Our 1954 Jaguar XK120 has made some great progress as of late.

As you can see from the pictures below, things are starting to come together.

A New Arrival

We recently welcomed our 1982 Citroen GSA into the Bridge Classic Cars workshop for a service.

Technician Jonn checked all of the lights and levels and topped them up where needed. The handbrake linkage was lubricated and the air filter was removed, blown out, and refitted.

The car was raised up on the ramp so Jonn could drain the oil and inspect the underside. He stripped and checked the rear brakes which were fine. The front inboard brakes were also fine but the gearbox oil was slightly low. This was topped up before Jonn tested the battery. The battery failed so a new one was fitted along with a new oil filter and spark plugs.

New oil was put in before it the car was run up to temperature and tested. All tyres were checked and inflated where necessary and the wheel nuts were torqued. Once all this was complete, a road test was carried out which Jonn was happy with.

Some points that Jonn noted were:

  • Cambelt was replaced in 2017 but only done 6000 miles
  • Front pads 15% worn, discs ok.
  • Rear pads 5% worn, discs ok.
  • Exhaust hitting floor.
  • Steering wheel out to right.
  • Slightly oily underneath.

Step in us, who purchased it last August in memorial of my father who passed away earlier that year. It’s truly fantastic, and I have more pics of her recent adventures in the highlands. I will send them through to you.”

Roof And Front End

Our 1951 Austin Devon has been with Christian in the fabrication bay for more work recently. He painted the roof, modified the roof and mounting point, and fitted up and welded on the guttering, before welding the roof onto the truck.

Christian also fitted up the front end.

Transporting Our Porsche

Our 1989 Porsche 928 S has been collected by Tony and transported back to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

Seat Runners

As our 1956 Jensen 541 continues to make good progress through its restoration journey here at Bridge Classic Cars, Paul has been assembling the seat runners and drilling the mounting holes for these. The seat belt mounts have been fitted to the gearbox tunnel and the work has begun on fitting the door trim and the fabrication of a cage for the striker plate bolts.

Paul also fitted the chrome trim to the roof edge and aligned and pre-drilled the rear window hinges. He then went on to fit and align the front side panels before fitting the rear side window hinges. He also started fitting the aluminium ground panels.

Inspection And Repairs

As our 1990 Jaguar XJ6 will eventually be won through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions, Jonn has been investigating and assessing the car as well as making some repairs. Here are his notes:

Start inspection. Check all lights and levels and top up where required. Raise in the air and complete inspection and start repairs.. Remove wheels and clean and inspect brakes. Wire brush rear subframe mounts and underseal black. Refit wheels. Refit engine wiring loom to bracket. Grease drive shaft joints. Strip centre console to refit lid trim. Find support bracket that had dropped underneath armrest. Start reassembly.

Continue reassembly of centre console and armrest. Screw under trim in place and fit support bracket and test. Fit new trim clips to lower dash panel beneath glovebox and secure. Lubricate and g3t electric aerial working better. Wire brush and paint lower radiator support where had gone rusty.

Steering And Suspension

Steve has been preparing our 1988 Mercedes SL300 to be won through Bridge Classic Cars Competitions.

He replaced the steering idler arm bolt and bush as well as the near-side front bottom ball joint.

Bonnet Straps And Badges

Technician Jonn has continued work on the Grantz sensor on our 2022 Bridge C-Type Replica. He also secured the bracket under the prop shaft.

He went on to remove and turn the bonnet release handles 180ยฐ before fitting and securing the leather bonnet straps.

The headlights were rewired as the fog light was not turning off. Once this was resolved, Jonn drilled and fitted the badges to the bonnet and rear panel.

A Rusty Boot

Mauro has been working on the rust on the boot area of our 1960 MGA. He also removed wax from the front inner wings.

Jaguar Rear Axle

Jonn has been continuing with his work on the rear axle of our 1991 Jaguar XJS Le Mans. He mounted the easy bleed pipes and cleaned the frame ready to install. The ABS wires were fed into the car before Jonn mounted the rear diff sensor and secured it.

The rear axle mount was secured and the pipes were connected before the rear brakes were bled. The wheels were then refitted.

Jonn then refitted the exhaust pipes. The rear boxes were mounted and the pies fed through the subframe before all joints were secured from back to front.

The easy bleed pipes were remounted away from the exhaust, the ABS wires were reconnected under the rear seat and the rear seat was refitted.

Finally, the handbrake was adjusted and the carpet was refitted.

Our E-Type Delivered

On Monday, Tony, Molly, and Nick delivered our 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 Roadster to lucky winner Darcy.

This is a beautiful classic and we all hope that Darcy enjoys it as much as we have.

Another Competition Car Delivered

Earlier this week, we delivered our 2007 BMW 335i to lucky winner, Stephen.

After loading up the car into our covered trailer, Tony made the trip to Stephens’s home and delivered the car straight onto his driveway!

Everyone here at Bridge Classic Cars would like to congratulate Stephen again and we hope he enjoys his new car.

We have won Classic Car Restoration Specialists of the Year in the Corporate Live Wire Innovation & Excellence Awards 2024.

During the awards process, over 90,000 businesses and corporate professionals, magazine contributors and subscribers were asked to nominate companies & individuals based on factors such as service, innovation, experience, sustainability and other key criteria. Additionally, the judge’s research team put forward a selection of firms which they felt were deserving of recognition.

At the end of the process, we came out as the winners!

WIN Our 1988 Mercedes 300SL

Our 1988 Mercedes 300SL is now live on the Bridge Classic Cars Competitions website.

Our Mercedes-Benz 300SL was originally delivered by Mercedes-Benz main dealer Callanders of Glasgow to Cheshire Products Ltd on March 18, 1988. Initially serving as a directorโ€™s vehicle for six years before moving on to its second owner on March 25, 1994. After looking after the car for 24 years, it was eventually passed on to the third owner on May 25, 2018. Following a brief ownership, our 300SL found its way to its most recent owner on April 18, 2020.

From Storage To The Workshop

Our 1989 Daimler Double Six has been transported from our secure storage facility to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

Pre-Launch Repairs

Steve has been making some final repairs to our 1988 Mercedes 300SL in preparation for it to go live on Bridge Classic Cars Competitions.

He has replaced the washer pump rubber seal, replaced the driver’s side interior light, and fitted a new auxiliary drive belt.

Cobra Chassis

Classic car technician Julian has been building the chassis of our 1975 AC Cobra Replica. The front suspension has been painted and serviced and just the front coilovers and anti-roll bar are left to fit.

The differential is in place and the lower brackets have been fitted.

Mauro has also applied Raptor to the wheel arches.

912 Transport

Our 1965 Porsche 912 has been transported and delivered back home.

Another Pick-Up

While out on the road, Tony picked up the differential for our 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 Drophead Coupe.

Now that it is back in the Bridge Classic Cars workshop, work can continue on this rare classic Aston.

Collecting A Spitfire

Tony recently made the drive to Clacton to pick up a 1974 Triumph Spitfire. After loading it into the trailer, he delivered it safely to the Bridge Classic Cars workshop.

Now that it is here, work can begin on bringing this classic Spitfire back to life.

Eleanor Velasco Thornton – Spirit Of Ecstasy

Eleanor Velasco Thornton was born on 15 April 1880 in Stockwell, south-west London. Little is known of her early life, although it is known that as the 20th Century began, she was working as the assistant to the General Secretary of the Automobile Club of Great Britain & Ireland (later the RAC) Claude Johnson. Claude would go on to be the business partner of The Hon Charles Stewart Rolls.

Eleanor rented rooms at The Pheasantry on Kings Road, Chelsea. At that time, it was home to many artists (in the 1930s, the cellar became a restaurant and drinking club, the regulars of which included the painters Augustus John and Francis Bacon, the poet Dylan Thomas and legendary actor Humphrey Bogart; it remains a nightclub to this day). Eleanor lived something of a double life: by day, a professional executive assistant; by night, a life model for the Pheasantry’s resident artists. One of those for whom she regularly posed was a talented illustrator, Charles Sykes.

Eleanor’s life changed completely in 1902. That year, almost 100 miles from London, on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, was grappling with a longstanding problem. He was yet to take his future title of 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu and, surprisingly, he ran into money problems. By a double misfortune, his life’s great passion was the motor car, which in those days was still very much reserved for the wealthy.

Fortunately, Montagu was a very good journalist, so he set up Britain’s first dedicated motoring magazine,ย The Car Illustrated. Montagu could handle the writing, editing and publishing himself; but for images, he needed a professional illustrator. In one of those odd coincidences that so often shape history, the man he hired was Charles Sykes.

Among Montagu’s circle of motoring friends was Claude Johnson. When, through him, Montagu met Eleanor, he was instantly captivated by her intelligence and promptly poached her, offering her the position of Office Manager at his magazine. Eleanor accepted and ended up in a relationship with him, despite their 14-year age gap.

During this period (the precise date is unknown) Sykes produced a mascot for Montagu’s Rollsโ€‘Royce Silver Ghost. Called โ€˜The Whisperโ€™, it was a small aluminium statuette of a young woman in fluttering robes with a forefinger to her lips. It has been confirmed that Eleanor was the model: whether the mascot was a token of appreciation from Sykes to his friend and employer, or made on Eleanor’s request as a gift remains a mystery. Whatever the truth, Montagu displayed it on every Rolls-Royce car he owned until his death in 1929; perhaps as a discreet acknowledgement of his love for Eleanor, which he kept secret for so long.

Tragically, Eleanor was among hundreds who drowned when the P&O passenger shipย SS Persiaย sankย in the Mediterranean in 1915. Montagu was among the handful of survivors: he spent three days adrift on an upturned lifeboat, having suffered a fractured shoulder. He was also devasted and he never fully got over the emotion of the loss of Eleanor โ€“ of which, he could never speak publicly.

For the rest of his life, she was with him in spirit wherever he travelled in his Rolls-Royce motor car.

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Communications and Heritage, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said โ€œEleanor Thornton has a unique place in Rolls-Royce history. She is best known as the purported model for our Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, but how this came about is part of a far more complex and fascinating story. Secrets, sacrifices and the ever-present risk of scandal dominated her tragically short but intense and colourful life. She was a strong, intelligent, selfโ€‘assured and highly influential woman in an automotive world that was then almost entirely male-dominated. She also played a pivotal part in a timeless, tangled, deeply human drama that would eventually make her, and the artwork she inspired, immortal.”

MG Owners Club Takeover

On Thursday 11th April it was a beautiful evening for the MG Owners Club to takeover our Atelier for their own exclusive event. The warm weather and late sunset marked the start of summer feelings and a fleet of classic MGs arrived early evening.

Some of the guests in attendance were familiar faces however there were lots of new people experiencing Bridge Classic Cars for the first time. Rio expertly parked them outside and managed to capture some brilliant footage of all the cars which can be seen on our YouTube channel and Lily was behind the bar and responsible for the workshop tour. There were lots of current projects visible for the MGOC to see and learn about.

The current bar was a temporary fix ahead of our relocation to our exciting new events premises next door, all of the guests on the evening have promised to return once we are up and running. All in all it was a great evening.

Spitfire Wheel Caps

The wheel caps of our 1976 Triumph Spitfire have been prepped ready to be painted very soon.

TR7 Service

Technician Juliam has been servicing our 1981 Triumph TR7. He changed the oil and filter, checked all levels, replaced the nearside front wheel bearing, removed the brake pads to clean and grease them, and resealed the top radiator hose.

Transit Door Steps

Steve has fitted the newly painted doorstep trims and step rubbers on our Ford Transit Tipper MKII. He also fitted the chassis plates.

Refreshed Seats

Lydia has replaced the old worn-out covers on the back seats of our 1985 Citroen CX25 GTi. She used new fabric so that it matched the front seats.

XK120 Engine And Gearbox

The engine and gearbox have been put back onto the chassis of our 1954 Jaguar XK120.

After being lifted into position, Jonn secured the mounts and everything in place. The wheels were then put back on so the stands could be removed.
