A recent arrival to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop has been given to our restoration technician Jon to get running and appraise after years of laying dormant. Jon has a list of things which he follows in resurrecting classic cars which he’s applied to our 1972 Austin 1800 to get it running and then to begin to wake the car back to life carefully and methodically.
‘Go round to car and attempt to start. Distributor cap centre electrode has no continuity through cap. Borrow cap from MGB and fit to car. Try to start and it fired up fine. Wants to stall at lower revs. Drive round to workshop. Found servo pipe missing and engine slowed – vacuum leak. Make pipe up and fit to pipe and servo. Run up much better. Adjust idle and drive round car park. Fit new second hand rad cap.OK but brakes a bit temperamental.’
