The Bridge Classic Cars restoration team have been working hard on getting this 1981 Porsche 911 back out on the road and running better than ever, with our technician Oscar heading up the charge with the help of our technician Andy.
To begin with, Oscar has had to clean and repin some of the wiring connectors along with replacing a broken O2 sensor plug so that the car is getting all of the correct information and readings once the engine is back in place. Whilst out of the car, the clutch and pressure plate was inspected and found to be worn and glazed so were replaced by the team as the assembly was taken apart.
Once all done, the engine and gearbox could be raised back into the car for the team to reconnet the various lines and tubework also driveshafts and suspension components. Once in place, our technician Andy began to rerun the systems and wiring back in place.
‘Removed broken fuel pressure hose connector from fuel pressure regulator to find union thread damaged, removed union and cleaned up thread.Cleaned up head to manifold studs. Fitted bungs to new airbox, removed injector and fixing, removed pipe from old airbox and fitted parts to new airbox.
Fitted o/s rubber hoses to airbox to find airbox pipes 5mm bigger than original airbox, so heated rubber hoses with boiling water and fitted, then fitted new hose clips, then did the same to n/s rubber hoses, then fitted 2 o/s inlet manifold tubes to airbox.
Fitted airbox to engine and then fitted 2 inlet tubes to head on o/s, then fitted 3rd o/s inlet manifold tube to airbox and then head, then located airbox onto mounts then connected wiringand pipes to air valve on o/s middle manifold tube.’
‘Fitted brass joining tube to repair o/s breather hose, fitted new gasket to metering unit and then fitted metering unit to airbox and tightened up fixing bolts, fitted pipe to airbox injector, fuel lines refitted, refitted throttle body assembly, refitted brackets and clamps for fuel lines. Fitted o/s fuel pipes from metering unit to injectors, then fitted join pipe between metering unit and throttle body, and refitted breather pipes.
Fitted n/s middle inlet manifold tube, fitted rear inlet manifold tube and tightened up hose clips, fitted front n/s inlet tube to airbox and head, tightened up and then fitted bracket between manifold tubes, fitted metal pipe that goes into top of throttle body and connected to breather system, fitted to bracket, fitted fuel lines from metering unit to n/s fuel pressure regulator to find new pipe not fitting properly.
Removed pipe and cut down pipe union, refitted fuel pressure regulator pipe and then fitted n/s fuel pipes to metering units to injectors, repaired brake servo pipe with joiner and new pipe, then fitted air box lid, refitted blower motor, refitted all pipes to motor, connected battery and started car to find runs OK but fuel leak from fuel filter and new pipe on metering unit, removed air blower tightened fuel filter union and then removed pipe to metering unit.’
‘Removed fuel pipe from metering unit, removed n/s fuel pipes from metering unit and then swapped metering unit joiners, cleaned and refitted, refitted new pipe to metering unit and tightened up, then refitted n/s fuel pipes, refitted air filter assembly and run engine, no fuel leaks.
Removed some engine oil and then run up engine to temperature and topped up oil until oil level was correct.’
‘Adjusted loose air-conditioning pump belt, blanked off open pipe on airbox base with tape, run engine, put 10ltrs of fuel in tank, run engine to temperature and checked oil level to find to high, checked gearbox oil OK, found both driveshafts have no fixing on gaiters, so fitted 4 cable ties to secure gaiters.’
‘Run up engine again to find hunting when warm, so adjusted mixture and idle speed, then went to road test , got to end of yard, now have no 1st and 2nd gears, put back on ramp, removed gear linkage gaiter and linkage inspection plate to find coupling had moved, reset linkage to gearbox rod and now can select all gears, checked rear clamp to find bolt missing, fitted new bolt, refitted inspection cover and gear lever gaiter.’
