Work Begins On Our Mercedes 420SL

Work has begun on our 1988 Mercedes 420SL with classic car technician Brian getting to work on repairing the interior trim of the classic Mercedes.

Brian removed the old centre console wood trim panel before removing the heater control wood trim panel and all switches. The glovebox wood trim panel and lock were also removed before the wood trim from the dash panels was removed too.

When Brian removed the trim from the ashtray, he cleaned the old mastic off before fitting a new wood trim panel to it. New wood trim panels were fixed to the glovebox too. Brian then re-fitted the lock and put the glovebox back into the car.

More replacement wood trim was fitted to the dash centre and side panels. The heater also had its wood trim replaced. As this was being made, the hole for the switch was found to be in the wrong place so Brian had to modify this to fit.

Rubber surrounds were fitted to the switch and to the gearshift panel before Brian fitted everything back into the car.

Work wasn’t done on our 420SL though as Brian also repaired a scuff in the roof hood.

Headliner Finished

Classic car technician Brian continued his work on our 1993 Mercedes E220 and recently finished repairing the headliner of this classic car.

He glued the wood to the back of the headliner board for the rear blind hooks before glueing the foam to the board too. Brian then glued the headliner material to the board and fitted a velcro strip behind the sunroof opening.

The board was fitted into the car and the light was put back into the rear of the roof. The grab handles were reinstalled, as were the front pad and sun visors. Brian fitted the metal trims to the edge of the sunroof and the headliner repair was complete.

For Sale – 1998 Mercedes E240

Our 1998 Mercedes E240 is for sale!

This is a beautiful car that has only covered 34,000 miles from new. Very little work was needed but we have painted the off-side rear door as the lacquer was slightly faded.

We originally purchased our E240 from a good friend of Bridge Classic Cars to be part of our own personal collection. However, it is such an impressive car that we feel it needs to be enjoyed by a new owner who will get more use out of it.

It has been extremely well cared for with no rust and the interior looks to be in the condition it would have been in when it first left the factory.

Our 1998 Mercedes E240 is available on eBay.

Now that this classic car has some new paint, it is looking much better than it did when it first arrived at the Bridge Classic Cars workshop and classic car technician Mauro has been putting things back together to get the car ready to move on to the next stage of its stay with us.

Our 1998 Mercedes E240 will eventually be put up for sale. It’s a beautiful car and will make a great addition to someone’s garage in the future.

For now though, we will enjoy admiring it in the workshop.

Still Going Strong – 1969 Mercedes 280SL (Pagoda)

It’s been a little while since our 1969 Mercedes 280SL (Pagoda) left the Bridge Classic Cars workshop. After undergoing an engine rebuild with us, it left the workshop to be returned to its owner a few months ago.

Since then, we have had some great feedback about the performance of the car and it sounds like it is very much at home being back out on the road.

Feedback from the owner includes:

“I have now done over 500 mainly motorway miles in the car and it is running well. Thank you again for the work you have done”.

and

“the car continues to run beautiful and was a pleasure to drive on a long trip to France a couple of weeks back”.

Hearing that a restored car is bringing enjoyment to its owner is something that makes us very happy. Classic cars like this are all about having the perfect driving experience so this is exactly the type of feedback we aim to achieve.

Final preparations before tonight’s draw

Ahead of tonight’s double draw night, Dave has been finishing off a couple of small tasks on our 1968 Mini 850.

We have replaced the oil seals around the gearbox to the driveshafts. We’ve also replaced the rocker cover gaskets. We also noticed that the exhaust bracket was touching the handbrake cable guide so we have flipped the exhaust bracket around the other way so this is now far enough away so that it is no longer touching.

See you tonight for the live draw of this and our 1991 Mercedes 300 SL. There are still a few tickets remaining on our Mercedes, grab your last minute tickets now! Good luck

Piece by Piece – Repairing the Hardtop on the 1991 Mercedes 300SL

The hardtop from the 1991 Mercedes 300SL has been moved into the Bridge Classic Cars trim shop to be repaired.

The removable hardtop had begun to come apart at the edges in several places so the team have worked their magic on rejuvenating the roof.

First off, the entire piece was stripped back in order to remove any old adhesives and allow for the team to create a better fit. The better fitting of parts also meant the team removed the pillar trims to pull the pieces tighter into the trims.

Wit that the trim team could then work on the headliner by removing the original material and then sanding back the misshapen foams. After that, the team have then replaced the headliner material before putting the entire assembly back together and put the hardtop on its holder ready to go back on the car.

Getting Sorted – Work on our 2005 Mercedes Benz Vito

Our 2005 Mercedes Benz Vito is the trusty workhorse of the Bridge Classic Cars fleet. It is used by our transport team across the country delivering cars or locally to pick up parts or move our classics from the workshop to Bentwaters or specialist etc.

The team thought it was time to address a couple of bits and pieces that needed sorting on the van so it was handed over to our workshop and then to our paint and body team.

The workshop team began by inspecting and overhauling the brakes on the Vito as they needed attention. Tom, one of our technicians, completely stripped back and replaced any components which needed to be replaced. During this time, the team could have a look at a few areas of corrosion on the lower parts of the quarter panels.

Once the fabrication team had cut out all the corrosion, the new panels could be carefully welded into before the paint and body team took over to refine the areas and work on some of the door latches ahead of the van going into paint to have those areas blended in.

With the paint and body team now working on the trusty Vito, the guys could start to prepare the areas which had been worked on as well as areas which had general wear and tear in order to refresh the whole van. A few deep scratches were flattened back and filled along with making sure the areas which had been welded were in perfect shape before going into the booth to be painted.

Cut Back – Polishing the Body and Painting Final Parts of the 1987 Mercedes 500SL

The paint and bodywork teams at Bridge Classic Cars have been working on the final processes of the 1987 Mercedes 500SL restoration.

Alan, one of our painters, has been working on cutting back the grey paintwork on the classic R107 in preparation for its polishing. This has to be done very carefully as to not damage the edges of the lacquer/clear coat on the car. A series of finer and finer wet sandpapers are used until the clearcoat is flat, uniform and flawless and then machine polished to a mirror polish.

Also, the team have painted the final pieces of trim on the car in the heavily durable black that other pieces of the car have been finished in.

Guarded – Raptorgaurding the Inner Wings and Bulkhead of the 1987 Mercedes 500SL

The inner wings and several pieces of the bulkhead from the 1987 Mercedes 500SL have been finished in thick durable Raptorguard by the Bridge Classic Cars in-house paint shop.

Alan, one of our painters, has been working on completing this task as part of the final paint stages on the classic Mercedes R107. This stage involved coating several key areas of the car with a thick, durable Raptorguard. This particular product seals the surface from any form of moisture that can find its way inside the metal. So, the team have finished the inside of the front wings and several key parts of the bulkhead and heater matrix.

With this done and now curing, the team can soon begin reassembly of the classic Mercedes 500SL.
