The Toyota Hilux has long been known as a dependable workhorse, tackling everything from rough trails to urban commutes without breaking a sweat. Now, it’s stepping into the electrified era with the introduction of the Hilux Hybrid 48V – a mild hybrid system that enhances performance without compromising the truck’s famed toughness.

Available in the UK exclusively in the Invincible X Double Cab, the new powertrain pairs Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine with a compact 48V mild hybrid system. It includes a lithium-ion battery, a new electric motor generator, a 48V lithium-ion hybrid battery and a DC-DC converter. All of this is integrated with the vehicle without major rework to the existing drivetrain.

Importantly, Toyota’s hybrid tech doesn’t get in the way of what the Hilux does best. It still wades through water up to 700mm deep, hauls up to 1,000kg, and tows 3.5 tonnes. Features like a high-mounted battery and a two-arm belt tensioner – a first for Toyota – help ensure reliability in harsh conditions, including deep water crossings.

Off-roaders will appreciate the new Multi-Terrain Select system, which lets drivers tailor traction and stability to surfaces like mud, sand, rock, and snow. A reduced idling speed (from 720 to 600rpm) and improved low-speed control make the Hilux even more adept at handling tricky terrain.

Comfort and safety haven’t been overlooked either. The Hybrid 48V features Toyota Safety Sense, which includes adaptive cruise control, a refined pre-collision system, and automatic high beams. Inside, there’s an eight-inch multimedia system with JBL audio, plus smartphone connectivity and the MyToyota app for remote access and pre-conditioning.

This is still very much a Hilux – tough, practical, and reliable – but with a modern twist that blends capability with cleaner, smoother running.

The Toyota Hilux has gone hybrid!
