Stellantis has launched a recall affecting a wide range of diesel vehicles across Europe due to a potential issue with the camshaft chain in certain 1.5 BlueHDi engines.
The recall targets cars produced between October 2017 and January 2023 under the Peugeot, Citroën, Opel/Vauxhall, DS, and Fiat brands. According to Stellantis, some of these vehicles may suffer from premature wear of the camshaft chain, which can cause abnormal engine noise and, in extreme cases, chain breakage.
In France alone, 636,000 vehicles are affected. Belgian media reports an additional 117,000 cars impacted in Belgium, though Stellantis has not provided an overall figure for Europe.
The issue involves a 1.5-litre diesel engine originally developed by PSA before its merger with Fiat Chrysler to form Stellantis in 2021. While no accidents or injuries have been linked to the fault, the company is taking precautionary steps.
The fix includes a software update and, where necessary, an oil change. Stellantis has also introduced a specialised diagnostic tool that can detect early signs of chain wear by analysing engine noise.
To support affected owners, Stellantis is offering to cover 100% of parts and labour costs for eligible repairs. This extended policy applies to qualifying work carried out between 1st January 2023 and 30th June 2025, provided the vehicle has been maintained in line with brand recommendations.
