Carl Offord, Lightning Rods – January 2020

Congratulations to Carl Offord, who finished 2nd place at the Best in Britain Lighting Rod championships. The Lightning Rod championships were held at the Yarmouth stadium on the 29th December. Three races were run on the day.

In race number one Carl started 6th from the back in a field of roughly 25 cars. Carl fought his way through the grid and crossed the line in third after a fantastic wheel-to-wheel race. Unfortunately Carl was docked two places due to a racing incident which saw him finish in 5th.

Race two began with a reverse grid with Carl heading out 6th from the front. Carl drove a fantastic clean race and built up a comfortable lead to take the win in the second race of the day.

Finally, the third race of the day was up. Carl qualified on pole position and drove a perfect race for the first 20 of the 25 lap race. On the 20th lap Carl approached a back marker to overtake. The back marker lost control and spun, collecting Carl up with him. Having made his way back onto the racing line, Carl had lost not only a lot of time, but also the lead and slipped down into 2nd place. He fought valiantly to try and regain first place but in the end finished in 2nd place.

Having lead so many laps it was hard not to feel disappointed not to come away with the win, however, second place is still a great achievement. Congrats, Carl.

Here is a little bit of information about the Stuedebaker;

Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 withย electric vehiclesย and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name “Studebaker Automobile Company”. Until 1911, its automotive division operated in partnership with theย Garford Companyย ofย Elyria, Ohio, and after 1909 with theย E-M-F Company. The first gasoline automobiles to be fully manufactured by Studebaker were marketed in August 1912.ย Over the next 50 years, the company established a reputation for good quality and reliability.

1960 MG A Chassis in the Paint Shop

Chris has made wonderful progress working on the chassis of our 1960 MG A restoration. He’s braced the chassis to add structural rigidity and stop twisting. Then he’s tackled the surface rust, grinding down the effected area before applying rust treatment.

Areas that were too badly rust effected have been cut out and and had fresh metal welded in place.

Great job Chris! With Paul working on the chassis in the workshop and Chris working on the shell int he paint shop, this restoration is really starting to build up a head of steam.

1944 Morris C8 Engine Rebuild completion

Our lovely 1944 Morris C8, or to call her by her real name, Ellen, is now complete.

We were tasked with rebuilding the engine on this Morris C8. Most of the work was carried out by Ady, Bridge Classic Cars’ engine specialist.

Firstly, we removed the engine for full assessment. Ady and Pete had found that the big end bearings had deteriorated. The engine was stripped down and cleaned. Under instruction of the customer we stripped down the engine and inspected all components. We found the piston rings were broken and the crankshaft needed grinding. The valve seats had deteriorated so we laped in all the valves.

We fitted new piston rings, new bearings and the head gasket were custom made for this engine. All other gaskets were all hand made for this C8 engine.

All the remianing parts were refurbished or replaced for new, before the engine was re-assembled and taken out for testing. Ellen now runs smoothly and is ready for many more years on the road.

1960 MG A restoration continues

Paul has been making good progress on our MGA chassis. He has repaired the front chassis section ready to be sent down to our paint shop. He has also templated up the old wood in preparation for brand new wooden panels to be fitted. We’ve found corrosion on the rear section of the drive shaft tunnel so this will either need restoring or replacing.

Morris C8 Engine goes in

After many hours work from Bridge Classic Cars’ engine specialist, Ady. It is now time for the engine to be dropped onto the chassis. Ady and Pete have positioned the rebuilt engine back into the 1944 Morris C8. Pete is now completing the reassembly before we fire her back into life.
