A trip to Kent to collect our 2005 Vauxhall VX220 Turbo

Today we are collecting our beautifully original 2005 Vauxhall VX220 Turbo to bring down and have prepared ready for re-sale.

As original as you’ll get, our 2005 Vauxhall VX220 is undoubtedly one of the most appealing examples on the road today and could be yours in time for summer.

it was nice and sunny for the trip back from Kent and our Vx220 is now safely tucked up in our workshops ready to be detailed, photographed and advertised.

 

Repairing the Morgan’s seat recliner

At some stage recently the seat reclining mechanism had been wound up too much and has broken the internal operation. Having stripped the seat back to reveal the mechanism Pete has been able to resolve the issue. Now the seat reclines as it should.

Inspecting the underneath of our 1937 International

1981 Alfa Romeo Spider

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Battling through the ‘Beast From The East‘, our 1981 Alfa Romeo Spider has finally arrived in our Suffolk workshops from the stunning setting of Tigh An Eilean, Ross-shire, Scotland.

Although having been dry stored, in a garage, for over 10 years, the car has suffered from the ever changing Scottish temperatures. The body has unfortunately deteriorated heavily over the years and will require a considerable amount of attention.

On the positive side, the hood has been down ever since the car was put away but has survived the test of time and is superb condition.

Running up the International engine for the first time

It has been sitting in a field under cover for a number of years and it is our intention to look at getting her back up and running and hopefully back on the road someday.

Correcting the exhaust rubbing

We noticed whilst on our ramps that the exhaust seemed very close to the tyre and upon closer inspection it was evident that it had been rubbing against the inner wall of the tyre.

This was due to the bracket being bent the wrong way. It was a great find by Peter and a quick fix that has saved a lot of money in unnecessarily worn tyres.

 

1960 Jensen 541S painted and being polished

Our 1960 Jensen 541S is once again back in the original Pearl Grey finish as it was when new.

The final polishing is yet to be completed and we should see her return to our Ipswich workshops sometime later this week.

Refurbished GT6 Gearbox in and ready to go

The Triumph GT6 engine and gearbox refurb is now complete and fitted back in. The car is now on its way back to Stowmarket and is now ready for the summer.

We can’t wait to see this little beauty at a few of the Suffolk car shows this year.

Replacing the inner sills of our 1996 Jaguar XJR Supercharged

The new wheel arches are now fitted up and ready for shaping.

Tommy is now removing the inner sills and fabricating new as a direct replacement. As you can see, the sills have suffered hugely over the years and the metalwork needs to be cut out at the source and replaced with new. Not tackling these problems correctly will result in the affected areas deteriorating even more.

 

Out in the sunshine after 14 years in storage

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After 14 years being tucked up in a garage in Shieldaig, Scotland, our 1981 Alfa Romeo Spider has once again seen the daylight.  We have spent the morning freeing her up and getting ready for the long trip down to Suffolk.

W have called upon the help of our good friend Ron from K.A.R.R Solutions who has agreed to transport the car down to our workshops.

Having stopped up here over night we are sad to be saying goodbye to this stunning setting but we can’t wait to get our Alfa back into our workshops for a full inspection and assessment.

1990 Morgan 4/4 – getting summer ready

We have now taken in the first of the fantastic collection of cars on offer at Big Sky Classic Car Hire. With a diary full of summer bookings, the cars have been off the road for the winter and have come in now for a general check over and to correct any minor issues that have developed over the season.

First up, we have our 1990 Morgan 4/4. One of only 42 1990 4/4’s and one of 3,560 4/4’s of all ages currently licensed or SORNd in the UK.

The 4/4 (stands for ‘four wheels and 4 cylinders’) model was launched in 1936 and is still the smallest and lightest of the Morgan 4 wheel cars in production.

In 1936 the engine was an 1100 cc Coventry Climax unit and since then a variety of engines and transmissions have been used but in more recent years Ford 1600 or 1800 engines and gearboxes have dominated. A total of 5448 versions of this particular model were made between 1968 and 1993 in both 2 and 4 seater options.

 

Collection day – 1937 International, 1957 Ford F100

Both vehicles have been left in storage for many years, in a yard, right here in Suffolk. Due to a bereavement we have acquired the vehicles with a view to recommissioning them.

Once back at our workshops we will fully assess the work required and try to get them up and running.

Replacing the rear wheel arch

Tommy has made real progress over the last few days removing the existing wheel arches, repairing the internals and replacing with new.

From leaving the factory, the Jaguar XJR inner arch was sealed using a second layer to help position the panel as well as act as extra protection in the form of a special adhesive. This is not a common method but to stick to originality we wanted to replicate this when fitting the new panels.

For now, we have removed the outer arches and lined up the new panels ready to be fitted up.

 

The E-Type Interior Refit

We are now on to the final stretch of the full restoration of our 1967 Jaguar E-Type 2+2. John is fitting up the black interior with all of the modern additions including the bespoke Air Conditioning panels and the fully concealed blue-tooth audio set up.

Refurbishing the Bentley’s Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder

A trip down the A14 for us as we look to get the Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder refurbished by the guys at Past Parts.

Past Parts specialise in the supply and re-manufacture of braking and clutch parts for a range of older vehicles including older and classic cars, classic motorcycles, commercial and agricultural vehicles, and industrial plant machinery.

The brake cylinders have been refurbished ready to be fitted back up.

Drive It Day returns to Kersey for 2018

1971 Ford Capri Engine Respray

The engine was removed prior to the car arriving in our workshops. With the engine out we were able to respray in and around the engine bay.

Under-sealing our 1991 Nissan Figaro

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]One final task to be carried out on our 1991 Nissan Figaro is to take a look at any areas underneath that require a clean down and under-seal.

Once on the ramp it is evident that no under-seal is currently present and there are a few areas in particular that require attention prior to any sealing being carried out.

Working on the Ford Capri bodywork

We have had lots of work to do on the Ford Capri with the unveiling of the sills uncovering much more rot than we first anticipated.

The affected areas have now been cut out, treated and new, improved components have been manufactured.

 

Off to the paintshop

The day has come for our 1967 Jaguar E-Type race replica to head off to the paint shop for the full preparation and respray.

Although we are now on the 11th hour, our choice of colours are yet to be finalised.

With the ‘Beast From The East’ setting up home here in Suffolk and showing no signs of going anywhere soon, it’s the prefect time for our 1974 Triumph GT6 to come in for the gearbox and overdrive overhaul.

This project is one for Andy so he’s now removing the engine to be able to get to the gearbox ready for work to commence.

Barons Auction Day

The ‘Beast From The East’ threatened to spoil the day but no such luck as we saw a great turn out of cars and spectators.

The morning started out bright and sunny with Russells Transport meeting us over in Pettistree to load up ready for the trip.

We had three cars appearing, our 1950 Ford V8 Pilot, 1991 TVR 450 SEAC and our 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12.

The alignment of the bonnet has been the most challenging part of this particular stage but Asa has conquered the beast and everything lines up as expected.

The boot lid is now a permanent fixture and the bodywork for the new fuel filler has been shaped.

The paint preparation is well underway on our 1968 Jaguar E-Type roadster.

We are looking to complete a full rear re-spray, including the doors, as well as tidying the bulkhead in the certain areas that would benefit from freshening up.

1975 Maserati Merak – Butley Priory

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Butley Priory, near Woodbridge was the setting for our 1975 Maserati Merak photo-shoot.

History

Deep in the sandy heath lands of east Suffolk, close to the river Butley is the gate house of Butley Priory, virtually all that remains of the Augustinian Priory founded here in 1171. It was built under William de Geystone (prior, 1311 – 1322).

The priory originally comprised a magnificent collection of buildings, and covered an area of twenty acres enclosed by a stone wall. Although nothing remains of this once great priory except the fine gatehouse and an arch which once led out of the south transept of the church, the plan of the site is known from the excavations carried out in 1930 by Montague Rendell, scholar and ex headmaster of Winchester, who bought the Gatehouse in 1926.

Unique features of the building are its extensive armorial frieze on the north side and exuberant flushwork decoration, ‘an amazing fantasy – wonderfully preserved through its complete charm can only be fully realised from a scaffold or by means of a powerful glass, so delicate is its carving and expression of the little sprightly features that adorn it, so rich the imagination with which they are inspired’.

It is thought that the stone used in the building of the priory came from the valley of the Yonne in France, and that it was brought up the Butley River in barges. A canal was cut to bring the stone to the wharf only 200 yards south of the Priory church.

The first king to visit Butley Priory appears to have been Henry III, who arrived on 9th March 1235.

It would seem from early records that the most important person after the sub-prior, and possibly the most popular, was the cellarer. In the only two instances where the records tell of the position previously held by a newly elected prior, we are informed that he had been the cellarer – William de Geystone, 1311, and Thomas Sudbourne, 1528.

Tradition has it that some where within the Priory grounds is buried a Silver Coffin containing the body of Michael de la Pole, third Earl of Suffolk, who fell at the side of Edward Plantagenet, Duke of York, at Agincourt.

It was during the time of Prior Augustine Rivet (1509 – 28) that the priory became the regular resort of many of the nobility who came there for the hunting. Mary Tudor, sister to Henry VIII, was a frequent visitor between 1515 and 1519. In 1527 she stayed for two months accompanied by her new husband Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.

On 6th August 1527, as it was very hot she ordered her supper to be laid out in a shady part the garden on the east side of the gatehouse.  This she so enjoyed that picnic suppers in the Priory gardens became a regular feature of her stays. It is recorded in Brother Nicholas’s garden the royal party were overtaken by a tremendous storm and had to rush to the church for shelter.

On the 1st March 1538, Butley Priory, with all its lands and properties, was surrendered to Henry VIII. The commissioner, who received the surrender William Petre, stated that ‘we have today received the surrender of Butley, to which the Convent assented very quietly’.

For the next two years the Priory was used as a royal hunting lodge before being granted in 1540 to Thomas, duke of Norfolk, who in turn sold it toWilliam Forthe of Hadleigh in 1544 for £910 2s 2d. Anne, his only daughter inherited it and later married Viscount Hereford, who left it to his daughter Elizabeth. She married John Clyatt in 1684 and having no children settled the estate and heirs.

In 1737 George Wright Esq, married the Clyatt heiress and inherited the property it was George Wright who restored the Gatehouse and converted it into ‘a handsome mansion’. Later the house became the residence or shooting seat of many important people of the day, including the Marquis of Donegall, Lord Archibald Hamilton and Lord Rendlesham. After this time it went into decline for some years and was used periodically for some years as a very cold vicarage, until in 1926 the Gate house was saved again by the aforementioned Dr. Rendall who called in the famous architect Caroe and began an intensive programme of restoration and conservation to a country house.

A new front entrance was introduced into an angle of the east wing. Bedrooms and a bathroom were located above and a kitchen created out of the Georgian annex. Buttresses were repaired and the armorial frieze was carefully conserved.

It appears that such was Dr. Rendall’s passion for the building that he spent his last penny on the restoration work, and was forced to sell the property in his later years to Sir Bernard Greenwell Bart, who generously allowed him to live out his life at Butley.

The Gatehouse is currently owned by his son Sir Edward Greenwell who lives outside Orford. The present tenants, the Cavendish family have lived here since 1987 and have made the house into the very unique combination of private event venue and family home that it is today.

Due to its unique appeal the house has featured in design and interior decorating magazines as well as national newspapers on several occasions. One cannot help but wonder what the monks would have made of it all!

The Shoot

On Thursday 15th February 2018, with the location set and sun was shining we were ready for the exciting Maserati shoot.

John and Craig took the car, along with Mike from Shine Supply UK and Jason at Sugar and Spice Photography. We were welcomed at Butley Priory by Emma who gave us a lovely little tour of the  priory too.

An amazing setting for a wedding and a great location for photographic shoots and filming.

1980 MG Midget Photo-Shoot

The shoot took place inside the newest barn within the Suffolk Plant Centre complex in Pettistree. Recently completed, the barn is currently empty and makes for an amazing indoor shoot especially with the white background behind the black car.

1980 MG Midget 1500

This must be one of the lowest mileage midgets on offer.

When it arrived at our workshops in Ipswich there were superficial marks on the body but absolutely no rust in the shell. After a lot of deliberation we decided to repaint the car. We removed the engine and gearbox and polished the wax-oyled engine bay that had done its job over the years in preserving the original paintwork and fending off rust.

A new clutch was fitted at this time and a full rebuild of the twin carbs.

We did not paint the engine bay, boot area or front slam panel as we wanted to retain as much of the original car as possible.

The engine and gearbox was detailed to original and at no time did we fit the glitzy parts that others think make the cars look better. We wanted to retain originality.

The original softop had one very small tear so we fitted a brand new Mohair roof rather than repair the vinyl one.

It still retains its original hood and tonneau covers. The original soft-top is sold with the car.

The car came with a fitted roll bar. I think this spoils the lines of the car so I haven’t refitted it.

The wheels have been professionally refurbished to as new and 5 new tyres fitted.
