This is the 1902 Arrol‑Johnston Dogcart.

It is extremely old and looks like it should be pulled along the road by a horse. However, it doesn’t need a horse to help it move as it has an engine. This is one of the oldest cars that is still around today.

Back in the early 1900s, most people still used horse-drawn wagons to travel around. So when early cars started being made, they looked a lot like the wagons people were used to, but with one big difference… they had engines instead of horses!

Built by Bridge Builders

This car was made by a company called Arrol‑Johnston in Scotland. One of the founders, Sir William Arrol, was also a famous engineer who worked on some huge bridges like the Forth Bridge and Tower Bridge in London.

Why Is It Called a “Dogcart”?

The name Dogcart comes from a type of old carriage that had high wooden seats and big wheels. This car looked just like that, but it was powered by an engine.

It had a twin-cylinder engine, could go up to 25 miles per hour, and even had 4 gears. That would have been a big deal back in 1902!

Hidden Away

The special car in this story is known as XS 2. It might’ve belonged to a rich Scottish family in the early 1900s, then got stored away on an island in Scotland for over 20 years!

It was found again in 1942 by a man in the Navy who loved old cars. Since then, it’s been owned by collectors and even shown off in a car museum.

A Special Car

Only eight of these old Dogcarts are still around today. Some take part in the famous London to Brighton Run, where really old cars go on a big drive every year.

This one is so rare and special, it is expected to sell for £70,000 to £90,000 at auction!
