Stripped and off to paint

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We expected the paintwork to be in slightly better condition that what we discovered so in true Bridge Classic Cars style…we’ll do it the way it should be done.

Today, Asa and John spent the day stripping the 1951 MGTD of it’s chromework and adjusted the position of the engine to ensure that the paintwork can be carried out to the condition that a car of this calibre should be.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4573,4574,4575,4576,4577″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]At Bridge Classic Cars, we find it very useful to take a lot of picture when working on a vehicle. Not only does this create a fantastic story for future owners so they can see exactly what work as been carried out and to what standard (exceptional I must add!). It also helps piece a car back together. It’s is easy to think you’ll remember where everything went but when you’ve slept on it for a few nights you may find yourself questioning a few things.

Keep a good record![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4578,4579,4580,4581,4582,4583,4584,4585″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

1951 MGTD arrived in Suffolk

It’s been a long time coming, with a long trip from Canada but our 1951 MGTD has finally arrived with us here at Bridge Classic Cars.

MGTD at Felixstowe Docks

Here we are collecting her from Felixstowe docks. It was a beautiful sunny day and a lovely trip back from Felixstowe. As I sure you can imagine, we got a lot of admirers along the way.

Quality control mixed with the odd slip of a screwdriver…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Towards the end of a restoration is the best time to have that final look over the paintwork, really look into the detail of the finish to make sure that everything is exactly how you want it to be.

As I am sure you already know, different lighting shows cars off in a different way. One minute the car looks completely spotless and perfect but then you take it into the daylight and you start to see the imperfections or slight blemishes.

Now is our time to do this and let’s also be frank…we’ve just spent the last week bolting bits back on so however hard we try, sometimes a screwdriver slips or a door isn’t perfectly straight on your first attempt. The point I am getting at is imperfections and slips happen, we try our best to avoid them but it happens.

So today, our 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 returns to the paintshop and with all of the imperfections masked up ready we set off for the final touching up.

Lights, Camera, Action at Empire Cinemas in Ipswich

Exciting news from The Empire Cinemas Official website

Ipswich, June 2016: This Winter, Empire Cinemas, the UK’s largest independently-owned cinema chain, will be rolling out the red carpet in Ipswich as part of a £35m redevelopment complex.

A state-of-the-art, twelve-screen Empire Cinemas complex will bring a new era of entertainment to the redeveloped Buttermarket Shopping Centre in Ipswich. The new opening is part of a larger retail and leisure development from Capital & Regional and Drum Property Group.

Representatives from Capital & Regional, Drum Property Group and Empire Cinemas gathered this week as they ‘handed over’ the cinema to Empire’s Chief Executive, Justin Ribbons. Empire Cinemas will now fit out the multi-screen cinema and create 45 new positions as excitement starts to build ahead of the grand opening this Winter.

The cinema will include two IMPACT screens. IMPACT boasts a bigger screen, bigger sound and altogether bigger experience; with superb stadium seating and extra leg room, IMPACT is the ultimate way to enjoy blockbuster movies.

Appointed as General Manager is Adam Root, who comes to Ipswich from the Walthamstow branch. With over 18 years’ leisure industry experience, Adam’s cinema career started at the Empire Cinema in Basildon in 2009 where he joined the busy eighteen screen cinema as an Assistant General Manager. He moved to Empire Bishop’s Stortford as General Manager in 2010 where he focused on enhancing the customer experience at the six screen Hertfordshire Cinema. However Adam is delighted to come to Ipswich given his local links with the area: “I am really excited to take on the stewardship of the brand new state-of-the-art Empire cinema in Ipswich. I lived in Ipswich for a couple of years as a child and still have family there so it will be great to be working in a town that I already hold great affection for. We have some fantastic plans for the new cinema and I can’t wait to get started with them”

The cinema will be surrounded by nine new well-known food and drink operators including Byron Burger, Wagamama, Coast to Coast and Prezzo. Stores include New Look with a new flagship 14,000 sq ft unit and TK Maxx relocating to a more prominent ground floor unit at the centre. Women’s fashion retailer Select have also opened at the centre, alongside Boots and health food brands Grape Tree and Holland & Barrett. Further cinematic developments about the site are set to follow.

Justin Ribbons, Chief Executive of Empire Cinemas commented:
“We are delighted to be opening the newest addition to the Empire family in Ipswich and look forward to entertaining film fans from across the area for many years to come.”

Empire Cinemas’ cater for all; from Empire JNRS, which offers families the chance to see a family favourite every weekend for pocket money prices; to Empire Seniors, where the over 60’s can watch a selection of the best recent and classic films every Wednesday, including tea or coffee and a biscuit. Empire Cinemas also welcome parents with babies through their Empire Parent & Baby screenings, providing a relaxing environment for parents/guardians to enjoy the latest releases with the lights up and sound down, every Monday morning. Other offers include SAV£RDAY Tuesday, which offers customers a chance to see current films for a ‘credit crunch busting’ price, and Last Chance To See Thursdays, which screens selected films coming to the end of their run at Saverday prices.

In addition to the very latest film releases, there will also be a variety of Empire Extra screenings, where customers can experience big stage productions and events on the big screen from the comfort of their local cinema – be it theatre, opera, ballet, music or sport, customers can sit back and enjoy the big screen experience in high definition where you’re always guaranteed the best seat in the house at a fraction of the theatre ticket price.

For more information on this exciting development please check out the Empire Cinemas Ipswich Facebook page:

Refitting the interior

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The major task of refitting the interior is upon us.

With all of the new components set out in the assembly workshop it was just a matter of piecing together what parts go where before Asa and John got stuck in with the re-trim.

It’s always a huge task on any restoration but one that is so rewarding, you can be working hard for days on the exterior of the car, stand back and not really notice a progress with your efforts but once the interior starts to take shape it’s a whole different story.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4548,4547,4546,4545,4544,4543,4542,4541,4540,4539″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The oversized number plate arrives

It’s all about the finishing touches…so when our original number plates arrived from Sheldrake and Wells in Ipswich, before we committed to fitting them onto the vehicle we offered them up to the bodywork to see how they looked.

The front stickers looks fantastic but the rear just didn’t look right so it was back time to come up with a plan be.

We remembered from our previous experience with the Jensen 541S restoration that oversized number were available on the market so we looked into what size these were produced in.

Luckily the oversized number plates that are produced for the classic vehicles are 520mm x 150mm which was the perfect size for what we required so we decided to get them re-produced.

New Look to the Building Exterior

Work is well underway on the new office and reception at Bridge Classic Cars and today we started the improvements on the exterior of the building too.

Thanks to the guys at GB Roadart on Farthing Road in Ipswich, after a brief consultation with Paul we were happy with the prices they gave and little under a week later the lads arrived to lay our new yellow lining.

Hidden classic car collection

Today, Bridge Classic Cars were personally invited to view a very unique and special collection of classic cars.

It was a lovely sunny morning, we were surrounded by beautiful green fields and picturesque views for miles. The gates we were looking for were tucked away, almost hidden amongst the trees. As we entered the gardens, incredibly, it was like time had stood still. Wherever you looked you were welcomed by the site of another classic motor vehicle. It was like the scene from a movie or one of those many programmes you see on the TV!

Each and every vehicle in this unique collection has been used and enjoyed by the current owners and we were lucky enough to view the huge collection of photographs and listen to the great stories relating to them all.

Unfortunately, as happens all too often, the years have passed by and now the collection is not enjoying the roads of today!

Almost all of the cars in the collection have been dry stored for many years, apart from the few that you can see that have been covered over.

Every vehicle we have seen today is now up for sale but the current owners have made it clear, they would love the collection to go to be enjoyed and not just taken away to be left to deteriorate further. The collection does not need to be sold, however, to the right buyers that are willing to bring them back to life, they have now made the decision that they can go.

Amongst the collection is:

  • 1923 Studebaker Light 6 EL Phaeton
  • 1925 Peugeot Bebe Commercial
  • 1937 Chrysler Wimbledon
  • 1937 Studebaker President
  • 1947-1958 AC Sports Saloon 4 Door
  • 1947-1958 AC Sports Saloon 2 Door
  • 1970 Dodge Polera Convertible 383 V8 (1 of 800 built)
  • 1977 Ford Ltd 4 Door 351 Cleveland V8
  • 1979 MG Midget 1500 with Hard Top
  • 1955 Ford Consul, with 45000 miles

Ready for preparation and paint

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With our 1966 Jaguar E-Type away for 24 hours to have the ceiling cloth and glass re-fitted it gave the team a small window to crack on with the next restoration.

The 1971 Jaguar E-Type convertible is well on it’s way to being stripped but with the paint shop ready and waiting we just needed to remove the final few pieces and get her ready for her full respray.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4485,4486,4487,4488,4489,4490,4491,4492,4493,4494,4495,4496,4497,4498″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Once the entire body has been stripped and everything that needs to be removed has been you are left with a very naked shell.

Here we are loading it up ready to take it to Trevor at Needham Market ready for it’s full respray.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4499,4500,4501,4502,4503,4504,4505,4506,4507,4508,4509,4510,4511,4512,4513,4514,4515,4516,4517,4518,4519″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Ceiling cloth and glass fitted

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Now back from Car Glass and Trim, the ceiling cloth and glass are almost complete. We were hoping to have it turned round within the 24 hour window we had but unfortunately not everything can go according to plan.

Only a few alterations that need to be made so all should be complete within the next few days.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4482,4480,4479,4478,4477,4476,4475,4474″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Whilst Asa and John were working on the ceiling and glass Gordon was able to cover the boot area with sound deadening pads.

We do like to use sound deadening pads on our restorations where possible as helps to create a nicer sound and feeling when you drive the car. It’s not a huge job to do but one well worth doing.

Bridge Classic Cars At Kersey Mill

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With both our 1990 Jaguar XJS and 1999 Jaguar XJR Supercharged now prepared and ready for this week’s classic car auction in Kings Lynn, as with all of our classic cars, it was time for the final photoshoot.

Jason - Sugar and Spice Photography - 1990 Jaguar XJS

The setting we chose was the stunning grounds of Kersey Mill, just outside Hadleigh in Suffolk.

We’ve known Alison and Steve at Kersey Mill for many years and we are so grateful that they allowed us around the grounds for the morning.

Jason - Sugar and Spice Photography - 1999 Jaguar XJR Supercharged

As always, Jason at Sugar and Spice Photography does a superb job for us. The great thing about Jason is he’s a true professional, he’s a master at what he does which means I can sit back (apart from when I’m taking pictures of him sitting back) and let him get on with the job in hand.

It was also lovely to see a Riley RME 1500 parked up at Kersey Mill, was shame the owner was not nearby otherwise they too could have joined in the shoot.

Getting ready for paint

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With our 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 safely out of the workshop and up the road with Car Glass and Trim in Ipswich, it gave John the afternoon to get on with stripping the 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 Convertible, ready for paint.

And has it was such a lovely day today, we set the car up outside so John could top up his tan at the same time!!

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4369,4370,4371,4372,4373″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Fitting the Ceiling Cloth and Glass

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today was a deadline that we couldn’t afford to miss!

We had our time slot booked in with Car Glass and Trim in Ipswich to have the new ceiling cloth and glass fitted. With only a matter of days to go until our 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 appears in the classic car auction held on Saturday 18th June at Anglia Car Auctions, it is vital, now more than ever, for us to meet all deadlines set out.

Full restorations, at the best of times, can be challenging and pressured but when you add strict time scales to the mix it makes our jobs that bit harder…but hopefully that bit more rewarding if and when its complete.

We uncovered a slight problem first thing this morning when we noticed a small water leak from behind the dash. Normally this would be something we could work on when she returns from the glass fitting but when the leak could be from behind the dash this is not a risk we were willing to take.

None the less, the fault was found and resolved and we could once again set off up the road to see Kevin and the guys at Car Glass and Trim.

Final week, final big push…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Although our schedule is tight our attention to detail will never suffer, it just means we may have some busier and longer days ahead but that’s what makes the team at Bridge Classic Cars so great!

It’s the beginning of our final full week and still lots to do in our Ipswich workshop.

If all goes well we have a daily and hourly schedule to adhere to but it’s not always as simple as we hope.

Today was the start of the chrome re-fit. It’s at this time of the restoration where we start to see the finished product taking shape.

A day out in Felixstowe

On such a glorious summers day and being so close to the beach we would’ve been mad not to take a trip out to Felixstowe to enjoy the sunshine today.

We parked up and took a little walk along the front heading to The Fludyers Hotel for a coffee and we bumped into this beauty!

A real head turner, I’m sure it has it’s mixed opinions but we love it!!

Back Axle Refurb

It’s all go in the workshop this week as the pressure is on for Asa and John to finish the 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 restoration, ready for the auction the week after next.

And quite often the case with restoration projects, just as you think things are on track you meet an unwelcomed problem.

Today, we discovered that the back axle was not in full working order and that can only mean one thing, remove the entire back section, diagnose the cause of the problem and find a solution.

1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Rear Axle Refurb

Whilst the back axle was off the vehicle we felt it was only right to dismantle the individual components and give it a full refurb, including new springs, shocks as well as freshly painting the casing and exposed areas.

Fitting the E-Type with sound deadener

FatMat Sound Control has been manufacturing Sound Dampening products for years now.

Sound Deadener plays a vital role and is one of the most crucial enhancements you can make to your vehicle! FatMat extreme will Stop Nasty Rattles, Vibrations, Road Noise.

Jaguar E-Type FatMat Fitting

Nothing even compares to the value and quality that you will get with FatMat Sound Dampening products. The key ingredients to any vehicle are the way they perform, the way they drive, the way they look and of course the way they sound.

Automobile manufactures for years now have left one of these elements out. And that’s Sound deadener! Although they usually do add some sort of sound dampening protection it does not and cannot meet the needs and demands of today’s industry.

FatMat

FatMatStandard vehicles for most of us just is not an option, we want power, we want looks, we want it to rumble and we want it to sound good! The side effect of all these upgrades are that you will add a great deal of heat, inside and outside noise, vibration and rattles.

Fatmat & Rattle Trap products will eliminate all of these effects and make your ride sound and feel like a million quid!!

The power of media…reuniting the Jensen 541S with it’s previous owners

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Last month we told you how delighted we were to feature in the May 2016 edition of the EADT’s Suffolk Magazine with a fantastic piece on our very own Jensen 541S restoration.

Suffolk Magazine May 2016

On Wednesday 25th May we received a lovely email into the office from a Mr and Mrs Smith:

“I was thrilled to see the car I owned for 31 years restored to pristine glory in the Suffolk magazine, I have several photo’s of the car under restoration, I and a colleague made the tubes and did the welding on the chassis but sadly time over took me you see I am in my 77th year. The Jensen originally came from Ipswich a publican owned it and used it to go onto the beach at Felixstowe I bought it from a man in Hadliegh and drove it home about 2-00am with a very noisy exhaust what a thrill. I still have several cars we currently use for local trips an Austin A40 Somerset & a Ford Consul Mk1 also a number of others from 1923 to 1979 I do have some photo’s of the 541s and we do live in Suffolk on the Norfolk border I and my wife would love to come and see your workshop. Regards William Smith”

On Saturday 28th May, we welcomed Doreen and William Smith to the Bridge Classic Cars workshops to have a chat and show us some images that they had from when they owned the 1961 Jensen 541S. They loved the canvas print that we had on display in the workshop and we showed them the full gallery of the restoration project and the fantastic photoshoot from Sugar and Spice Photography, held at Seckford Hall in Woodbridge, Suffolk

Bridge Classic Cars welcomes John to the team

This week we welcomed a new member to the Bridge Classic Cars team.

John, a motor vehicle technician with over 28 years experience within a local franchised dealer.

He’s joined the Bridge Classic Cars team at one of our busiest times so we are thrilled to have him on board and we look forward to seeing his area’s of expertise put to the test: servicing, repairs and diagnostic faults. John is qualified in MOT testing, he’s also a qualified air conditioning and diagnostic technician, he’s an ATA accredited technician and a qualified First Aider.

As a keen classic car enthusiast himself, John owns a Ford Escort RS2000, MkI.

Europcar at Aberdeen Airport

As a regular traveller to Aberdeen and with a 4am start it is always good that when you go to collect your hire car that there is one there as Europcar is in great demand.

Ted and his team always try and go the extra mile in getting me a diesel car with Bluetooth as the roads from Aberdeen to Elgin are not the best.

Europcar Team Aberdeen Airport

Ted and his team at Europcar, Aberdeen Airport.

You are always greeted with courtesy and a smile from Tammy (Second Left) but that is not to say that the others are not just as courteous.

As a VIP status customer with Europcar they always try and upgrade me where they can into the next range of vehicle.

On Tuesday 24th May 2016 I arrived as normal and Ted asked if a Focus would be ok for this week to which I agreed.Whilst filling in the paperwork he asked if I was travelling alone. When I said ‘yes’ he smiled and handed me the keys to:

2016 Mercedes SLK Black

2016 Mercedes SLK 250D

On arriving at the Mansion House Hotel and Country Club in Elgin I was greeted and signed in by Becky who, straight away, saw the car and insisted on a sit-in.

When you return to Aberdeen Airport with your car it has to be inspected for damage. Again you are welcomed into the office whilst one of Ted’s team checks the car and signs it off. (Whilst left alone this gives you the opportunity to fill your pockets with the free sweets!)

Thanks Ted and the team, see you Tuesday! (I am rather partial to Range Rover Sports)

She’s stripped and ready to go…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Time management can be a full time job in itself when you’re restoring a classic vehicle.

You always have to be one or two steps ahead of yourself as tasks take time and time is a costly element to restorations.

We’ve all been there when you go to fit a crucial part onto the care only to realise that you forgot to order a seal for it..and then you’re told it will take 10 days to come it means you are then 10 days behind! Nightmare!

A schedule and timeline is very important when restoring as it ensures that all of the tasks that need to be carried out can be started and finished at the right time for the next one to start and finish. One slip up can cost a lot of time.

This week at Bridge Classic Cars has been a very important week for planning as we have some very strict time restrictions that we need to adhere to. With our 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 due to return from the paint shop any day now not only did we need to plan for the next stages of this restoration, we needed to start to plan for our next one as well as clearing some space in the workshop for her return.

Last week you may have seen we collected our 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 Convertible from the ship at Felixstowe docks. With only a few days spare before we see the return of our 1966 Jag we needed to start working on removing the engine and stripping the car of it’s components ready for phase 2.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4244,4243,4242,4241,4240,4239,4238,4237,4236,4235,4234,4233,4232,4231,4230,4229,4228″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A special thank you to Tony at Wyatt Polishing in Thetford

When your back is against the wall and deadlines are looming your suppliers are as important as your technicians.

Tony Burgess at Wyatt Polishing in Thetford is one of our suppliers.

Tony’s company are expert metal polishers and a Chroming centre.

A keen classic car enthusiast himself he always goes the extra mile but in this instance he has gone further than that.

Bought as a part restoration and only arriving at our workshops 2 weeks ago Tony took the chrome and returned it to us in 2 weeks.

The quality of Wyatts Polishing work is superb and we want to thank Tony and his team for all his efforts and the service he gives us.

Arriving at the docks…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For some time now we’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of our latest restoration project, a 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 Convertible.

After a long trip over from the states it was great to finally hear the news that she had arrived safely into Felixstowe docks.

So at 8am this morning we set off up the A14 to the docks at Felixstowe to collect her.

It’s situations like these that have make you realise just how lucky we are to have one of the largest container ports in the UK right here on our doorstep. In a way, I think we take it for granted just how close we are to Felixstowe.

So we arrived at the warehouse and sat ourselves amongst the large queue of HGV’s, all waiting to collect their loads ready for the day ahead.

We were eventually advised to drive round the back of the warehouse and await further instruction from the guys there…so we set off.

I half expected to go round the last bend of the warehouse and see our Jaguar E-Type hidden between a huge stack of empty pallets but no, far from it intact…

…turns out Bridge Classic Cars wasn’t the only company awaiting the arrival of their imported classic car today.

Check out this stunning Ford Mustang GT just hanging around.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4154,4156,4158,4159,4161,4162,4163,4164,4165,4166,4167,4168″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]And there she was, appearing from no where…admittedly not in the most elegant of ways…our 1971 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 Convertible.

Now the fun starts![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”4169,4170,4171,4172,4173,4174,4175,4176,4177,4178,4179,4180,4181,4182,4183,4184″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Well on the way to a new paint finish

Although the car was 80% restored and freshly painted we were never going to happy with the paint finish. It would of been easy to bolt on the missing parts and sell as is, but Bridge Classic Cars name would be on it. We discussed at some length and the decision was to repaint. Stripped and sent to our paint shop it is now blocked and nearly ready for paint.
