The Story of a 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 Bautista, Number 002/219

Limited production vehicles are always interesting to me. I love how they usually have a level of importance and meaning to the manufacturers, the owners, and the community of enthusiasts who have a passion for them.

That’s why when a collection of rare Ducati motorbikes showed up the other day, I wanted to dig a bit deeper and find their full stories. This 2023 Ducati Panigale V4 Bautista seemed like the perfect starting point, as it is number 002 of just 219 ever made.

That obviously puts it right at the very beginning of the production run. Early-number cars and bikes always hold an extra level of appeal. This is because they are the closest you can get to the original concept behind their design, and the ones that often stay with the manufacturer or a very select group of people close to them.

This one has a bit of a different story, though.

Preserved, Not Used

Not only is this the second example off the production line, it has also covered just 1 mile from new. Effectively, this is a completely unused bike that is in the same condition it left the Ducati factory a few years ago.

This probably suggests that it was never purchased to be ridden; it was highly likely purchased to be preserved as something of a time capsule from a time when Ducati were achieving huge success in racing.

I can’t imagine how tempting it must have been for someone with a clear passion for motorbikes not to simply jump on and ride it, even for a few miles. Instead, though, it has been preserved in exceptional condition and is a completely untouched, unused, and extremely well looked-after rare bike.

Built as a Celebration

The Bautista Replica was made to celebrate Bautista’s success in WorldSBK. The connection to the Aruba.it Racing team is clear on pretty much every part of the bike. The livery, the stance, and the overall presence all draw directly from the championship-winning machine.

There are also some more subtle nods to its inspiration. The top yoke is engraved with the bike’s full designation and number, confirming its place within the limited run. The fuel tank has Bautista’s signature, and other details throughout the bike reinforce its status as a factory-built commemorative model.

Importantly, though, none of these are aftermarket additions; they are genuine features direct from Ducati.

More Than Numbers

Mechanically, the bike is based on the Panigale V4 S platform, which means it benefits from high-end components including Öhlins suspension, Brembo braking, and Ducati’s advanced electronics package.

However, in this context, the specification is just one part of this bike’s provenance. The combination of its early production number and its delivery-mileage condition places it in a very small group of surviving examples.

While many of the 219 bikes produced will have been ridden and enjoyed as intended, far fewer remain in this kind of preserved state.

Context Matters

At Bridge Classic Cars, we often talk about the importance of context when assessing a vehicle. A limited-production model is special, a low-mileage example is also special, but an early-number, effectively unused example is something that is rarely ever seen.

It is the combination of those things that ultimately decides where a vehicle sits, both in terms of collectability and long-term relevance. This bike brings both things together in a stunningly beautiful way.

A Modern Collectable

There is sometimes a perception that collectability only applies to older vehicles, but that is not necessarily the case. Modern vehicles, particularly those built to commemorate specific moments or achievements, are increasingly being recognised for their significance. When they are preserved as this one has been, they become something almost completely unique.

This Panigale V4 Bautista is still very much a high-performance bike, but it also represents a celebration of a moment in Ducati’s history, and that makes it extremely collectable.

Number 002

Ultimately, it is not just about what the bike is that means something, but also which one it is.

Out of 219 produced, this is number 002. Out of those 219 made, very few will be in this condition.

One final thought…as this bike is about to pass through auction and into new ownership, two things are likely. The first is that it will probably not be seen or be made available to the public again, and secondly, the new owner might not buy it to preserve, but to ride and enjoy.

If that is the case, this could be one of the very last factory examples ever to be seen in this condition.

That makes this bike extremely important!

This bike will be available at the Manor Park Classics April 2026 Motorcycle Auction.
