James Bond – The Sustainable Spy

James Bond has access to some very cool vehicles. Whether he is driving on the road, flying through the air, or travelling by sea, he always seems to have a vehicle that is just right for the situation. However, the James Bond of the future will be environmentally conscious, so he will need some new vehicles to work with.

Here are some sustainable vehicles that James Bond could use on his missions. They will still be full of gadgets to help 007 beat the bad guys, but they will also be kind to our planet.

Sustainable Cars

The car most thought of with James Bond is the Aston Martin DB5.

Classic cars like the DB5 usually run on petrol, which isn’t great for the environment. But now, there’s a clever new type of fuel called synthetic fuel. It’s made in a special way so it doesn’t come from oil or gas, and it cuts down harmful emissions by a huge 80%! That means a lot less pollution, but the car still drives exactly the same.

One of the best things about this type of fuel is that it doesn’t need the engine to be changed at all. You just pour it in like regular petrol. It’s made using leftovers from farms, like old plants and crops we don’t eat. So it doesn’t take away food or harm nature.

If James Bond ran his DB5 on synthetic fuel, he could still escape the bad guys while also keeping Earth happy at the same time.

Other Cool Sustainable Cars For James Bond

Amphicar

The Amphicar was built in Germany between 1961 and 1968 and is special because it can drive on roads and float on water! That’s why its name comes from “amphibious” and “car”.

On the road, it drives up to 70 mph like a normal classic car. Once in the water, it slows down to about 7 mph. That would probably be just enough for 007 to make his water escape.

As the Amphicar runs on petrol, this could also use synthetic fuel like Bond’s DB5.

Aquada

If James Bond needed to go even faster on the road and in the sea, then the Gibbs Aquada might be a better choice for him. This could also be run on synthetic fuel to keep the coolness and planet-kindness equally high.

The Gibbs Aquada was built in the early 2000s by some clever engineers in the UK and New Zealand. They called it a “high-speed amphibian” – like a frog that’s happy on land or in water!

It had a V6 engine from a Land Rover, could drive faster than 100 miles per hour on land, and go around 30 mph in water. That’s about as fast as a dolphin swims! In fact, the Aquada set the world record for the fastest time to cross the English Channel. That means it is the perfect high-speed, multi-use spy vehicle.

Sustainable Flight

Sometimes, 007 needs to take to the air to complete his missions.

Helicopter Running on Synthetic Fuel

In April 2024, the first-ever ultralight two-seat helicopter flew using 100% fossil-free fuel. The helicopter that did this was called the DKT  07. The DKT 07 is powered by a clever 150-horsepower engine that spins three rotor blades around to lift off the ground.

Imagine how cool it would be if James Bond had a helicopter that helped him complete all of his missions but was also kind to the environment.

Red Arrows

The Red Arrows are Hawk T1 jets and are the UK’s most famous flying machines.

These Royal Air Force (RAF) planes recently flew using a 43% blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) made mostly from waste cooking oil. If you have ever seen the Red Arrows, you would have seen their colourful red, white, and blue smoke trails. While the planes were flying using SAF, the smoke trails were powered by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) instead of diesel.

James Bond could make fantastic use of acrobatic planes like the Red Arrows. As they can now be powered in a more sustainable way, he could fly wherever he needs to without doing lots of damage to the environment.

Sustainable Boats

If Bond needs to travel large distances by sea, he is going to need a very good boat. Luckily, he could use some very cool sustainable vehicles to help him out.

Ferrari Hypersail

Instead of using a fossil-fuel-powered engine, the Ferrari Hypersail uses underwater wings called foils that lift it out of the water at high speed. It’s almost a flying boat!

The Hypersail gets all its power from wind, sunlight, and even the energy of the sea itself! That means zero pollution is produced.

The Hypersail is being built right now in Italy, so Bond could test its first sea flight next year.

RaceBirds

There are some race boats, known as RaceBirds, that compete in the E1 series.

They look a little bit like spaceships flying over the water.

During a race, the RaceBirds can even lift up out of the water to go even faster.

Imagine James Bond racing through the water on a fully electric boat!
