Jonn has addressed an issue with the steering column lower bush on our 1987 Rover Vitesse. He began by undoing the securing plate at the bulkhead, then proceeded to clean the splines on the steering shaft and slacken the universal joint. The shaft was knocked down, and alignment marks were made on the splines to ensure correct reassembly.

The clamp bolt at the steering rack was then slackened, allowing the shaft to be knocked down as far as possible. With assistance from John, the universal joint was successfully removed from the column. Jonn removed both the column bush and its mounting plate, fitted a new bush to the plate, and refitted the assembly to the column from inside the car. The shaft was then knocked back into position on the column, aligning it with the previously made marks.

He then slid the shaft upwards and fitted the clamp bolts, securing one to the column and another to the shaft. The plate and bush were secured back onto the bulkhead, and the clamp bolt at the rack was raised and tightened. Once the vehicle was off the ramp, a road test was carried out to confirm that the steering was straight and functioning correctly, with no further issues noted.
