Toyota has officially introduced the ninth generation of the Hilux. This generation offers more powertrain options than ever before, including the first battery-electric and hydrogen-powered versions.

Electrified

The Hilux BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) is the first of its kind. It keeps the toughness you’d expect of a Hilux thanks to a traditional body-on-frame construction and off-road enhancements, such as underbody protection for the 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery and a permanent all-wheel-drive setup. Early estimates suggest a WLTP range of around 150 miles, with a towing capacity of 1,600kg and a payload of 715kg.

A hydrogen fuel cell version is also confirmed and will join the line-up in 2028. It will further demonstrate Toyota’s continued investment in alternative fuels and hydrogen technology across its global range.

Electrified Diesel

The 2.8D 48V variant is expected to become the UK and European best-seller. It pairs a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. The battery is stored under the rear seats to preserve cabin space. Enhanced torque and smoother low-speed driving come as standard, while payload (1000kg) and towing (3500kg) figures are also strong.

Design and Tech Upgrades

All versions of the new Hilux have a single Double Cab body style, along with electric power steering (for Western Europe) and all-wheel drive. The redesigned exterior gives subtle nods to the new Toyota Land Cruiser, with a “Tough and Agile” look and a fresh front end featuring slim headlights and a TOYOTA grille bar.

Inside, drivers get a more refined and tech-forward cabin. Depending on the grade, the dashboard houses up to a 12.3-inch digital display and central multimedia touchscreen, with grouped controls for off-road systems. Wireless charging and rear USB ports are also available.

Connectivity is managed through the MyToyota app, which supports everything from EV status updates to fleet data management for up to ten vehicles.

Safety and Assistance Features

This is the most advanced Hilux yet in terms of safety. Alongside Toyota Safety Sense updates, including Emergency Driving Stop and Proactive Driving Assist, drivers can also benefit from Blind Spot Monitoring, Safe Exit Assist, and a Driver Monitor Camera. Over-the-air updates will keep features current as technology evolves.

Coming Soon to the UK

UK sales of the all-new Hilux begin in June 2026, with detailed specs and pricing to be announced closer to launch. Production of the 2.8D 48V variant starts in spring 2026, while traditional combustion engines will remain available in Eastern European markets.
