A highly original 1956 Jaguar D-Type, one of just 71 ever built, is set to go to auction at Broad Arrow’s Zürich Auction on 1st November 2025. Held in partnership with Auto Zürich, the auction will take place at the Dolder Grand hotel, with the un-raced D-Type looking to be one of the most popular lots.

Chassis XKD 551 is a short-nose example and among the last D-Types built. Importantly, it has never been involved in competitive motorsport. This is an unusual position for a car that was originally engineered for the track. Its originality, combined with matching chassis and engine numbers, places it among the most desirable D-Types in existence. Broad Arrow estimates it will sell for between £4.62 and £5.5 million.

Sold new in October 1957, the D-Type was converted early on to semi-XKSS specification. This included the removal of the central bulkhead, the addition of a passenger-side door, and a full-width windscreen. In 1963, it was bought by Hon. James Dawnay, well-known for owning and racing the Aston Martin DBR1/1, and later by Australian Formula 1 driver Paul Hawkins.

During the 1970s, the XKSS-style modifications were reversed, restoring the car to its original D-Type configuration. Its current Swiss owner acquired it in 1994 and has cared for it meticulously for over three decades. To protect its originality, the D-Type’s original XK inline-six engine (no. E 2070-9) was previously removed and kept in storage following a rebuild in 2005. That original engine has now been refitted, with final preparations for the auction handled by Graber Sportgarage.

In addition to its incredible condition, XKD 551 comes with a comprehensive history and documentation, including a 1992 FIA Historical Identity Form, 2009 FIA Passport, and 2012 FIVA Identity Card. It is eligible for historic events such as the Goodwood Revival, Mille Miglia Storica, and Le Mans Classic.

“The excitement is building ahead of our inaugural Zürich Auction. The addition of this truly superb example of the iconic Jaguar D-Type will undoubtedly add to that excitement among international car collectors. There is plenty more to come and we can’t wait to share additional news on the highly desirable models that will be joining the catalogue soon.”

Paul Gaucher, Head of Consignments for Switzerland at Broad Arrow Auctions.
