One of those rare “good luck finding another” cars… and I’m more than happy to discuss any sensible offers.
If you’re looking for a modern sports car with touchscreens, driving modes and electronic gadgets, this probably isn’t the car for you.
If, however, you want something that makes every drive feel special, attracts attention wherever it goes and puts a smile on your face every time you open the garage door, then please read on.
Finished in Porsche Blue with a beautiful red interior, this factory-built Banham Porsche 550A RS Spyder Recreation captures the look and spirit of one of the most iconic sports racing cars ever produced.
One of the reasons I bought the car in the first place was because it was factory-built by Paul Banham’s team rather than home assembled. Banham Conversions became one of Britain’s best-known specialist car manufacturers, producing a range of recreations and specialist vehicles throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Their Porsche 550 Spyder recreation remains one of their finest designs and still turns heads nearly forty years later.
Registered as a Historic Vehicle, it benefits from both road tax exemption and MOT exemption.
Under the rear deck sits a 1500cc Alfa Romeo flat-four boxer engine producing approximately 119bhp at 6, 175rpm. Breathing through twin Dell’Orto carburettors with K&N performance filters and coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, it delivers a driving experience that feels raw, mechanical and wonderfully involving.
Unlike many 550 recreations that use Volkswagen engines, this Alfa-powered example has a character all of its own. The distinctive boxer soundtrack, together with the occasional pop and crackle on the overrun, only adds to its race-inspired personality.
Over the last year I’ve thoroughly enjoyed exhibiting the car at classic shows, where it has attracted crowds of admirers and won awards. It seems to appeal to everyone, from lifelong Porsche enthusiasts to children seeing a 550 Spyder for the very first time.
Whether you’re looking for something to enjoy on sunny Sunday mornings, display at prestigious classic car events or simply own a car that starts conversations wherever it goes, this Banham delivers an experience that’s impossible to replicate with modern machinery.
It isn’t just another classic car – it’s an event every time you take it out.
Condition
The car presents exceptionally well and has clearly been cherished throughout its life.
The oil was changed in June 2025 and only approximately 600 miles have been covered since. The previous gauge reading was recorded at 5, 137 miles before replacement gauges were fitted.
It starts readily, runs beautifully and produces no smoke.
Included in the sale are two professionally produced A1 display boards detailing both the history of this car and the Porsche 550A RS Spyder, together with a large display canvas featuring the vehicle. These have always attracted plenty of interest at classic shows and will be included, along with the twin keys.
One of the things I’ve loved most about owning this car is its uniqueness.
Despite attending numerous classic events, I’ve yet to park alongside another Banham 550A RS Spyder Recreation.
You can buy plenty of modern sports cars for this sort of money, but I genuinely don’t believe you’ll find another car that offers quite the same blend of character, rarity, theatre and sheer enjoyment.
The car will also be attending the Lincolnshire Classics alongside BANGERS AND CASH Matthewsons family Classic Event at Lincolnshire Showground giving any prospective buyer the opportunity to see it in person.
