The cyber attack that stopped Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) production in September is now expected to cost an estimated £1.9 billion, making it the most financially damaging cyber incident in UK history

According to researchers at the Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC), the impact of the attack has affected around 5,000 businesses in JLR’s supply chain. Production at multiple sites, including Solihull, Halewood, and Wolverhampton, was halted for five weeks from 1st September, and a full recovery isn’t expected until January 2026.

The estimated £1.9 billion cost includes both JLR’s losses as well as the wider impact across its supplier network and local economies. This includes industries such as logistics, hospitality, and other services that rely on JLR’s day-to-day operations.

While the exact nature of the attack is still not known, the CMC believes JLR may have suffered a more severe breach than simple data theft. Ransomware and wiper attacks, where systems are locked or data is permanently destroyed, have much longer recovery times.

It’s also worth noting that the CMC’s figures do not account for any potential ransom payment that may have been made, which could add tens of millions more to the total.
