Our restoration technician Jon has been working his way through the PDI checklist of our 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTi here at the Bridge Classic Cars Suffolk workshop as well as a few repairs on this classic hot hatch.
‘Raise and inspect. Wire wheel both lower front suspension arms. Mask up wheels and hubs ready to paint. Underseal lower arms and engine sump. Lower and start repairs. Tape up temp guage wiring to sensor where insulation been cut. Unmask wheels etc. Investigate why bootjot locking. Remove panel and inspect. Found lock needs to be in a centra position to be locked. Lube and test, ok. Refit panel. Investigate temp guage not working. Strip and remove instrument cluster.’
‘With cluster on ench start testing pcb etc. Check continuity across temp guage and fuel guage and from voltage stabiliser. Fuel guage works fine so voltage stabiliser working fine. Continuity ok. Undo guage nuts to PCB and found loose. Tighten and plug cluster back into car and test. Short out sensor wiring and guage reads full. Refit cluster component testing as I go, to make function correctly. Refit stereo cage securely and refit stereo and test. Run up and test guage. Find wheel tool and torque wheel nuts. Carry out road test guage not working inreal world situation. Return and test again. Short out sender wiring and guage works, pointing to sender faulty.’
