The Bridge Classic Cars restoration workshop have been busy recommissioning the 1956 Land Rover Series 1 here at our Suffolk HQ. Our technician Jon has been working his way methodically and meticulously through the various systems of the classic off-roader to get it back on the road.

”Fuel pump. Strip and remove old pump. Lower mountng plate to access bolts. Remove union to reuse but pipe connection to small. Cut small piece of 8mm copper fuel pipeand flare 1 end to fit union. Fit new pump to car and secure. Connect wires and pipes and test. Carb leaking. Runs but flat performance. Bring back in and strip and remove carb.”

‘Remove carb. Strip and clean. Blow out and reassemble. Refit to car and make all connections.’

‘Run up and take outside. Warm up and adjust mixture and idle speed. Refit air filter and connect intake pipe. Ignition light won’t extinguish. Bring back in and check charge rate. 12.3v. Suspect regulator issue.

‘Carry out repairs during inspection. Attend to wiper motor nearside. Found poor connection. Fit new terminal to power wire and connect. Clean connection on body and test. Works. Try to get washers working. Clean out bottle. Blow through pipes. Remove jet that is broken. Prime pipes but still won’t pump. New manual type pump required. Check lights. Raise and check underneath. Check axle levels. Grease all point but prop ripples missing. Drill and fit P-clips to offside chassis rail to secure fuel pipe. Trim off inner wing offside as storing drop arm had been catching. Check and inflate tyres. Remove spare wheel for refurbishment.’

‘Drain oil and filter. Clean out filter housing. Wire brush alloy engine parts to get rid of coolant corrosion at pipe joints. Remove spark plugs, clean and regap. Refit sump bung with new seal and secure. Waiting for parts.’

Fit regulator. Strip and remove ove panel on bulkhead again to access regulator fixings. Remove old regulator and fit new. Disconnect each wire and connect to new regulator. Refit panel and secure. Fit new wiper blades. Start removing old door seals on offside. Drill out rivets.

‘Continue door seals. Each seal has a metal strip inside. Remove metal strips. Clean and prep. Cut new rubber to length and slide metal strip inside. Rivet Into place. Repeat for next seal.’

‘Continue door seal replacement. Finish offside and then move to nearside. Remove old seal section by section. Align metal strip and slide inside new rubber and cut to length. Rivet in place.’
