Pete has been working on our 1980 MG Midge. The car has undergone further underside cleaning and brake renewal. Service items for the suspension have been ordered. The braking system is now fully assembled with new front calipers, seals, and pads, while the hubs have been refurbished, and wheel bearings checked and refitted. At the rear, new cylinders have been installed, and the drums have been shot-blasted and painted. All brake lines have been inspected and cleaned. The underside has been blacked, though a small repair patch still requires welding.
The rear leaf spring bushings have been replaced, with mounts and shackles refreshed, and new hardware has been fitted where rusted components were removed. Floors have been treated where parts were removed. The front upper arm bushings, which had collapsed, have also been replaced with new hardware where possible. Anti-corrosion grease has been applied to prolong component life and facilitate future replacement, as all bolts and rubber bushings were seized.
The ignition system has been serviced with new Champion copper-core spark plugs, a new set of points, and a condenser. The rotor arm tip has been cleaned. The old engine oil has been drained, and the vehicle is awaiting an oil filter and fan belt to complete the service.
A rotten section was cut out and repaired, with spot welds along the seam and seam welds along the edges. The area has been seam-sealed and undercoated throughout.
Steel components have been stripped and sandblasted, then painted and reassembled as far as possible while awaiting further parts. Minor solder repairs have been made to the brake light switch due to deteriorated contacts, and continuity was tested before refitting.
New cork and neoprene gaskets have been fabricated for the cover panel and its mounting points where it bolts to the car’s body.
