The Bridge Classic Cars workshop team have been pressing on with the 1959 Jaguar MkIX project. Our incredible technician Jon has been turning his attention to the classic Jaguar to get the last few jobs completed and begin the testing phase of the car,
‘Make wire to go from original solenoid on bulkhead to new starter. Crimp and solder onspade terminal one end. Feed wire through and to solenoid. Cut amd crimp on bullet and then use joiner to connect. Fit starter and secure. Test, starts fine now. Tidy and secure wiring and refit clutch reservoir.’
‘Attend to hanbrake. Remove link from rear axle pivot and cut down cable thread. Refit end link and reattach. Adjust nearside cable via cable adjuster. Reconnect main cable and pin. Find return spring to fit to lever on chassis. Drill hole in inner wing and fit spring to lever and test. Adjust clutch pedal height as sitting lower than brake pedal and bite point low. Remove master cylinder under push rod end and weld new one to give more thread. Refit and adjust until pedal height set. Lower to floor and test. Feels better. Refit intake pipe and air filter. Remove all wheels again and bleed brakes. Lots of air in fronts. Top up fluid and refit wheels. Torque up and refit trims. Take outside warm up and adjust idle. Carry out road test. 2 chrome rings from wheels came off but managed to find all clips and put in back of car. Adjust idle speed and mixture slightly. Re-road test with John to assess noises and performance.’
‘Go and fit offside quarter window striker. Remove wood capping and find screws to fit. Put down screws and grind heads to countersunk shape. Fit and test. Notch out wood capping to fit around striker and refit. Test window ok.’
‘Been road tested by John and i have a couple of things to look at. Check brakes and overdrive. Firstly remove all chrome rings from wheels and place in boot. Visually inspect braking system. Servo under car. Return spring been fitted to master cylinder. Brakes bled up fine yesterday.’
‘Check overdrive always live. Check gearbox switch and both sides go to earth. Remove switch and test but working ok. Reconnect but don’t fit to gearbox and still works. Remove earth from old switch on dash and test. Now works correctly and only when in 3rd or 4th gear. Refit tunnel access panel and cover and carpet.’
‘Brakes staying on or hanging up. Pump pedal several times and check each wheel spins freely. Both fronts a little tight. Remove front wheels. Get will to hold pedal down and release. Strip and remove nearside pads and check pistons return . Tight to squeeze back but they do go back.’
