I was fortunate enough to be at the very first H&H Classics auction held at Kelham Hall on 10th September. Not only was it the first H&H auction at Kelham Hall, it was also my first time at a car auction and, as it turned out, it’s set the bar extremely high for any future auctions I find myself attending.

The headline sale was, obviosuly, the 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster which, with all fees included, sold for £761,875. That’s a decent amount above its top estimate of £750,000. I had already heard about this car and read its story prior to the auction so I was really keen to see it up close for myself. Seeing the bids creep up first hand was a fanatstic experience for me and one I think will take some beating.

In total, 62 cars were for sale, along with a selection of automobilia. Final sales were over £2 million with bids being placed from all over the world including Europe, the U.S., Singapore, and Australia.

Another car that performed very well was the 1968 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Limousine. It sold for £57,375, which was more than £22,000 over its lower estimate. It’s from the first year of production and one of only 374 made so clearly a very special car.

Some other good results included:

  • 1966 Ford Mustang V8 4.6 SVT ‘Notchback’ – £32,062
  • 1973 BMW E9 3.0 CSi – £55,125
  • 1973 Jensen Interceptor III – £29,812

All three comfortably cleared their lower estimates as they found their new homes.

I feel like I also have to mention the Austin J40 Pedal Car, which sold for £3,900. This was £900 over its estimate. I found it quite exciting to see that sell and then, a couple of days later, see lots of the pedal cars at Goodwood Revival.

The next H&H auction is at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton. I’m already looking forward to seeing what’s on offer at that one.
