Diagnostics and Final Work on the 1991 Jaguar XJS V12

As the team work on getting the 1991 Jaguar XJS V12 back onto the road stronger than ever. As the Bridge Classic Cars restoration team work on getting the V12 GT car ready for its excited owner, they have had to go through and fix a few faults as the team begin to test the car.

‘Carry out road test. Idle low when cold. Drives fine when warm but idle speed high when hot. New fault code appeared for fuel mix. Check round for vacuum leaks etc. Found vac solenoid with broken pipe. Remove solenoid and repair. Drill out and glue in piece of brake pipe. Disconnect t battery. Refit solenoid and connect.’

Remove purge valve and test on bench. Clean and lube until it opens and closes ok. Refit. Reconnect battery, fault code gone. Run up and road test again. Runs OK. Idle still high. Adjust air bleed screw on auxiliary air valve but doesn’t alter. Sure valve seized. Strip amd remove AAV.

‘Order new valve as its seized inside. Strip valve and see. Clean out and lube and test. Wax plunger working when heated. Assemble valve and test. Seems to work now. Make new gasket. Refit to car.

Secure valve. Old pipe split so find alternative andfit. Run up and see. Still high but not fully warmed up. Test.’

Remove old idle control valve, remove both rubber hoses and cleaned old gasket and silicone from mating surface, put sleant on new gasket and fit new idle control valve and fit new top hose as well, refit all hoses with new jubilee clips, test to see if it works, Warm car up to operating temperature With car running adjust idle control valve and and get idle down from 1200 to 600 rpm and chech the cars creep as well.

‘After air con regased we looked into why the compressor wasnt working. The compressor wasnt wired up so the loom was located on the car and reconnected. Power was checked to the compressor and no power was found. The relay was then checked and a terminal was found to be corroded this was replaced and relay cleaned as terminals were green. The compressor was then tried again. And it keep kicking in and out. So either the compressor is faulty or the pressure sensor on the compressor.’
