Cars That Drive Themselves Might Be Coming Soon

There are lots of companies that are trying to make self-driving cars something that we see on the roads every day.

Two of the recent companies to help make self-driving cars possible are Lucid Motors and Stellantis. Both of these are teaming up with a computer company called NVIDIA to make it happen in the next few years.

Lucid Wants You to Have a Self Driving Car

Lucid Motors is building cars that can do all the driving for you. Lucid is aiming for Level 4 autonomy, which means the car can handle everything on its own. You could nap, read a book, or even play a game while the car takes you wherever you need to go!

To do this, Lucid is using a powerful computer system from NVIDIA called DRIVE AGX Thor. This system will help future Lucid cars “see” the road using radar, cameras, and lidar.

Lucid first started with a system called DreamDrive Pro, which already lets some of their cars do hands-free driving. Now, they’re upgrading it so the car can drive with your “mind off” meaning you won’t even need to pay attention.

Stellantis Is Building Robotaxis

While Lucid is making cars for people to own, Stellantis wants to create robotaxis. These will be shared cars you can travel in without a driver! They’ve teamed up with NVIDIA too, plus other big names like Uber and Foxconn.

Their plan is to roll out 5,000 self-driving vehicles by 2028, starting in cities across America. These robotaxis will be built on Stellantis’s special car platforms and use NVIDIA’s self-driving software to safely drive people around.

Each partner has a job. Stellantis builds the cars, NVIDIA adds the AI, Foxconn provides the electronics, and Uber operates the robotaxi service.

Are We There Yet?

Not quite, but we’re getting closer. With big ideas and high-tech tools, Lucid and Stellantis are helping cars become more autonomous and, one day soon, we might be able to travel in cars that drive themselves.
