MGA Restoration: Engine Bay Coming Together

Paul has been busy installing new components into our 1960 MG A’s engine bay. Paul has fitted the brake master cylinder, windscreen wiper motor, windscreen wiper reservoir, front wiring loom and the bulkhead chrome.

1960 MGA Back In The Workshop With New Paint

Chris has done a wonderful job on this MGA full respray. We’ve used a colour match to replicate the MGA’s original factory colour. This stunning red really is lovely. Now the body is back in our workshop, Paul can continue work on the mechanical restoration of this lovely 60s Classic. Great work, Team!

MGA Paint Process

Chris is now so close to completing the paintwork on our 1960 MGA. All of the panels and main body have now been painted and cured. Chris will fit up the panels onto the car before giving her a good polish. Stay tuned to see the fully assembled rolling chassis back in the workshop soon for it’s restoration to continue.

1960 MGA in the Paint Shop

Chris is making great progress on our lovely 1960 MG MGA. He’s now primed all panels in white primer with a guide coat over the top. Chris has also applied colour-matched raptor paint to the underside panels to prevent future rust and corrosion.

The MGA will be entering the final stages of paint very soon and emerging reborn with stunning red paintwork. Great work, Chris!

MGA Bodywork Progress

Our MGA restoration has been progressing nicely. The body has been down in our in-house trim shop with Chris. Chris has been checking body panel fitment and making any nessasary adjustments for perfect panel gapping.

From this stage, the panels have been thoroughly prepared. Chris has sanded and filled in the panels multiple times to make sure the surface is perfect before it goes into paint.

Great work, Chris! We can’t wait to see how this MGA looks after painting!

1960 MGA Progress update

Work continues on our 1960 MGA. The body has now been fitted to the chassis which means Chris can begin work on the other MGA panels, making sure the panel gapping and alignment is perfect before they go into the final stages of paint.

Once the MGA is out of the paint shop, Paul can continue work on the mechanical restoration. Great work, guys!

1960 MGA windscreen

Paul has been continuing work on our 1960 MG A. He’s stripped down the windscreen and windscreen assembly. The metal components will be refurbished, ready for new glass to be fitted.

MGA Bodywork Update

Chris has been working hard getting our MGA body prepared and painted. After bracing and repairing any rust patches in the metalwork, he moved onto preparing the bodywork for paint.

The underside was the first part of the vehicle to be painted. Interestingly, the underside of the body is painted in coloured Raptor. Raptor is a protective coating that provides a barrier, reducing the chances of rust appearing in the future. It still delivers a perfect colour match to the regular paint, however, it has all the protective qualities to prevent the underside from corrosion.

Once the shell has been baked off, Chris will flip the body over and move onto painting the topside. Great work, Chris!

1960 MG A Suspension and rear axle

Paul has continued work on our lovey 1960 MG A. He’s fitted the rear axle with brakes. The leaf spring suspension and a fuel pump have also recently been installed onto the car. The MG is now ready for the half shafts and brake drums to be fitted next.

1960 MG A Engine

Ady, Bridge Classic Cars’ in-house engine specialist has been working on a complete engine restoration on our 1960 MG A engine.

Here is a brief rundown of Ady’s process:

  • Totally strip down the engine
  • Unlead the cylinder head to run on modern fuel
  • Install new valve guides and valves
  • Reface the cylinder head to be fully reconditioned
  • Bore engine out and fit cast iron liners, then bore liner out to fit the new piston.
  • Cylinder block was refaced
  • Crankshaft polished
  • Assembly with new bearings, gaskets, fuel pump, oil pump ect…

1960 MG A Chassis in the Paint Shop

Chris has made wonderful progress working on the chassis of our 1960 MG A restoration. He’s braced the chassis to add structural rigidity and stop twisting. Then he’s tackled the surface rust, grinding down the effected area before applying rust treatment.

Areas that were too badly rust effected have been cut out and and had fresh metal welded in place.

Great job Chris! With Paul working on the chassis in the workshop and Chris working on the shell int he paint shop, this restoration is really starting to build up a head of steam.

1960 MG A Chassis Work Continues

Paul has continued work on our 1960 MG A Chassis. Paul is working on the MGA floor panels now. He’s used the old wood to measure up a template before fabricating new wooden floor panels. He’s repaired the front chassis section and prepared it for paintwork.

As pictured the rear section of the driveshaft tunnel has severely deteriorated and will wither need repair or replacing.

1960 MG A restoration continues

Paul has been making good progress on our MGA chassis. He has repaired the front chassis section ready to be sent down to our paint shop. He has also templated up the old wood in preparation for brand new wooden panels to be fitted. We’ve found corrosion on the rear section of the drive shaft tunnel so this will either need restoring or replacing.

MG A Body shell arrives

The shell for our 1960 MG A has arrived. Paul is still building up the chassis at this stage but shortly this shell will head down to the Paint shop shop. Once there, it will be prepped for refurbishment and paint, before being mounted onto the then rolling chassis.

1960 MG A Differential repair

Paul has continued work on our MG A complete restoration. There was damage to the rear differential but Paul has now welded that up in preparation for its refit into the car.

1960 MG A Dash

The dash has been dismantled and is now being sandblasted. Once sandblasted, it will be ready to be repainted and then reinstalled back onto the MG A during the interior refit stage.

1960 MGA: Engine and Gearbox go in

Paul, one of our highly skilled Classic Car Technicians has begun the next phase of this MGA restoration. He has mated the engine and gearbox to the Chassis. Paul has also hand fabricated brake pipe lines (pictured below).

MG A Chassis Painted

Our MG A chassis has visited our in-house paint shop here at Bridge Classic Cars . It’s now back in the workshop ready for Paul to begin re-assembily. As with all of our restoration projects, we endeavour to refurbish components to as new quality. If we do have to replace components, it will always be with the highest quality parts for the vehicle. The next step will now be to build up the suspension units and then get it on wheels.

MG A Engine is reassembled

1960 MG A Engine Rebuild – Assembly

Ady, our in-house engine specialist here at Bridge Classic Cars is now onto assembling the engine. The following has been completed on this lovely motor.

  • Cylinder head has been unleaded
  • New valve guides fitted
  • New exhaust valves
  • Valve seats have been cut
  • The head has been refaced
  • Cylinder block has been relined and bored to standard
  • Block has been refaced
  • New pistons have been fitted
  • Crankshaft has been reground
  • New camshaft followers have been fitted
  • New timing belt chain
  • New oil pump
  • Engine bearings and gaskets have been replaced.

MG A Engine Rebuild

Here at Bridge Classic Cars our engine specialists have been getting our MG A engine ready for assembly. Darren has painted the engine block and Ady has either refurbished or replaced all the other components.

Work continues on our MG A

Paul has made great progress stripping down the MG A. The clutch and brake pedal box is being removed and the bonnet catch will be refurbed.

The chassis bolt has rotted away so will need to be replaced. The rear suspension support strap will be replaced. The vehicle will also need new bearings and disks. We will be able to refurbish most of the front suspension and the brake and clutch assembly.

1960 MG A Carburettors

Ady, our in-house engine specialist has had the carburettors out on our MG A. He’s given them a full service and a polish before they’ll be refitted onto the engine.

MGA Engine Bottom End Rebuild

Ady, Bridge Classic Cars’ engine specialist has been making progress with our MGA Engine rebuild. After cleaning and servicing the carburettors he’s stripping down the bottom end of our engine.

Stripping our 1960 MG A

Paul and Tamas have been busy stripping the MG A of all of it’s removable components. In order to get the chassis blasted there needs to be mothing left on the car. Everything has been removed, labelled, photographed and stored away for assessment. We will assess each and every components to decide on where it is repairable, recoverable or whether we need to be looking to source it new.

Restoration begins on our 1960 MGA

Our team grew by one this week as we welcomed Paul to the Bridge Classic Car family. Paul brings with him a wealth of knowledge and skills that he has gathered working alongside classic cars and motorcycles for many years.

Paul has started as he means to go on here at Bridge Classic Cars by getting stuck in to his first full restoration on day 1. Our 1960 MG A is now in our workshops being stripped bare and our project is now fully underway.

1960 MGA Walk Round

Seeing the sunshine for the first time in 26 years our 1960 MGA barn find is now back in our workshops awaiting assessment.

1960 MGA: 26 yrs stored in a barn

Having been stored away for 26 years in a barn in the midlands we were expecting the worse when we went up to collect the car. After pumping up the tyres and making a pathway it was relatively straight forward to wheel out which was great news.

With the car all loaded up as well as the boxes of extras we headed back down the A14 ready to welcome the car to our Woodbridge workshops.

After many years of searching. The original owner of our 1960 MGA has now been reunited with the very car he once owned and used for his wedding. Locked away in a barn for over 25 years we collected the car this week from the midlands and is now back with us here in Suffolk.
