Repairing the 1967 Austin Healey 3000

Following the cars appraisal by the Bridge Classic Cars reastoration team, the team have begun to work on repairing and recommissioning the 1967 Austin Healey 3000. Our technician Jon has been working his way to getting the car back on the road for its owner with his attention currently turned to the fuel system on the classic British sports car.

‘Raise and quickly check for leaks, all OK. Get off ramp. Inflate tyres and knock up wheels. Fit new rad cap and top up coolant. Choke cable broke when I pulled it out so order new. Get started and take outside. Runs better now old fuel used in float owls. Set idle and carry out road test when new hoke cable arrives a nd fitted. Fuel guage reading 3/4 but I drained tank and only put in 10ltrs so order new tank sender also. Unable to fit new choke able inner as end frayed and won’t slide through. Use new cable completely remove rev counter. Access choke cable and eventually get out. Measure cable and cut to length. Fit new cable and feed through to engine bay. Cable end frayed again and unable to get it into clamp. Order another cable. Empty boot and hoover mess up from top of fuel tank. Strip and remove fuel tank sender. Confirm seized. Inspect in tank and can see water in fuel. Strip and remove tank. Drain remaining fuel from tank. Tank rusty inside. Inspect fuel and found brown water in fuel. Tank needs sorting or new tank needed. Tape cable end up to stop freeing when fitting. Fit and measure. Remove and trim outer cable. Bend metal piece behind fash clear of choke cable an secure cable. Drill out end under bonnet and feed cable through. Remove cable a d remove spacer washer and refit cable. Secure. Refit speedoand se ure. Feed cable through clamp a d refit bra ket to bulkhead. Secure clamp. Check choke,operation. Adjust cables at arb ends and retry. Better but coils hang up a bit lube and test when fuel tank fitted.’

‘New tank arrived. Prep for fitting. Clean boot floor and apply neoprene pieces to contact areas. Prep and fit new fuel tank sender. Fit tank to boot and slide I to position. Fuel pipe connection on new tank setback slightly compared with old tank so will need to modify fuel pipe to fit tomorrow. Fit and secure tank straps and filler neck connect wire to sender. Unable to modify old pope to fit so order new fuel pipe from tank to pump. Trim choke cable and shrink wrap end. Fuel pipe arrived. Bend and pick up to car. Cut pipe to aid fitting and shaping. Mount to pump and secure. End and fit to tank. Align and join with rubber hose. Secure with P-clips and paint black.’
