DB6 Appraisal And Strip Down

Pete has carried out an initial inspection of our beautiful 1969 Aston Martin DB6 Volante, noting that all four fitted tyres date back to 2008/2009 and will require replacement. The spare tyre is a different size, measuring 185/15 compared to the fitted 205/70/15 tyres, with its age unknown.

The first assessment found the car to be in fair overall condition as it undergoes a full concours restoration. Nick has already begun documenting the entire process with a detailed photographic story as the car is stripped and restored.

A preliminary test drive showed that the vehicle performed well, with most ancillary items functioning as expected. The engine delivered the anticipated performance but had a slight misfire. Further investigation revealed one spark plug was sooty, though initial compression tests indicated consistent readings across all cylinders, with variations within 10 psi. This suggests the engine is in good order, with further evaluations to follow.

The gearbox performed as expected, though there was some difficulty selecting second gear, and the clutch felt heavier than ideal for a vehicle of this calibre.

Underside inspections revealed minimal structural concerns, with corrosion primarily affecting the external bodywork and wheel arches. Wear and tear were noted on various components, along with general grime. Additionally, the rear check straps were found to be allowing the prop shaft to contact the tunnel, requiring attention.

The interior showed signs of ageing but retained a characterful patina. The driver’s seat had significant cushion collapse, with the springs becoming noticeable when seated. Various dials and switches were tested, with some functioning correctly while others either failed to operate or displayed incorrect readings.

Overall, the vehicle appears well-maintained but requires significant work to be restored to a condition even better than its original factory standards.

Work has now started on disassembly in preparation for a complete overhaul, starting with the removal of external trim and lighting from the rear forward. An initial inspection of the faulty roof suggests a likely issue with a sticky solenoid, which will require further investigation. Additionally, part of the roof has started to detach from the body, which will need addressing during reassembly.
