The Bridge Classic Cars team aren’t just passionate about a particular car, we love all of them the same – like this one, our 1973 Mercedes 250. This has come in to our Suffolk HQ as a non-runner so the workshop team are going to be getting it in, and up on a ramp to get to the bottom of why it doesn’t start and also a thorough check over.

Once we could get the classic Mercedes into our restoration, our restoration technician Jon could then begin checking over the car thoroughly. Here’s what he found:

”Carry out appraisal. Remove front bumper for repair. Replace number plate screws. Rear x4 5mm screws which we don’t keep. So cut some bolts to length and grind heads small and round and cut a slot in top. Use yellow number plate screw caps and rescure rear number plate . Remove stereo and all wiring. Remove speakers from pacel shelf and wiring. Inflate spare and check tools. Remove rear axle breather clean out and refit. Check axle oil, ok. Check brakes. Pedal pumps up as if require a bled. Brakes seem to operate. Bleed all brakes and top up fluid. Pedal now good and all brakes operate. Refit wheels and torque up. Refit wheel trims.”

After thoroughly check through the car, Jon could begin to carry out the various repairs which he had highlighted in the appraisal stage.

”Remove shelf from under nearside dash. Remove washer bottle and wire brush rust from mounting and hoover up mess. Check washer pump. 12v when activated but pump won’t operate. Remove power steering return hose and drain reservoir. Cut new pipe to length and fit with new hose clips. Fit mounting clamps and modify bulkhead clamp so as not to squash pipe when secure. Clean out reservoir and fill with new oil. Run engine and bleed system and top up when finished. Modify new battery hold down clamp and fit withnew nut sand washers. Start up and store till extra parts arrive”

”Refit both front seat back trims at bottom edge. Remove distributor cap and HT leads. Remove spark plugs. Cyl 3 and 5 hard to remove. Run rethread tool in each and all ok. Carry out compression test. OK. Put in new spark plugs and gapped correctly. Adjust and set points and refit cap and leads. Try and start and she fired up and ran.”
