Lego has just introduced something totally new: Smart Bricks! These new blocks can light up, make sounds, and react to movement.
Lego showed off the Smart Bricks at a tech event in Las Vegas called CES 2026, and they say it’s their biggest idea in nearly 50 years! The first Smart Brick set coming out in March is all about Star Wars so we’re already imagining working lightsabers and spaceships!
Some People Aren’t Happy
Some experts say that part of Lego’s magic is using your imagination, not electronics. A group that looks out for kids’ well-being, Fairplay, says kids already make their Lego creations move and talk in their heads! One professor even called it the beauty of Lego, being able to build anything, break it down, and dream up new stories again and again.
However, others are excited about the idea. They think mixing real-world building with a bit of technology could help kids get even more creative.
What Is a LEGO Smart Brick?
A Smart Brick looks just like a normal Lego brick but has some cool tech inside:
- Lights
- Motion sensors
- Sound makers
- A tiny chip that can detect movement
These bricks are part of a whole new Smart Play System, which includes:
- Smart Minifigures (Lego people that can respond to things!)
- Smart Tags (special tiles that trigger reactions)
When these pieces work together, interesting things can happen. For example, one Lego cake “knew” when someone pretended to blow out its candles, and it played a happy birthday song! A Lego helicopter made flying sounds and even turned red if it “crashed.”
The bricks talk to each other using a wireless system that Lego designed just for this.
