Progress on the 1936 Fraser Nash BMW 319

The 1936 Fraser Nash BMW 319 has been moving along steadily here at the Bridge Classic Cars restoration HQ in Suffolk. Our technician Jon has been working his way through the various jobs to do on the car. After stripping down the rear diff and drivetrain on the car, he began the process of getting this incredible pre-war sports racer back on the road once more.

‘Rebuild rear axle. Mount diff Iin axle casing and seal up with new gasket. 3 bolts won’t pull tight. Tap out and fit new bolts. Paint diff in shutz to match axle. Clean u bolts and saddles. Fit axle and se ure. Remount brake pipes. Fit backplates. Seal and refit half shafts and bearings. Cable tie handbrake cables and brake pipes to axle. Refit propshaft.’

‘Refit front hubs and drums without brakes and refit wheels. Refit rear drums and wheels to make mobile. Fit spacing washers to nearside rear shackle and tighten. Fill rear axle with new oil. Start to strip and remove head.’

‘Continue to strip engine to remove cylinder head. Manifolds off, water pump off. Rocker shaft and push rods. Remove head and Inspect.’

‘Clean and inspect block and head. Start cleaning parts ready.’

‘Remove engine. Drain fluids and remove all wiring, dynamo, starter and radiator. Remove tunnel and access gearbox bolts. Tie support across chassis to support gearbox when engine removed. Undo mounts and wrap straps ready to let. Set up crane and with Johns help remove engine.’

Remove components that will be required for another engine. Clutch and flywheel off and remove pins and straps that hold starter.
