Jon began repair work on our 1985 Mercedes 500SL following the arrival of the required parts, starting with the replacement of both rocker cover gaskets. He first stripped down the nearside cover, then removed, cleaned, and prepared the mating surfaces. As the new gaskets had been folded in their packaging and were misshapen, he carefully warmed them with a hot air gun to restore their form before fitting and securing them in place. The same process was then carried out on the offside gasket.

Once both covers were refitted and tightened down, Jon reconnected all associated pipework, including the breather pipes. He washed down the manifold runner to remove residue from oil that had previously been weeping from the covers. He also removed the distributor cap and rotor in preparation for replacement; however, the items supplied were found to be incorrect.
