Repairing the Jensen’s fibreglass body

The fibreglass bodyshell of our 1957 Jensen 541R arrived to us in a pretty sorry state, covered entirely in miniature cracks and blisters that have developed over time.

Repairing the fibreglass body is quite a time consuming task but one that is a necessity in ensuring the finest results with the restoration. Any imperfections at this stage will be heightened as we progress with the restoration and every care and detail is required with this section of the rebuild.

A Corvette powered Jensen

Our Jensen 541R has now been fitted with the newly built Corvette Engine and brand new 5 speed Tremec gearbox.

It provides a tough and durableย mirror-like gloss finish with excellent chemical and solvent resistance.

Designed for the coating of commercial vehicles, trailers, chassis, military, plant machinery and agriculturalย equipment, the fully cured coating is hard wearing and durable and demonstrates excellent resistance to weathering.

Various parts for various cars have now been stripped, cleaned, prepped and coated in our 2k mix.

Coopercraft International – Uprated brakes for our Jensens

Established in 1991, Coopercraft very quickly earned an excellent reputation for restoring and maintaining classic cars, in particular Jaguars.

Now known as Coopercraft International the business is owned and managed by Peter and Debbie Cooper, who continue to research, develop and produce new products to add to their popular range of uprated braking products. We offer a full fitting service in conjunction with our classic maintenance and competition preparation.

This brake kit has been designed to replace the original Dunlop cylinder assemblies, easily fitted to the original carriers and retaining your original handbrake mechanism.ย ย  The cylinders incorporateย  a modern style seal and piston and are designed to work in conjunction with our uprated front brake kits.

They are available in steel with a smart zinc plated finish and stainless steel pistons, also available as anodised billet aluminium cylinders and pistons for competition use, complete with a set of pads.

Braided stainless steel brake hosesย andย higher friction brake padsย are also available to further increase the performance levels.

These kits will be fitted to both our 1960 and 1957 Jensen 541R projects.

Our Jensen’s Corvette engine with up-rated camshaft

We are progressing very well with our 1957 Jensen 541R’s Corvette engine as we dial in the camshaft. Our engine is having an up rated camshaft fitted so Ady is currently working on rebuilding with the new upgraded specifications.

Here we are adjusting the valve timing.

V8 Corvette engine reassembly

Ady is now reassembling the V8 Corvette engine to be fitted into our 1957 Jensen 541R (chassis #328).

The block has been refaced, the bores have been honed and we have fitted new pistons with piston rings. Now the engine has been painted we can continue on with the re-assembly.

Brand new fuel tank pickups

Our brand new fuel tank pickups have arrived this morning from Chris and the guys at Four Ashes Garage. Because of the rarity and complexity in the fuel tank pickups, our old units have been returned to Chris for a future rebuild.

Who are Four Ashes Garage

They are a family owned leading independent Aston Martin Specialist with a combined experience of over 100 years on Aston Martins, based near Stratford-upon-Avon in the Heart of England, the Company has beenย owned by Jean Moss and Chris Adams since January 2003.

Jean is the daughter in law of Four Ashesย Founder Jack Moss and widow of Michael Moss, Jack’s son who died in 1982,ย  Chris Adams was aย family friend of Jack and family before working at Four Ashes from the early 1970’s when he joined as an apprentice technician, a proper technician with 5 years extensive training (5 years at college on day release & evenings, hard work!! ) on engines, gearboxes, suspension, brakes, axles, bodywork & vehicle refinishing.

Chris is also long term partner now husband of Jean, Chris helped with vehicle repairs from an early age (6!) withย his father’s haulage business before working at Four Ashes and has run his own workshop in between Four Ashes stints, specialising in high performance cars including many Aston’s, racing of classic cars and rallying, eventually involving Works type Opel Manta 400’s in the Republic of Ireland.

Chris rebuilt his 1st Aston cylinder head when just turned 17, by 18 he was rebuilding 40% of the Aston engines that came through Four Ashes hands, including all of theย race engines for MYT 625, the Racing DB2 that the garage owned, which is now owned by Chris and Jean.

They have been servicing, rebuilding, restoring and racing Aston Martinย cars for well over 40 years, Chris has nearly 44 years experience with the marque.

Our Jensen chassis have now been painted

Both of our Jensen 541R chassis’ have now been painted inย POR15 Top Coat Chassis Coat Black. In the new year we will be able to start work on reassembling the chassis’, to get them back on their wheels.

POR15 Top Coat in Chassis Black (was Chassis Coat Black) is a direct to metal coating designed to work incredibly well in all applications where there is a need to preserve substrates susceptible to corrosion

Chassis Coat Black paint has a smooth, satiny semi-gloss finish, and is probably more correct as original for under hood and chassis components for cars produced in the USA from the early 1950’s to today.

POR15 Top Coat can be applied directly to metal substrates, with no need for a primer or undercoat, and is formulated to form a robust barrier that sheds moisture to provide long lasting protection.

POR-15 Top Coat has excellent adhesion and when used over POR15 Rust Preventive Paint the products create a system works to provide a permanent barrier to corrosion.

  • Non porous and will not crack, chip, or peel
  • Amazing scratch and abrasion resistance
  • Not sensitive to UV light
  • Can be applied over POR-15 or other paints.

Refurbishing the Jensen 541R (#328) dials

The dials that arrived in our Jensen 328 were not correct and the customer wished to have them changed for this set. These will now make their way to Speedy Cables to join the many other sets of ours they currently have to be fully stripped down and rebuilt.

Amendments have been made to both Jensen 541R chassis’

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our team have had a crazy busy few days preparing both Jensen chassis’ ready for paint. A few amendments needed to be made prior to paintwork but as well as these configurations the media blasting has uncovered a couple of unexpected imperfections in the structure which need to be addressed.

Rot has unfortunately found it’s way in to the rear of chassis 328 so these areas have had to be cut away and metalwork refitted.

As well as this we have re-applied metalwork into the rear section behind the rear seats, we’ve moved the battery tray and brackets which were initially in the wrong place and work on a couple of areas at the front which required some attention.

Some similar areas needed to be worked on but we also had to make improvements to the rear arches which required extensions.

The welding work on both chassis’ are now complete so tomorrow we can start on the preparation and paint.

Jensen radiators ready for refurb…

Here we have a set of radiators all ready for the trip over to Sheldrake & Wellsย in Ipswich for their complete overhaul. In amongst the collection we have the radiators from our 1957 Jensen 541R and 1960 Jensen 541R.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our 1957 Jensen 541R (chassis 328) metalwork has now been sorted ready for the trip to Wyatt Polishing in Thetford. Tony and the team at Wyatt will now strip and prepare the metalwork ready for the re-chroming process to begin.

This process can take around 8-10 weeks but as we are not in an immediate rush for these parts we are somewhat ahead of ourselves on this part of the restoration project.

Brian has also successfully stripped, cleanedย and repainted both the pedal boxes and heater boxes from both our Jensens.

 

 

Working on the Corvette engine

Ady is now actively working on the restoration of the Corvette V8 engine that will be married up to our 1957 Jensen 541R.

The block has successfully been machined and the unleaded conversion has been carried out with the 3 angled valve seats – 75′, 45′ to 30′

 

Chassis’s and Parts ready for media blasting

By cleaning shells right back to bare metal, you can see exactly what condition the metalwork is in, and therefore what work needs to be done for the best restoration.

After a few weeks at sea John and Brian took the trip down to Southampton earlier in the week to collect our latest arrival, our 1957 Jensen 541R, chassis 440.

…the one with the Corvette engine!

One of 3 Jensen 541’s we are currently in the process of building. We have some very exciting times ahead as we see the progression.

Hello Jensen enthusiasts,

I’m new to the club and I’ll start with stating that I joined this club with the intent of finding a buyer whose affinity for Jensens will hopefully restore this one to its former glory. I stumbled into the opportunity to buy it 2 years ago by chance while I was working. Basically the previous owner died and he had been storing it in a garage bay since the 1970’s. The owner of the garage bay obtained the Jensen as a form of debt settlement from the family. The moment I saw it I knew it was a rare car and bought it and started renting the garage bay it’s currently stored in. I would not have considered purchasing it had it not been for the amount of restoration that had been done to it. Once I uncovered the chassis number it led me to this clubs site and ultimately the back story of how it ended up in Harwich, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA.

After a year or so of searching for a way to obtain a title I’ve given up my dream of restoring it. I’ve reached out to a few potential buyers in the states but I feel like this car would be in better hands if it went to someone who truly appreciates Jensens. The only downside is the car is completely apart and looks like the engine mounts were moved when it was converted to american muscle in the 1960’s. From what I can tell the majority of the parts in my garage bay are from the original build. The upholstery is in rough shape but it does say London on it so it looks pretty authentic to me. Most of the trim is intact but it is missing a front and rear windshield and one of the side glass pieces. The gauges and wiring harness are original and there are many totes and crates containing things I don’t even recognize. I was thinking of keeping the engine because its’ a 1960’s corvette 327 which is rare on its own. I figured if someone was going to restore this Jensen they would probably want to put in its original stock engine, but if the price is right I would be willing to let it go.
