Ipswich Town Women had a successful return to Portman Road on Sunday, with a 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle, with a record-breaking attendance of 10,807.

Goals from Lucy O’Brien, Natasha Thomas and Sophie Peskett gave the ITFC Women a well-deserved three points.

Just two minutes after kickoff, Thomas sent in a low cross that Plymouth keeper Lily Felgate couldn’t hold onto, and O’Brien was quickest to react, slotting home the rebound to give the Blues the lead.

They nearly doubled their lead 16 minutes in when Summer Hughes set up O’Brien on the edge of the box, but her powerful effort was saved by Felgate.

Town’s second came in the 25th minute. This time it was Peskett who found space on the right, delivering a brilliant cross that Thomas met with a header from close range.

Megan Wearing came close to adding a third before the break. However, her header from an O’Brien corner hit the top of the bar. At the other end, keeper Natalia Negri didn’t have too much to do, with Town dominating possession and chances.

In the second half, Peskett made it three at the 57-minute mark.

Plymouth’s afternoon got worse at 80 minutes when Panagiota Papaioannou was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a foul on Ruby Seaby.

The visitors did manage a consolation a couple of minutes later when Charlotte Whitmore intercepted a loose pass from Negri and shot the ball into an empty net from a distance, but it was too little, too late with the match ending 3 – 1 to Ipswich Town Women.

It was also great to see another local female role model at the game as Lydia Walmsey had her Porsche race car in the Fan Zone for visitors to take a closer look at.
