. Fit easi bleed to nearside caliper and drill and fix to frame.
”Refit rear heatshield. Trim off broken areas both sides.measure and cut new heatshiels from thermolite sheet. Reuse part from old offside shield and fix to new. Remove nearside exhaust and check catalyst. Cat OK nearside. Clean flange. Measure and cut plates and make new shield for offside. Re-use sides from old shield and fix in place.
Clean rear axle trailing arms. Wire wheel and sand down. Paint both trailing arms black.”
”Prep to refit axle. Trailing arms have had 3 coats of black DTM paint and have dried. Remove rear flexi hose and let brake fluid drain. Align axle and lower ramp. Secure axle to car and tighten all mounts. Raise car and fit handbrake cable. Tidy area.”
