Classic car technician Jonn has been giving our 1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet a final check over before it leaves us ready to be delivered to its new owner, who was lucky enough to win it through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions.
Jonn installed a new GPS speedo in the car before testing it. The test was a successful one and the speedo worked beautifully.
Our Golf GTI also spent a small amount of time in the paint shop with Mauro as he freshened up a couple of areas of paint too.
After noticing that the electric windows weren’t working correctly on our 1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet, classic car technician Jonn has been working on repairing the issue so everything is working as it should be when it is eventually won through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions.
Jonn stripped the doors and removed the nearside electric window motor and regulator. While the doors were stripped, Jonn made weather shields for both sides of the car. Once the motor and regulator had been checked, the doors were reassembled.
The next job was to drill out the door button lever so the connecting rod fit before the door panel was refitted and the door button was fitted.
Jonn went on to sort the electric window wiring. He cut and soldered the old wiring ready for new switches. Before the new switch panel went into the car, it was painted to make it look as good as possible before it was fitted.
Our 1986 Golf GTI Cabriolet has been in the care of classic car technician Jonn, as he has been inspecting and assessing the car before a new owner will be found through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions very soon.
Jonn cleaned and inspected the rear brakes before making some adjustments and refitting the drum. While working on our Golf, Jonn noticed that there was some interesting wiring in the car and some faulty relays too. This was likely put in when the aftermarket headlights were fitted by a previous owner but is now sorted thanks to Jonn.
The electric windows have not been working correctly since our Golf arrived so Jonn investigated this. He found that the switches were faulty so resolved this to make sure the windows were working as they should.
A new timing belt and tensioner were also fitted in preparation for our 1986 Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet to be won.
Our 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been with classic car technician Brian as he has been fitting a new ceiling cloth. After removing the sun visors, centre panel, light, and grab handles, he undid the headliner clips and removed the seal around the roof.
Brian then had to undo the headliner around the sunroof before undoing the seat belts and C Post panels too. After undoing the rear window trim panel, the headliner board was removed.
The sunroof inner panel was next to come out before the clips were removed from it. New material was cut out and the sunroof inner panel was covered.
Once the old glue and foam had been cleaned off the headliner board, Brian cut calico material to use to repair the broken parts of the board. There was a missing part of the board which Brian repaired with a piece of millboard. The calico material was glued to the back of the board to repair the damaged areas as well as to strengthen the board.
Once the headliner board was repaired, new foam was glued to it before the cover was glued on too. The interior components that had been removed were cleaned and the roof centre panel was recovered before the light was refitted.
The headliner board was fitted into the car and new sun visor clips went in too. The sun visors were fitted before Brian replaced the missing nuts on the speaker. The C-post panels and rear seat belts were next followed by the rear grab handles and the B-post panels.
Brian went on to fit the front seat belts back into the car as well as fitting longer clips to the rear edge trim panel before trimming the hole for the sunroof. The trim was fitted to the edge of the sunroof hole and the sunroof headliner panel was reinstalled. Finally, the wind deflector and headliner clips were put on and the headliner repairs were complete.
A new DAB aerial was also fitted recently.
We have welcomed another new addition to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop in the form of our 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI.
During its time in the workshop, our team of classic car technicians will be fitting a new ceiling cloth, new sun visor clips, and a new DAB aerial.
We are looking forward to starting work on this classic Golf and can’t wait to see it complete.
Our 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI is heading home temporarily. After a change in circumstances for the owner of the car, they have decided to postpone restoration work for now.
We are very much looking forward to welcoming our Golf GTI back into the workshop in the future so it can be brought back to all of its former glory.
It may be some time before we see our 1987 VW Golf GTI in the workshops but having been sitting outside and open to the elements since 2007, we thought it was best to get the car inside and away from the wind and the rain.
Having been owned by the same family for many years Alice has decided to get her father’s the car back on the road for many more years of enjoyment.
After a little bit of tree surgery in order to get the van through the gates, Tom and Mauro have managed to pull the car out and successfully loaded (him) in to the trailer.
Now safely tucked away in the Hangar, our first job will be to thoroughly clean the car, inside and out. This way, we can see work is involved in the restoration or re-commission of this modern classic.
With a small window of opportunity in the trim shop diary Kath and Brian have got to work in removing the very wet, and very mouldy interior trim. We’ll return all of the interior to the workshops for a full assessment and clean and we hope to be able to rescue as much of it as possible.
Check out the T-shirt that Alice was wearing in the image above. The wheels aren’t the same but the number plate sure is!
