BYD has set a new record with its all-electric compact hatchback, the DOLPHIN SURF, as the one millionth unit rolled off the line at its Xi’an facility in China, just 27 months after the model launched.
Known as the SEAGULL in China and the DOLPHIN MINI in Latin America, the DOLPHIN SURF has been hugely successful and has now become the fastest-selling car in the A00 segment’s history, with the car being at the top of the sales charts more than 20 times over the last two years.

“The DOLPHIN SURF has set benchmarks and records ever since it was introduced, topping the monthly sales charts in its class more than 20 times in just over two years. We said at the car’s recent European launch that it’s a global superstar that breaks down barriers to the adoption of sustainable mobility, and we’re thrilled that a million examples are now on the roads around the world. Regardless of whether you know this vehicle as the SEAGULL, DOLPHIN MINI or DOLPHIN SURF, its recipe for success is pure and simple: an accessible zero-emissions vehicle that’s practical and flexible for everyday use in cities and beyond, and packed with BYD’s useful technologies.”

The compact EV is now available in Europe, where BYD hopes it will help boost adoption of new-energy vehicles in the region’s smaller car segments. While just nine per cent of A- and B-segment sales in Europe are currently electric, the DOLPHIN SURF is designed to change that with a smart mix of size, efficiency, and tech.
At 3,990mm long and 1,720mm wide, the DOLPHIN SURF is a good fit for city driving. Despite its small size, it actually has cabin space and boot capacity that rivals cars from the class above, thanks to BYD’s in-house e-Platform 3.0.
European buyers can choose from three versions. The entry-level Active comes with a 30kWh battery and a 65kW motor, while the Boost model upgrades to a 43.2kWh battery offering up to 322km WLTP Combined range (and 502km in the city). The Comfort trim tops the range with a 115kW motor and a 0–100km/h time of 9.1 seconds.
Standard kit across all variants includes a 10.1-inch rotatable touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, NFC keyless entry, LED lighting, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. Higher trims add features like rain-sensing wipers, 360-degree cameras, heated seats, and wireless phone charging.
With one million units on the road already and momentum building in new markets, the DOLPHIN SURF looks like it will keep setting new benchmarks for EV production.
