Pete has undertaken additional weld repairs on our 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante following further preparation by the paint team, who uncovered several cracks and splits beneath previously painted and filled sections. These flaws, hidden in corners and recesses, have now been alloy welded and carefully sanded to restore the correct contour lines of the bodywork. This approach has significantly improved the integrity of the repair, prioritising metal over filler, particularly important given the condition of the alloy panels due to earlier bodywork.
He has also addressed the mounting points for the side “gills” by filling the existing holes, which had become excessively elongated. As the gills will be replaced, fresh holes can be drilled to suit the new fittings, ensuring a cleaner and more accurate installation.
With the final bodywork repairs now completed, Pete has started the reassembly of the running gear. New Armstrong shock absorbers have been installed along with new drop links, bump stops, and powder-coated brackets. He has also begun preparing suspension components by fettling parts and pressing in new bushes, and has refurbished the upper spring seat spacers in readiness for fitting the new seats.
There are, however, some complications with the fitment of the new trailing arm bushes, and a solution is currently being worked on in collaboration with Aston Martin. All being well, the DB6 Volante is expected to be back on its wheels by the end of this week.
