Carpet Mats

Over the past few days, Lydia has been cutting and binding the carpets for our 1963 Bentley S3. The originals were in a poor state, dirty and also covered in moth damage. She took the pattern from these and created new ones, and then bound the edges in leather which has been used on the rest of the interior.

Recovering Interior Panels

The customer has kindly supplied all the interior panels of our 1963 Bentley S3 to us so that Lydia can recover them. He has remade some of the most damaged ones using the other sides as a template.

Remaking the cardboard boot pieces was the most challenging, as Lydia had to moisten the cardboard before moulding it into shape. After making it the desired shape and replacing the wood and metal pieces, she covered it in carpet.

It’s All Golden

Our 1963 Bentley S3 Continental Coupe has been in the Bridge Classic Cars paintshop with Chris. He has been rubbing down, applying primer, and painting it this fantastic Gold colour (Sand II).

More Prep And Prime

Chris has been completing more prep work on our 1963 Bentley S3 Continental.

He rubbed the polyfan down again and then removed the panels and put them into final primer.

The car was masked up ready for final primer. It was first sealed with epoxy primer for any bare metal and then the final primer was applied.

Prep And Polyfan

Chris has had our 1963 Bentley S3 in the Bridge Classic Cars paint shop. He has been rubbing down the polyfan in preparation for more to go on.

Once this was done, Chris then applied more polyfan to make sure everything was nice and straight.

Bentley – Inspection and Repairs

Jon has now completed the inspection on our 1993 Bentley Turbo R. He’s carried out the necessary repairs which included; sorting the connections on the nearside headlight and main beam. He’s stripped the nearside door panel and repositioned the electric window switch.

The car has been taken off the ramp and a road test has been carried out.

It returned to the workshop with a belt squeal and steering is out to the right.

We have tightened the alternator belt.

The steering has been adjust and we’ve inflate all tyres to the correct pressure.

Fuel has been added and now the car is ready for the draw!

It’s Big, It’s Fast, And It’s Full of Style

Our 1993 Bentley Turbo R is now live on the Bridge Classic Cars Competitions website. For just £9.00, you have the chance of becoming the new owner of this beast of a car.

When the Turbo R was first introduced in 1985, it redefined what it meant for a car to be elegant and stylish, while still being able to excite the driver with its performance on the road.

Our Tubo R is finished in Racing Green with a Magnolia Hide interior and comes with a history file of past invoices, service records, and its owner’s manual.

Repairs And Prep

The two Chris’ have been working on our 1963 Bentley S3 Continental recently.

The valance has been repaired and the body has begun the process of panel leveling in preparation for paint.

Looking Back

It wasn’t too long ago that we went to collect our 1963 Bentley S3 and bring it back to the workshop.

Before even more progress is made on its restoration, it seems like a good time to take a quick look back at when we collected it and loaded it up onto our trailer.

Back In The Workshop

Our 1963 Bentley S3 has recently returned to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop. As you can see, from the photos below, it now looks very different to how it did a few months ago when it first arrived.

When it arrived back, Jonn had to free off the brakes. To do this, he removed the front wheels and stripped the brakes. He removed the shoes and placed them inside the car before refitting the drums and wheels.

SOLD – Our 1935 Bentley

Our 1935 Bentley Van Den Plas Saloon sold earlier this week.

After making its way to us from South Africa, it will now go on to its new home with its proud new owner.

There’s no denying that this is a beautiful classic and it comes as no surprise that it was a popular listing on Car & Classic. As excited as we are to see it leave us to be admired by another enthusiast, it will be slightly sad to not see it in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop every day.

Back Home – Shooting a 1935 Bentley Van Den Plas Sports Saloon for Auction

Here at Bridge Classic Cars, we have the rare and unique chance to deal with some of the most amazing classic and collectible cars on a near daily basis. Some are rare and iconic, others are storied and well-traveled. This 1935 Bentley Van Den Plas Sports Saloon is all of those wrapped into one.

The car belongs to a good friend of Bridge Classic Cars, John. John is a classic car enthusiast from South Africa who over the years we have developed an incredible friendship and appreciation for vintage metal with and its an absolute joy to have him make the trip over to see us. Recently, we had a shipping container filled to the brim with beautiful classics arrive at our Suffolk HQ which had been brought over by John, including this Derby Bentley.

John has kindly asked us to photograph and represent the car at auction for him here in the UK but the story of this car and its pure originality is what makes it truly stand out from the rest.

Firstly, here’s a quick recap on what a ‘Derby’ Bentley is for those who aren’t versed in early Bentley history – After the Rolls Royce takeover of Bentley in the early 1930s, the Bentley name would still retain its reputation for superb engineering, effortless style, and rock-steady reliability under its new ownership though the cars that would come to be known as Derby Bentley’s after its move from the Cricklewood home under W.O Bentley to Rolls Royce’s workshops based in Derby. Hence, ‘Derby’ Bentley’s.

Here’s what we specifically know about this car, BOL 505.

This 1935 Bentley Van Den Plas sports saloon spent its early years here in the UK under the registration BOL 505. In 1971, the car was acquired by South African Bentley enthusiast Tony White and shipped to South Africa in order to compliment his fleet of early Bentleys including a pair of 1928 4 ½ litre tourers. Soon after, the car was sold to another South African classic car enthusiast who would retain the car for the next 44 years.

It was then bought by another classic car enthusiast in South Africa who began work on the car, the previous owner to him carrying out the aesthetic restoration of the cars body as well as the overhaul of the all important straight-six engine, however due to the previous owners failing health there are no records or recollection of what work was indeed carried out.

Finished in two-tone Grey, this 1935 Bentley Van Den Plas sports saloon is a wonderful blend of sympathetic restoration and true originality. The exterior of the car is in fabulous condition, along with the engine block and engine bay being given an aesthetic restoration. In its 88-year life, it is believed the body has never left the chassis since the pair were brought together at the Derby works and must be one of only a handful to proudly wear that title.

Throughout its 52-year history in the southern hemisphere, the dry conditions have worked to preserve this beautiful British motorcar and meant that it has always been road registered with its previous owners.

The exterior of the car is in superb condition with very minimal work left to do, some of the original parts are missing such as the spare wheel, P100 headlight internals and sidelights. The interior is about as original as it comes but will require retrimming and some restorative work. The leather, although well patinated is still soft to the touch and could be kept or used to create a new interior for the car.

This is an incredible opportunity for an enthusiast of the Bentley marque or pre-war British motorcars to bring back to life, at minimal effort and with the large expenses already outlaid, a wonderful piece of British motoring history.

It’s a true pleasure and honour to be able to photograph piece of automotive history like this Derby Bentley. And it’s also a privilege for our friend and customer to ask us to represent the car at auction for him aswell.

Changing Colour

After prepping the car, Chris got to work and our Bentley is already on its way to looking great!

At Home – Our 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed at Its New Home in Scotland

Our 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed has made its way from the Bridge Classic Cars HQ here in Suffolk all the way up to Scotland with its excited new owner, Terry.

Terry won the stunning Bentley last week with his winning ticket 1630! We want to wish him many happy miles with this masterpiece in luxury and performance.

Behind The Scenes – Live Draw of the 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed

Last night, the Bridge Classic Cars team got together to find out who the fortunate new owner of our 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed was.

This week, we were joined by our friend Sam from Bruizer to help us with the new video set-up. As the clock struck 7 o’clock, we welcomed our friends to our weekly Livestream. As everyone joined in, Molly and Freddie took everyone around our amazing Bentley one last time while there were still tickets available.

After showing everyone the video of our Bentley in action, Molly, Freddie and Craig went through some of the other amazing machines we currently have in our competition building. Just like our beautiful 1968 Morris Mini MkII 850, a car we’ve all become massively fond of and proving to be massively popular with our followers, so we showed our friends around it.

Then, it was time for our new history segment where Nick goes a little bit further in-depth into some of the cars and motorcycles that we currently have in. This time, it was the history of the 1994 Ducati 750SS going back to the early 1970s.

Afterwards, Molly introduced what the team had been up to the week before visiting Knowledge Visual Technology in Oxford to try out their racing simulator but then it was time! By the time the competition closed, there were only around 400 tickets remaining on the Bentley.

With our pre-published entry list now live on website, we could find out who the lucky new owner of the 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed was using our random number generator.

Molly input the numbers for the generator to choose from and then it was down to one single click… The first number hadn’t been allocated. It took a few attempts until finally, we found it. Ticket 1630.

That number had been allocated to Terry Richardson. Terry was the winner of our 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed.

He was absolutely ecstatic when we called him. He said that he was gonna use it every day for a while once it is delivered right to his doorstep very soon!

Behind the Scenes – Shooting the 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed

The Bridge Classic Cars team have been shooting our latest competition: the 203MPH, 600BHP 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed. The absolute epitome of style and elegance married with pure power and performance.

Before anyone could take it out and drive it, it was fully checked over by the Bridge Classic Cars workshop team who have the car the green light to head up to The Hangar for filming.

As the 6-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 roared into life on the pad outside our secure storage facility, we all knew this was going to be an amazing shoot. From the first symphonious signs of life, the Bentley quietened down and become all the more civilised. The stunning anthracite paintwork danced underneath the summer sun from any angle, while its quilted beluga black leather gave the imposing long-legged GT car a cabin made for comfort as it made its way along the taxiway.

The 12-cylinder engine made its way along at little more than a whisper, gently pulling along at only a touch more than idle.

Molly was firmly behind the wheel and loving every moment. As the GT Speed made lap after lap of the filming location, you could feel it wanting to stretch its legs. Its inherent need to cover great distances, at wonderful speeds in supreme comfort is so ingrained in a car like the Continental GT. But, it’s also well-mannered and light to the touch with its controls, the linear acceleration (a characteristic of the twin-turbo W12) means that can be trusted and relied on to behave itself in a civilised everyday world.

And with all of that, we want you to experience the majesty that is the 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed. Finishing Up – Paintwork Complete on the 1969 Bentley T1

The 1969 Bentley T1 which has been in with the Bridge Classic Cars paint and body team has now been completed!

What started as a pretty standard respray on the classic Bentley quickly evolved into repairing and perfecting some previous repairs to the car which did not have the car’s best interests at heart. So, the team got to work.

After stripping down the classic Bentley in our preparation area, the team discovered a huge amount of body filler had been used on the rear quarter panels of the car to regain the shapes needed for the panel. Chris, one of our technicians, spent multiple hours just getting rid of the layers of filler to expose the raw metal buried underneath. Then, as they moved forward on the car, the front driver’s wing gave up its secret. An enormous dent/crack in the metal itself had been hidden under thick layers of filler. Before the car could be repainted, this had to be addressed.

The team managed to source a replacement wing for the iconic car. This needed some finessing and repairs but was a better starting point than the original. With this now on the car and lined up, it was back over to the paint and body team to finesse and perfect the panels and lines of the car before heading into our in-house paint booth for its first coats of primer.

Several rounds of primer, minimal filler and sanding work were done over several weeks to get the glorious Bentley back into shape. Then, it was time for colour.

The paint team perfectly matched the original Sage Green colour of the car in our mixing shop before laying it carefully and precisely across the body as it would have been done when the car was originally built. Taking the same care and attention to detail, if not more, than her original builders to ensure this T1 looked perfect. Colour sanding, polishing, more sanding, more polishing. All necessary to give the deep richness needed for a colour as synonymous with a classic Bentley as Sage Green.

Then, the team began the meticulous and precise task of masking up the Bentley to have its signature Coach Line applied down the lengths of the car. With that final piece done and the car put back together, it will soon be time for her to head home.

Back in Place – Refitting the 1969 Bentley T1 Interior and Fixing an Electrical Fault

The Bridge Classic Cars restoration teams have been working together to get the 1969 Bentley T1 back together.

The trim team have been focusing on the inside of the classic Bentley. Firstly, the team refit the repaired kick panels into the footwell of the luxury 4 door saloon. Then, the team began work of fitting up the sun visors and then refitting the interior window trims. Finally, the team began putting the large, plush rear seat into the car to finish off the rear of the car.

Meanwhile, the restoration technicians have been working on tracking down an electrical fault on the car. After doing multiple electrical and mechanical tests, our technicians narrowed it down to a bad connection within the selector switch of the car. After cleaning up the connectors and the plug, the team then went to replicate the issue and it had fixed the fault.

Delicate Touch – Painting the Iconic Coach Stripe on the 1969 Bentley T1

The iconic coach stripe which adorns the lengths of many classic Bentley’s has been applied to the 1969 Bentley T1 by the Bridge Classic Cars in-house paint team.

Chris, one of our painters, carefully measured and masked the coach lines along the T1. The whole car was then safely covered in order to lay down the correct vivid yellow stripe which runs underneath the brightwork.

The paint was then given enough time to cure in our in-house booth/oven before the car was moved into the preparation area to be finished and polished.

Refit and Repair – Working on the Boot and Kick Panels of the 1969 Bentley T1

The 1969 Bentley T1 which is being worked on by the Bridge Classic Cars paint and body team, have been joined by the in-house trim team to work on getting the classic Bentley back together.

The trim team worked on refitting and renewing the boot carpets onto the upper part of the deck lid. Along with the carpet, the team have installed the boot seal onto the lip of the boot opening.

With this part of the work complete, the trim team took a couple of pieces of the interior of the Bentley up to the trim shop to work on. The kick panels are in need of repairing and then will be fit back into the car.

Refit – Putting the Windows on the 1969 Bentley T1 Back Together

The windows in the 1969 Bentley T1 have been getting built back up and refit into the doors by the restoration team at Bridge Classic Cars.

With the car freshly out of paint, the team very carefully have begun the process of getting everything back onto the car.

The mechanisms, glass and brightwork have all been reattached in place and tested to make sure they’re perfectly aligned with no issues binding or grabbing.

Remade – Making a New Window Sill for the 1969 Bentley T1

The team in the Bridge Classic Cars paint and body shop has been working on refitting the trims to the 1969 Bentley T1 after its respray.

Whilst fitting the window retainers/sills, the team found that one was heavily corroded and damaged. So, the team made a new piece using the original as a template to work from and fit into the handmade classic car.

With this piece now done and fitted into the car, the team can carry on getting the 1969 Bentley T1 back together.

First Colour – 1969 Bentley T1 has First Round of Colour

The beautiful and elegant 1969 Bentley T1 has been in the Bridge Classic Cars in-house paint booth to have its first layers of paint applied.

Chris and the paint team have worked hard to get the body of the classic Bentley into perfect shape before it headed into our paint booth. The Bentley is being repainted in the original Sage Green, which has been hand-matched by our paint department to get the colour just as it would have originally been done back in the late 1960s.

With this round of painting complete, the car will be taken into the preparation area and prepared to be finished.

Sanded Back – Preparing the 1969 Bentley T1 for Paint

The 1969 Bentley T1 has been in the paint preparation area of the Bridge Classic Cars restoration workshop to have the latest round of primer work sanded back.

The car has had the final stage of primer sanding done by hand in order to get the surface in perfect condition for the full respray of the classic Bentley. Mauro, one of our technicians, carefully worked his way around the entire car making sure to get into every curve and recess of the body.

With this now complete, the car could be cleaned down ahead of heading into the spray booth.

Begin Again – Getting 1969 Bentley T1 Ready for Paint

The 1969 Bentley T1 has been moved from the Bridge Classic Cars body shop into our in-house paint shop to begin the process of getting the classic Bentley resprayed in its original Green.

Chris has been working on getting the panels of the classic Bentley reshaped to make sure each piece is in the best shape and appearance before even the first coats of paint hit the body. This latest round of guide coat is so the team can make sure each piece is level and flat before the process of colour begins.

Reshaping – Body Work on the 1969 Bentley T1

The 1969 Bentley T1 is in the Bridge Classic Cars body shop to be reworked and perfected before it goes into the in-house paint booth.

The body shop team have been working on sanding and minimally filling the panels on the classic Bentley to ensure each body line and panel seamlessly blends into the next from the front to the back of the car.

Once the preparations are completed, the car will go back into the paint booth and then the team will move onto the next process.

First Steps – 1969 Bentley T1 in Primer

The 1969 Bentley T1 has been moved from the Bridge Classic Cars body shop into the paint shop to begin its journey towards its full respray.

The team at Bridge Classic Cars have been working incredibly hard to carry out the rust repairs on this beautiful classic Bentley. With those now completed properly for the car, it was moved so our body shop could begin to prepare it for its appointment with the spray booth.

With the body prepared and cleaned down, our paint Chris wheeled the Bentley into position and began laying down the first coats of primer onto its newly reworked body. This layer will be used as a guide for the body shop technicians to see which areas need to be worked on to get the panels perfect before the full respray on the car.

The Smallest of Details – Rust Repairs on the C Pillar of the 1969 Bentley T1

The 1969 Bentley T1 in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop for restoration, has had more metalwork done to get the car back into a better condition.

This time, our technicians found a small hole in the driver’s side C pillar which had to be filled properly. This had previously been filled with body filler and painted over but our team decided that it needed to be fixed properly before the project moves forward.

Dave, carefully filled the hole and ground it back to shape the weld into place so as to make it easier for the body team when it comes to the minimal filler work before the car is completely repainted.
