Festival of speed roars in to Kincardine Castle

The wait is finally over as Deeside’s first speed hillclimb course went to Kincardine Castle today; Sunday, August 21.

Four hundred cars took part, with 130 hillclimb cars and bikes, including the 1956 Ecurie Ecosse D-type Jaguar which has just won Car of the Day at the Ballater Week parade. Motorcycling legend and eight times Isle of Man TT winner Charlie Williams was also there on his 1974 Maxton Yamaha.

A broad cross-section of more than 60 static cars were displayed, including a Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F50 and AC Le Mans Coupe, Colin Macrae’s MKII Ford Escort rally car, and the Charlie Bang slingshot dragster.

Eighteen car clubs with 240 cars attended, representing Ferrari, Ford, MG, Aston Martin and Subaru, to name a few. Tesla had a special display of their Model S electric luxury cars.

Passenger rides on our off-roading courses come highly recommended. The Landrover experience offered a thrilling ride tackling the Rocky Road, the Toblerone and Willie’s Drop. A scenic off-road safari, run by the Buchan Off-Road Drivers Club.

The Clan BMX Stunt Team were there to take centre stage with their death-defying stunt shows throughout the day. And our festival marketplace in the walled garden showcased food, drink, crafts, beauty products and local businesses.

There were refreshments provided alongside the castle’s own pop-up cafe. For kids, a climbing tower, carousels and bouncy castles. The finale was the Westburn finance Soapbox Derby allowing gravity, along with a few twists and jumps, to prove that thrilling does not necessarily mean engine-powered.

The event supported the charities Children 1st, Help for Heroes and Mission Motorsport.

Piston Heads meet up at Snetterton

Thanks to our good friend Tony at Wyatt Polishing for the great pictures of last week’s Snetterton race meet. The guys at Piston Heads often meet up to do a few laps of the track and Tony went down to take a look at all the impressive cars on show.

Mohamed Hadid  took his taste for the finer things in life up a notch or two with his latest purchase on Friday afternoon.

The eccentric father of supermodels Gigi and Bella treated fiancée Shiva Safai to a spin in his new set of wheels, a Charles Morgan 3-Wheeler, during an appearance in Beverly Hills on Friday afternoon.

Boasting a noisy twin filter engine the unconventional forest green car ensured Mohamed commanded attention while driving close to his Los Angeles home.

The Jordanian-American real estate developer added an authentic flourish by sporting a pair of old-fashioned goggles before taking to the road.

Evidently pleased with his latest purchase, Mohamed later posted a short video designed to showcase the three-wheeled car – which can reach speeds of 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds – with followers on Instagram.

Captioning the short clip, he wrote: ‘It’s that Sunday drive with my lady Shiva. Even though it’s Friday.’

His fiancée later shared her own snap, a selfie of the pair enjoying a leisurely cruise in the open top vehicle alongside the caption: ‘Out with my boo.’

Retailing between £31,450 and £34,995, the Morgan 3-Wheeler comes with tasteful leather seats and a spacious, cockpit shaped interior.

With its three wheel design experts claim driving the vehicle, which has been updated with 21st century technology, requires ‘the mentality of a motorcyclist.’

Mohamed’s outing comes months after he was charged with three misdemeanor criminal counts related to a megamansion project in the upscale Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The charges against Mohamed included illegal use of land, building without a permit and failure to comply with orders from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

Construction on the 30,000-square-foot project nicknamed the ‘Starship Enterprise’ by irate neighbors was halted by building officials in September after a neighbor complained that construction had destabilized the slope.

Officials ordered Mohamed to demolish and remove illegal additions including an unapporoved 70-seat underground Imax theater and guest suites built below a swimming pool, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The criminal charges were brought after Mohamed’s appeal of the decision was denied.

City Councilman Paul Koretz in a statement said that Mohamed is a ‘blatant scofflaw and it’s about time he was added to the case.

Trident sports cars were born and revved in Ipswich

Ipswich was never going to rival the West Midlands or Dagenham as a car-producing area of Britain, but 50 years ago its own niche factory started producing sports cars for a specialist market.

Trident Cars were based in Turret Lane and between 1966 and 1977 and over that decade produced either 85 or 130 cars – depending on which figures you accept. Some of its vehicles were sold as kits for the owners to put together.

It is thought that between 19 and 25 of the cars survive and can be 
driven – and the vehicle owned by 
John Landsbury from Hadleigh 
has a particularly spectacular history.

Mr Landsbury’s Trident Venturer took part in the historic London to Mexico Rally in 1970 which was an appetiser for the Mexico World Cup that summer.

Its bodywork was signed by members of the England World Cup squad which ultimately reached 
the quarter finals of the 
competition before suffering one of the nation’s worst ever sporting defeats – losing 2-3 to West Germany in the quarter finals after being 2-0 ahead.

The car is still roadworthy – although it does need some work and a new MoT certificate before it can take to the road again.

And Mr Landsbury said 2016 would be a very significant year for 
everyone with an interest in the company.

“It is 50 years since they started producing cars in Ipswich and there is quite a lot of interest in that. My car has an interesting history and I was asked to enter it in a classic rally in Blackpool soon but I think that will be too far to take it on the back of a lorry.”

He has bought another Trident – but that will need some work to bring it back to full working order.

Mr Landsbury said: “I haven’t taken delivery of it yet and it will need some work – but it should be running again after about three months.”

There is a Trident car on show at Ipswich Transport Museum and the active Trident Car Club is expected to mark the Golden Jubilee of the company at rallies this year.

Saturday 28th August – Lavenham Carnival and Rare Breeds Motor Show

12 noon to 6pm.

The Tropicalia Samba dancers and drummers are booked and the hilarious and flexible, Abigail Collins, returns to perform in character as Garden Veranda (her very own take on Carmen Miranda).

Join in the festivities and follow the colourful procession, which leaves the Market Place at 12noon, and leads the crowds to the Recreation grounds. Come along and… 

• View the Rare Breeds Motor Show display, the Hilly Ridge Alpacas and Samba workshops
• Enjoy land zorbing, archery, bungee trampolining, bumper cars/boats and an inflatable assault course
• Visit the Children’s activities tent for clown magic, balloon twisting, face painting, and arts and crafts
• Peruse the numerous craft and charity stalls and taste the sumptuous food and beverage offerings
• Or simply sit back and enjoy the various acts and displays in around the main arena and performance tent

Admission to the Carnival grounds is £5 per adult, 15’s and under gain free admission. Entrance programmes will be sold in advance at Number Ten Wine Bar and Kitchen, The Cock Horse, Lavenham Butchers, Sparling and Faiers Bakery and The Lavenham British Legion. They will also be available at the gates on the day.

Additional parking fields will be available at Rectory Meadow (opposite the Church), the common (where Water Street joins the Brent Eleigh Road) and the meadow on Frogs Hall Road. A free bus service will be provided from these car parks to transport you to the Recreation Grounds.
