Jonn checked fluid levels on our 1947 Wolseley Eight and topped up the engine oil. On inspection, the fuel in the filter appeared dirty and showed signs of water contamination. He used the car’s fuel pump to begin emptying the tank but, after disconnecting the pipe and switching the ignition on, no fuel was coming through. He added 10 litres of E5 petrol and reactivated the pump, waiting until fuel began to flow before reconnecting the line.

The fuel filter was then removed, thoroughly cleaned, and refitted. Jonn also removed the carburettor float bowl to clean it out before refitting and turning the ignition on. He observed the filter filling up and proceeded to start the engine, which eventually fired up. A road test was attempted, but the car cut out after only 100 yards. While it would occasionally restart, it failed to keep running, so Jonn arranged for the car to be towed back. Further checks revealed that the fuel pump installed is a 6-volt unit rather than the required 12-volt.

Jonn confirmed that the fuel pump on our 1947 Wolseley Eight in is a 6-volt version. He removed the pump and carried out a full strip-down, inspecting and cleaning the internal components to ensure proper function.

Jonn refitted the fuel pump on our 1947 Wolseley Eight and connected it along with the low fuel line back to the tank. After securing all connections, he cranked the engine and successfully got it started. A road test was then carried out, covering approximately one mile before returning to the workshop. The car performed better and restarted immediately after stopping. While the engine was still warm, Jonn added an engine oil stop leak treatment. He then took the car out again, this time accompanied by Gordon to film the run for the customer. Although it briefly played up during the drive, it resumed running without significant issue and returned to the workshop without further trouble.
